Craige that is an A box and I have just got the trannie upgrade (valvebody) and it has made a big difference in my book as the shifts are alot tighter and don't hang (lag) when changing.  Feels like a different car.  Well worth it.

Cheers ICE

Thanks for that info Shane. Where did you get it done here and what did it cost?

Thanks how about an rb25det neo?

No problems, stay under 300 rwkw, big transmission cooler, use good oil and a valve body upgrade. If there is still a bit too much slip first to second, you can upgrade the drive belt to a kevlar one. Usually the 3rd gear clutch pack is OK at that power level, but it can be upgraded as well with 2 extra plates.

For about the price of a good multiplate clutch (in a manual) you can make a very strong auto.

:D

I got the upgrade valve body from MV automatics in SA via SAU Groupbuy. I still cost me around $420 including valvebody, service kit, frieght and deposit. I got Palmerston powersteering and automatics to install it as I know him well and he charged me $333.00 to install the valve body and service kit and fluids. Very happy.

bringin up a very old thread . . . . .

i got a trans fluid leak, when cold says on the dipstick its full ... when hot it says in 1/4 full . . . ( but only just got it filled the other day)

sill question, would the leak reduce cooling temps to the auto box, hence why i get stuck in 3rd, (but turn car off and start again all smooth just taking off in 2nd i think)

my gasket is leaking, bloke thought it might be the solenoids making it stay in 3rd, reading this i tihnk he's right, but if i just replace the gasket should it fix that problem ?

the auto trans guy didnt wanna just replace the gasket, incase it didnt solve the problem then have to take it off again and change the solenoids and a new gasket.

starts to play up with in 400meters of driving

Well, those were exactly my symptoms, and pretty close to the same symptoms as a heap of R34 boxes once they pass about 100-120,000K's... mine was shift solenoids; the new rack costs just under $500 plus fitting of course, and replaces all solenoids I think (at least A and B, pretty sure that's all forward gears) and some pressure regulator, which was playing up on mine.

The symptoms with these solenoids are that when they heat up they start to fail (and as soon as they do, they trip a fault code, and auto goes into limp-mode and you're stuck in 3rd... ALL THE TIME... it sucks :)).

Best of luck... but I'm not thinking that replacing a gasket will fix your issues (unless you can't keep enough trans fluid for 400 metres). If it does fix it, I wish I had your luck!!

its parked up now, has been for the last 4days, staying that way until.

well i think i better flat bed it then, 170 to flat bed it there, crack open the box, tell me the good new, drive home, under 400bucks and a smile,

worst case, 170,plus new solenoids, plus service kit, plus gasket, plus labour. no smile !

yeah im on RACV total care. but i think they only deal with you if your broken down.

i could drive half way there and then call :/

Dude, get a massive transcooler.. you would be suprised the difference a good transcooler can make..

yeah im looking at those now :D . when i get the tranny fixed get them to tap it into the oil lines.

i want it on the front right vent in a V-shape so i can have the oil cooler there also :)

Trans fluid should be checked when hot (i.e. when the fluid isn't sitting in the sump). A fluid leak and resulting low fluid level can cause all sorts of erratic behaviour, the pump (driven by the converter) can have a hard time maintaining flow. Then the converter itself might be low empty, which will cause intermittent drive. It all goes pear-shaped when there's not enough 'hydraulics' to actually make a hydraulic drive...

Getting the box inspected would certainly be a good idea if you think that there's more too is than a small leak. Good luck

TJ,

let me know when you need the oil cooler... i might still be able to get them cheap.

the davis craig ones SK mentions in the tranny thread i think

cheer

ah wicked man , i'll pm you about that :P

south east subs aye, very handy !

Hi boys and girls i have had a series of let downs . As my s2 has been locked in 3rd or some peeps may say limp home mode . But oh no that is not the prob . I visited a good auto trans guy and pointed me in the right direction . I was told it was the shift valve solenoid . Sweet i thought go and order this part and fit it myself . 3 weeks later with filter , gaskets and solenoid . Its just the same $500 don the drain . Then found gbox trouble shooting on this forum . Nissan supplied me the wrong part ! The part they told they were going to supply was not the part that i was supplied . Now ordered the other solenoid . Another $415 i hope this works will be fitted tomorrow . fingers crossed . Here are the part numbers for solenoid a & b . solenoid A - 31940-4ax02 solenoid B - 31940-4ax05 . PLEASE DONT LET YOUR PARTS INTERPERETUR SUPPLY YOU THJE WRONG PART !!!!!

ahh thanks chuckie.

well got no help from him out there lol :D

but mine was doing the same thing, wasnt the solenoids though, they thought it was but not to sure but wanted me to buy new ones anyway $500 just incase.

So i took it to another place they weren't confident it was the solenoids, so they opened it up, seem like the bands and clutch packs were worn, got a whole new rebuild (cheap) and still got the factory solenoids running fine .

HEAT is a factor for the solenoids also to go into limp mode, check temp's and leaks, have your got a Shift Kit installed ? they cause alot of heat inside the stock box because alot more stress and pressure being put through the standard items ....

Good luck any way Cory

Yeah chuckie is right perth is correct . It was the solenoids have replaced both all is sweet now bar the fluid leak i have which will be sorted tomorrow . I dont wish this prob on anyone especially if you are doing it yourself . Just be carefull you dont drop anything when you pull it apart such as springs and washers . But if you do good luck .

    • You shouldn't need to massively fatten up the mixtures for cold conditions. For one thing - 0°C is not that cold. For another, the Haltech will be using the IAT sensor to tell it how dense the air air, and calculate the correct amount of fuelling. Then the cold start enrichment is added as a % on top of that, so it should scale with the main fuelling. You might also doubt the IAT sensor at this time. You're not using one from an RB26 are you? Using a nice Bosch sensor or similar? Happens. Some wideband units take great pleasure in killing their sensors. Put another wideband in the tailpipe and compare. Or just swap the sensor to a brand new one and see.
    • Oh, my misunderstand. When the car was running, it sounded ok, but if I gave it any gas it wanted to die but caught itself afterwards. It's very different from how it was a couple months ago when it was warmer outside. The logs show that the AFRs are better during, what I assume, is warmup enrichment. Because it's cold, and air is more dense, should I work on the enrichment bit?
    • yess of course im not using 2nd hand parts from my spare engine, but the place where i live is hard to find parts for the RB20DET ,but for the RB20E is everywhere including new ones and a lot cheaper ,because for the RB20DET you have to order it overseas to get one and it cost a lot of money 3x the price to be exact. so i ask this topic because if i can use the new ones but for RB20E is it compatible or not. if not im screwed haha, not totally screwed but i have to save a lot of money first before i can begin repairing my engine, thanks for the information before.
    • Unless my sensor just died, was only a couple months old, I strongly believe it didn't. How can I test it? I never mentioned it being 20:1+?
    • Well, you wouldn't use 2nd hand bearings out of another engine anyway....so just buying the proper bearings is obviously what you're going to do. The crankshaft would be common. The conrods might be common. There is essentially nothing else you would be able to use.
