Ride height legal, but bloody ugly!!

Hey Skliner's, been a while but.......er.......anyways.....

Since I got defected some 4 months ago for being too low (lowest point of the car was apparantly 85mm, ie.one tiny angley part of the exhaust to the road) I've adjusted my suspension (easily done in my car) so high that I'm almost embarassed to drive it now.

I've friggin' had it, I want my baby to look like it once did. So I've booked the car in at Trufit Moorabbin (Geoff) to see if he can get the 4" Stainless tucked up further so I can lower the car again.

Question: What is the legal height for my line, in a practical sense? ie.What would the police be looking for if I get pulled over again for height?

I know I could find an answer from some dull legal site, but I'd rather talk to my fellow 'liners about this! Anyways, thanx in advance.

I thought for VIC it was the height of a coke can from the lowest point on the car. My cossie was that with barely a mm to spare and was told by the engineer that was the absolute unladen minimum. Anyone else?

The ground clearance of a vehicle measured from a horizontal road surface to any point on the underside of the vehicle except the tyres, wheels, wheel hubs and brake backing plates shall, with the vehicle in its loaded state as specified by the manufacturer, be not less than:

for any point in the width of the vehicle which is within one metre fore and aft of any axle, 100mm.

saff_cossie, sorry but the coke can principle is wrong because the height of a coke can is around 130mm...

But you're right in saying that your car has to be measured in its unladen weight, ie. with no passengers or even 8 15" subs in the boot. :P

And also, it should be measured on a flat surface, not half in the gutter as my car was tested and failed which ended up being legal when on a flat surface :rofl:

Anyway, getting back to the point, superspit if you do end up getting your exhaust refitted to be able to drop your car to almost 100mm, then i think that's awesome because that's what i'd be doing! Afterall, it is legal!

The cops do like picking on cars that are dumped pretty low though, but if they don't get you for the height then they probably will for something else... So, 100mm is not THAT low...

Whilst I agree with the 100mm rule listed above (a minimum for any car) I understand there is also a rule where they measure from the centre of the wheel to the top of the wheel arch.

(I think the logic is that if you were to dump a 4x4 with 600mm of road clearance down to 100mm, you would alter the suspensions geometry so much that it could become unsafe)

This measurement is meant to be set by the factory and in effect makes it next to impossible to lower a car without an engineers certificate. (I don’t agree with it, but do know of others who have been caught)

Hey PetGTS4, Thankyou, sounds very practical, indeed!

Am still a bit confused over the Laiden/unlaiden testing, and I'm afraid that the cops will always just use 'their' rule of thumb, at the end of the day.....who's gunna argue with them?

Yeah, so Tuesday, get zorst tucked up nice and high, so I can go nice and low!!

      Update time!  The JZX110 had some maintenance needing to be done, so a lot of the seals with replaced to fix some oil leaks. Also used this opportunity to whack on a front mount that I'd bought some time ago.  I also finally got the rear lip painted and fitted.  I then got the exhaust done. It's just a catback for now. Custom made 3" stainless with a turn down. I could have a tip coming out, but it will require cutting the rear lip and possibly the bumper itself. So far I do like and it's made the car a little more zippy.  Close out with some nice pictures of the cars and a sneak peek of what's next.

      Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!)
