If you're having trouble finding finer paper than 1200, you can use brasso on the reverse side of the wet & dry. It's prob equivalent (at a guess) to 2000 or so. Then use a sheet of A4 paper if you're really keen. Then brasso and a cloth.

Sand/polish in a line, like sanding timber. Otherwise you'll stuff yourself over trying to get swirly scratches out.

Mark

PS Model car/model railway shops usually have very fine sandpaper avbl

If you want to have a go yourself with one of the $30 buffing wheel jobs, try starting with something simple like your radiator cap (if you haven't already bought a bling one). Just peel off the sticker and experiment with the different buffing compounds and wheels until you get the hang of it.

Sooner or later you'll end up with a cap that shines like it's been chromed, then you'll be lookin for the next thing to polish.

Oh, and the cheapy kits usually come with two different colour compound sticks - make sure you remember which is which (like write it down or keep the cardboard it came in).

If you don't have a bench mounted wheel, just stick the buff wheel in a drill, clamp it in a vice and lock the trigger on - much easier to hold the buffee than the buffer.

Good luck dudes.....

Here is a pic of what my plenum used to look like and a pic of what it looks like after ALOT of work..

You MUST sand it down first before using a bench grinder with poshing wheel and cutting compound or you will have ripples all through it..

If you want it smooth like a mirror you have to sand it down untill you have no dimples in it, thats alot of sanding, and hard especialy in the crevices and bends

PHWOAOARRR that's nice.. that's damn nice.

More info please I might have a go at something easy first like my intercooler pipes ;0

start sanding with a rough paper like an 80 just to get the dimples out quick, the hardest bit is to get the dimples out of the crevises, then work your way to finer and finer paper, when you have it looking like a mirror then you can use a bench grinder with a buff wheel with the grey cutting compound. There is no easy way to do it, its just ALOT of sanding. If you have the time just give it a go, just get in there with the paper, dont be afraid, you carnt stuff anything up. Use a rubber sanding block for all flat spots like the top.. Get some friends around and get everyone to have a sand because your hands gets sore and your arms get tired after a while .. Your can covers are very very easy to do because its smooth to start with ..

    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
    • Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!
    • Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.
    • Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
