Not sure if any of you guys have looked into this yet but there is sort of an online racing option.

It's actually the LAN game settings, but if you hook your ps2 up to your pc and use a tunneling program, it tricks the ps2 into thinking that it's hooked directly into another ps2 and not thousands of miles away through the net.

The catch is the you would need an excellent internet connection. Here is the link for the tunneling software. clicky clicky

Let me know if any of you are interested, cause i'm picking up an extra network card in a day or two, and i'm gonna give this a go.

I'll post up how it goes, if connection is ok, etc....

If it's good, we can start a comp on Burg...hehehe

So, you've read all of the current documentation and just can't get it going, right? Can't get past the "Waiting for connection" screen? Read the notes surrounded by asterisks.

This guide is to help everyone out there get Gran Turismo 4 working Online, by using XLink Kai: Evolution 7 to trick Gran Turismo 4 into thinking the Internet is one big Local Area Network.

The requirements (for this guide) are as follows:

- A new slim PS2 or PS2 with Network Adaptor.

- A PC with Windows XP.

- A PCI Ethernet Network Interface Card not in use.

- An RJ-12 crossover cable.

- Gran Turismo 4.

- A broadband internet connection. 256/64 minimum (2 player only).

Bandwidth used is 5kB/s per player (not including yourself),

for both downstream and upstream.

Examples:

Bandwidth (2 Player): 5kB/s downstream, 5kB/s upstream.

Bandwidth (3 Player): 10kB/s downstream, 10kB/s upstream.

The bandwidth used does not change wether you are hosting or not.

All users must have a latency of under 60ms for acceptable gameplay.

Hook up the RJ-12 crossover cable from the PS2 into the spare Network Interface Card in your PC.

Go to Control Panel, and double-click on Network Connections. Right-click on the connection that is directly connected to the internet, and click on Properties. Click on the "Advanced" tab, and tick the option that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection". Then click on OK.

Go to www.teamxlink.co.uk and create an XLink tag (click on the Sign Up link at the top).

Download XLink Kai: Evolution 7 for Windows XP.

Install the program and open the configuration tool "Start Kai Config" in the Start menu. Under Profile, select "Normal Kai Use" and select your NIC (Network Interface Card). Enter in your XTag and Password and tick Auto Login and click OK.

Load up Gran Turismo 4, and get to the first screen where you can choose between Arcade Mode and Gran Turismo Mode.. Scroll down and select Options.

Under "Arcade Mode", select "LAN Play".

Set your "Machine name" to whatever you like.

Set "Host" to "Yes". (even if you are not hosting.. you will set it back to "No" afterwards)

Set No. of players to "2".

Set No. of monitors to "0".

Set Monitor type to "Normal".

Set Network Traffic to "Light."

If you will be Hosting, leave that option as Yes, if you will be Joining games, set Host to "No".

Save your settings.

Go into "Arcade Mode" and select "Multi LAN Race". If there is no Network Settings there, then do the following:

---

Select Create new network configuration

Default Hardware settings are fine.

Enter in the name of your ISP for "Name".

Authentication "No"

User ID blank

Password blank

Use DHCP "Yes"

Use auto DNS "Yes"

Click OK.

---

Start XLink Kai ("Start Kai" in the Start menu).

An MSN type Window will appear.

Back in GT4, select the network configuration you will use, and select "Connect". You should see "Waiting for connection"..

In Kai, click on the tiny icon of a Globe, at the top of the window, then click on the tiny icon of a magnifying glass at the top of the window.

Make sure you can see "Network Reachable: Yes", then click on the icon of a Folder at the top, and make sure it says "Sony Playstation 2 Configured successfully".

Back in GT4, press Square to exit the "Waiting for connection" screen..

Now this is where the annoying part starts.. Everything must be perfectly timed or you'll stay stuck at the "Waiting for connection" screen..

****WHAT THE OTHER GUIDES DO NOT TELL YOU****

The amount of players you are going to play with, must match the number of players you set in the "LAN Play" settings. See the Note under the "Joining a game" section.

You need to correctly set your Kai status when it asks for one.

*********************************** *********

In Kai, click on the Globe icon. Then on the green arrow for Playstation 2, green arrow again for GT4. Click on the green arrow that corresponds to the area of the world you live in.

Now, this must be set correctly. If you will be hosting a game (which is the preferred option), everytime the option to set your status in Kai comes up, select "Yes, i'm hosting now". If you are not going to host, then select "No, i'm trying to join". Then click on the green arrow to set that status.

If you look at the Kai window, there is a very long thin button in the middle of the right side of the window, click on that to expand it and reveal the chat window.

--- Joining a game ---

If you will be joining a game, wait until a new arena appears and immediately join it, and press "Connect" in GT4 to get to the "Waiting for connection" screen, the moderator of the arena "should" then ask if everyone is at the WFC (Waiting for connection) screen, and you and the other people in the arena should reply back

letting the moderator know you are ready, and then the moderator will start the game by clicking "Connect" on his side.

*** The big problem joining a game is that the "No. of players" setting that the Host (moderator of the arena) set in the "LAN Play" options, is not very likely to be the amount of people in the arena trying to join the game. This will cause the "Waiting for connection" screen to stay there forever unless the amount of players is at least the amount the Host set in his "LAN Play" options. This is why hosting a game with a friend is a much better option ***

---

--- Hosting a game ---

To host a game, click on the Icon of a Globe with a cable coming out of it. Give your arena a name, and set the number of players to the amount of Players you chose in the "LAN Play" options in GT4.

Wait for the correct amount of players to reach the "Waiting for connection" screen, and then click on "Connect" in GT4.

*** Note: The host (you) joins the game LAST after everyone else gets to the "Waiting for connection" screen. Also note if you have selected No. of players "6", then you must wait until 5 people are at their WFC screen before you try to start the game. ***

The notes surrounded by asterisks here should give people reasons why they cannot get past the WFC screen..

Note: If you still cannot get past the WFC screen.. Have the Host restart both his/her PS2 AND XLink: Kai Evolution 7. This has been proven to fix problems where you are stuck at the Waiting For Connection screen.

I hope this helps everyone out.. Thanks for taking the time to read it all :P

Thanks for Daizer for contributing on a mild level :)

[Edit: Bandwidth usage update.. and extra note on what to do if it still doesn't work]

...

If you have a router.. You should just be able to run a patch cable (aka straight-through cable) from the PS2 to the router/hub/switch and then proceed with the instructions from the download xlink stage ;)

Archie, with this software you dont need an extra netwok card if you have a router with a spare port or a switch hooked up to a router. There is a thread about it in the Whirlpool gaming lounge, can't give the link because its a protected forum.

I'm not using a router atmo, and since i have a spare network card i thought it might be the cheaper option, this way with a bit of tricky wiring and a network adaptor cable for the ps2 it should run well. but i did consider using a router at one stage.

Thanks for all that extra info, gonna go read through it now to see if maybe another option is better suited. I was just thinking $$$ atmo as i've spent a bucketload on GT4 with the steering wheel and all.

From a couple of threads around I gather that the lag is dependant on ping rather than then the number of players. The rule of thumb is that under 70ms is sufficient for up to 6 players, as long as all of them have enough bandwidth (5k per player).

Well a guy on another forum done a 6 person Lan and he said that anymore than 4 it would lag and that was on LAN.

Really?? I stand corrected then... We should have an SAU GT4 meet-up. Will need like a warehouse so you could fit all the tellies, ****pits, bean bags (adjustable racing seats) etc... That'd be cool.

hey so did any1 get this to work?

Nope, i ended up getting a router cause i've got two pc's networked now, so i tryed the easy way.... everything works fine accept for the software x-link, which dosn't want to recognise my ps2 for some reason. normal online gaming works fine on the playstation... so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong and well i got a bit disintrested as i've been busy... but maybe someday i'll get off my ass and try again.
