I'm not sure if I'm right here, but hear me out..

r33 gearboxes are tough as nails..

R32 GTR gearboxes are tough as nails.

R32 GTR gearboxes are INTERNALLY the same as an R33 GTST gearbox (except for the front shafts thing..)

SK has said this many times. all the GTR boxes and R33 gtst gearboxes he has opened up have been the same internally.

so with the front drive shafts taken out of a gtr gearbox and the sump welded up, it is basically a R33 gtst gearbox.

I have also heard many times that the R32 GTS4 (4wd) gearbox is IDENTICAL to the gtr item.

it is the same box.

and therefore, the drive shafts can be taken out, welded up and used for rear wheel drive, which is the same as a gtr box, which is the same as a R33 gtst box.

hmmm..

r33 gtst box = $2K+ if you can find one.

r32 gtr box = $1K+

R32 gts4 box = $500+

surely someone has stumbled across this already or at least thought about it.

or maybe I am wrong about the whole comparison...

The casings are clearly different, and while the internals may be as strong, or even an identical item, the housing is what allows the box to remain optimal regarding location and running surfaces. So the answer is that it's a matter of conjecture whether one is as strong as the other.

The GTR32 box could be put in without attaching the front prop shaft. Since the GTR feeds power to the front, and is nominally RWD it should be fine with little power loss due to the clutch unit hanging off the side. That said i don't know anyone who has done it.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I did use the search function :ermm: . Anyway I have a 32 gts4, running an rb25det. Now a few questions the general consensus is that gts4 boxes are almost the same as gtr boxes. Except gts4 boxes block is a bit different and a bit weaker? and the gearing is slightly different?

Now would there be an issue to worry about replacing the box with a gtr item? due to my running an rb25det? I assume I'm running a modded tailshaft due to this? ( pretty much a noob in that respect) but read that you need to do that when running a 25 in a 32. Would I need to get another customer tailshaft made up for a gtr box replacement?

Also is there anyway to tell if I actually have a gtr box or gts4 box under there. Ie something like a casting mark?

Don't know too much about whats been done to it driveline wise, as I bought it with the 25det in it already, Just know that the gbox is getting noisy and vibrating, and it maybe on its way out.

1. will a tailshaft that fits in a gts4 box fit up to a gtr box with no issues? and

2. Will a r32 gtr box bolt up to a rb25det engine fine? since ive got a gts4 box mated to a rb25 atm.

Since im not running an rb20det in my 32 gts4.

The GTS4 Gear box has a higher gear ratio i think giving it more acceleration..and yes it is not as strong as a gtr

According to the workshop manual. GTS4 have a shorter 1-3 (and maby 4th but dont remeber 100%). Because the gearing is shorter, it offers better acceleration..
