I decided it would be a plenty easy job to replace the stuffed lifters in my old 308. I forgot to soak them in oil first, and second I read the book where it says to torque the bolts holding the rocker gear in a particular sequence which I ignored.

Started it back up and farted and ticked away like a bitch. Took all the bits off and did the torquing properly which only helped a little bit.

It took a month of driving it around before it regained its original power.

my mates RX7 had a hidden kill switch that we did not know about, the fog light button hadbeen changed over to kill the fuel pump when it was flicked.

Anyway, one day i was sitting in the car and got bored so i decided to start playing with stuff and i ended up flicking this switch and flicked it back again. After basically pulling everything apart we found the fuel pump was not working but notbeing able to find the problem we gave up and left the car there for the weekend.

Come monday we got the auto electriction in and after ****ing round with the car for a few hours we were going to wire the tail lights to the fuel pump so we could drive it to his workshop when i noticed that there was some white paint on the foglight switch. after pulling the switch out i found the kill switch leads and joined them together tocomplete the circut.

What had happened was that because the switch had not been used in so long the terminal had corroded so that even though the switch was in the "on" posotion there was no current flowing through.

All because i decided to play with the switch.

U snapped the aerial off another car because u were stupid enough to lock your keys in the car?!!??? ure a real tool buddy, i wouldnt admit to something like that if i did it thats for sure. Maybe that y ure girl dumped u :(

Had an oil leak a while back and didnt know where it was coming from, spent ages getting the whole car off the ground with bricks and wood and stuff so i could get under it started pulling stuff off left right and centre to get to gaskets and what not when i realised the sump plug wasnt done up from the recent oil change

Well the thread was about "the absolute dumbest thing you've ever done to / with / relating to your car?" right??? I'm not proud of what i did and wouldn't do it again, but come on now it was sitting there running in the streets of Parramatta!

By the way i got back together with the girl but then she got deported.

Well I had a severe knocking and vibration coming from the rear left of my car. After driving around for a few days it progressively got worse and worse.....spoke to a few people and thought that either CV or Diff was going. Organised a rental car so I could get to work while my car was being repaired and in the meantime called my uncle who is a mobile mechanic to take a quick look at it and help confirm the issue.

Anyway....he jacks up the rear left wheel off the ground and wiggles it.....FARKKEN wheel nuts were loose to the point where the wheel was knocking around against them.....uncle tightened all my wheelnuts for me and I stood there looking like an IDIOT......

Had to try and cancel the rental car which the girl was kind enough to let me do without losing my $100 deposit.

But i learnt something very important that day.

had a 95 model charade and one time in the afternoon after topping the radiator up with coolant, i closed the bonnet...but it wasnt shut.

mate called needed me over in a hurry, i jumped in took off no realising my bonnet wasnt closed properly and WAMM, at 60km/h the bonnet flung up and hit my windscreen and stayed there, i pulled over and started punched the dents out of the bonnet and then it wouldnt close proprly because the hinges were buckled.....

haha

A guy from my tafe went out to help a mobile mechanic one day to help with a service. It required an oil change and a change of spark plugs. The mechanic asked him to fill the oil back up in the car. "Hey this car only take 1 litre of oil" The mechanic turned around and he had filled one of the spark plug holes up completely up oil... Lol dumbass

when lowering my car did the wheels up kinda tightish whilst still in the air, lowered her back down and forgot to tighten then further, alas on the way to sydney the next day a severe rattling on the freeway at about 140, pulled into a servo cause i don't have a tyre brace, 3 nuts fell off as soon as i touched em, another 6 were so loose it wasn't funny, woulda been absolute disaster if a wheel had fallen off, haven't forgotten to tighten them ever again

That's right, whats the absolute dumbest thing you've ever done to / with / relating to your car??? I thought i'd start this thread and get everyone to share their efforts after quite possibly the biggest display of supidity, by me...ever, on Saturday, here goes..

My mate and I were installing his old Sony head unit in my R32. So we got all the tools out, unplugged the battery, took the dash surround off etc, put it all back together and then tested the deck - sweet, it worked, no worries.

Went to start the car to move it...it turned over but nothing, try again - same thing. I waited another minute, tried again but it still wouldn't fire. Checked the battery connections, tried again, nothing!!! I'm freakin out about now cos I got my car all tuned etc the previous day at UAS so all should be fine...i couldn't believe it, I had to call the NRMA cos I had no idea!!! I was told 90 mins...great, had to wait...thankfully they rocked up after only 10mins. I started telling the bloke what the problem was then he asked me if i had an immobiliser...FAAAAAAAARK!!!!  :bs!: So i hit the unlock button - "beep beep" it, turned the key..VAAROOM!!! MOTHERF**KER The poor NRMA dude didn't

even touch my car!!!

Now i'm never one to be too ashamed to call the NRMA but i think this one was bordering on the ridiculous!!!

Went and got rid my classic big block ford powered 68 ute and jumped into one of these SH%$box Skylines

in my commy after putting the new motor in i went to do up the bolts for the intake...

big mistake

i hadnt put the dizzy back in place and one of the rear bolts fell straight through the dizzy hole.

i ended up having to pull out the motor and drop the sump to get to the bolt! :)

Two for me.....At work....have the keys in my car out front. Didn't realise the boss had locked the front door while we were having a beer so that people wouldn't steal stuff from us. Boss had left before us (half hour or so). We locked all the roller doors down and padlocked them. When it came time to exit the building...oh no...door is locked....my keys are in my car which is no more than 2 meters from us. Had to ring all the surrounding businesses, on a saturday no less, to find out if anyone could get them out and unlock our front door to let us out. We could have been stuck there all weekend.

This one is for my brother.....

He's having probs with his alternator. I fix his probs but he still has a stuffed battery. He forgets to get a jump start from his g/f before she leaves in the morning in their good car. He proceeds to roll the car down his very steep hill to clutch start it. No go. The microtec doesn't even have enough voltage to power up. he gets to the bottom where his car is in the middle of the road. He decides that he can't leave it there so he gets out and starts to push it back up onto the footpath. Anway, car starts to pick up speed (slight downhill decline) forgets that he has left his drivers door open and it collects the street sign and rips it clean off it's hinges.

Hahah, great story you had me laughing out loud. Keep them comming...

Two for me as well.

17 years old and I know ZERO about cars. I see a TA22 celica for sale and knock on the guys door. Wants $400 but it has mags so I dont give a shit and think its the ants pants. He takes it for a spin with me ( with the stereo blasting so I cant hear all the noises ) and he does a burnout and I nearly wet my pants with excitement. Run home get money and come back and buy it off him.

Get it to a mechanic for a RWC inspection and when I come back the mechanics are pissing themselves laughing as I have purchased the biggest lemon they have ever seen, bog everywhere, engine is nearly dead etc etc. The repair list was into the thousands of dollars and they told me to take it to the tip. Discouraged, I took it home where it sat in the backyard for months untill my parents wanted me to move it. The battery was flat, so I grabbed the one of my parents car to start it when I put the terminals on backwards and fried everything. Ended up getting picked up by a wrecker for $50.

That was 10 years ago but more recently had the good old car fight with the missus, you know, when they jump out of the car and you follow them at 10km/hr with the hazards on saying "can you please just get back in the car". Anyways, the stalking aint working so I get out to follow on foot. The obligatory "ok ok Im sorry blah blah " goes on and we return to the car and you guessed it the keys are inside and doors are locked. 10.00pm and nobody is around. Call on a mate for a favour who is at his fathers 50th birthday and he does me good and drives out to me with some tools and stuff approx. 45 minutes away. He gets out and goes to his boot and grabs his tool box and walks over to my drivers side. Looks at me blankly, turns around, and bumps my door with his ass and the lock pops up. It hadnt shut properley.

being a newbie in my first line back in 2003, driving in the wet at about 2am in the morning, raced a clubsport and was cruising in front of him and thort id show off, like how ma friend did in his turbo tx3 fwd not 4wd, any ways so i shift from second to 3rd at about 80km/h pop the clutch hard and turned the steering wheel, BIG mistake drifted the ass out didnt know what to do and ended up spinning into a gutter and just missing a pole!!! had to spend 600$ on a new lower controll arm on the right rear, cracked my side skirt alil, buckled my wheel which i had to drive around on for a month or so after i fixed it, learnt a big lesson after dat day:)

    • I know this one’s the BB one. My tuner did make mention about the actuator. I am curious about the VCT as well
    • Might also needs a stronger actuator with the right preloading. With older 2019 built bush G3 units, BB upgrade or 21U housing down size makes a pretty decent gain in response as well.
    • Hey lads  so im finally putting together my rb30 forged bottom end and ran into an issue. I measured my main bearing clearance with arp main studs torqued to 60 ft-lbs using ACL H series STD size bearings and standard, un-ground crank shaft journals and got an oil clearance reading of about 1.3 thou measuring straight up and down and about 2.8 thou measuring at a 45 degree angle (just above and below the parting line). My machine shop said they measured the main tunnel and it was all within spec (they didnt say the actual measurement) and to go with a standard size bearing, which i have done and the clearance is too tight, I'm guessing because of the extra clamping force from the arp studs distorting the main tunnel. I was wanting to run about 2.5 thou main bearing clearance.  My questions are: 1. could i just use the HX extra 1 thou clearance ACL bearings? that would fix my straight up and down clearance making it about 2.3 thou, but then would the side to side clearance be too big at around 3.8 thou? 2. what actually is the recommended main bearing clearance for measuring near the parting line / side to side. i know its supposed to be bigger as the bearing has some eccentricity built into it but how much more clearance should there be compared to the straight up and down measurement? at the moment there is about 1.5thou difference, is that acceptable or should it be less? 3. If i took the engine block + girdle back to the machine shop and got them to line bore the main tunnel (like i told them to do the first time, but they said it didnt need it) what bearing size would i buy? the STD size bearing shells already slide in fairly easily with no real resistance, some even falling out if i tip the girdle up-side-down. If im taking material out of the main tunnel would i need a bearing with extra material on the back side to make up for it? this is probably confusing af to read so if something doesn't make sense let me know and ill try explaining in a different way. My machine shop doesn't come back from christmas break until mid January, hence why i'm asking these questions here. TIA for any help or info
    • I bought the model back in Japan in Feb. I realised I could never build it, looked around for people who could build it, turns out there's some very skilled people out there that will make copies of 1:1 cars or near enough. I'm not really a photo guy... but people were dragging me in a group chat for the choice of bumper as someone else saw the car before it was finished as they are also a customer of that shop. I took the photo in the above post because I was pretty confident that the lip would work wonders for it. Here's some more in-progress and almost-done pics. It gives a good enough idea as to what the rear looks like!   I have also booked in a track day at the end of January. Lets all hope that is nothing but pure fun and games. If it's not pure fun and games, well, I've already got half an engine spare in the cupboard
    • Well, do ya, punk? Seriously though, let's fu<king go! The colour and kit looks amazing on the car. Do you have any shots from the rear? I don't quite follow how the model came around. You bought the white kit and he modified it to match your car? Looks nuts either way!
