I'm a dickhead!

C. Should I go to Racepace (I know Ben is great @ rebuilds) or leave the work to the dude who has my car at the moment (Cromwell Auto) does allot of rally cars (WRX's and good old 120B's)

Before someone else jumps in, let me say this :

Take it to Ben.

damn   start saving :P

I just started mine on the weekend for the first time after rebuilding it and it has been....interesting.

My recommendations:

Go Arias forgies, about 1200 from Rocket industries including rings.  86.5mm will require a small bore out

Head recondition, new guides and stem seals, get the ports cleaned up a little at the same time

Standard rods should be fine.

ACL make bearings for rb26 now, about 10% of nissan cost.  SR20 big end bearings and RB30 mains.

Whack on a trust exended sump, or even better a local custom made one that won't reduce ground clearance

Balance all the uppy downy roundy roundy bits

Might as well throw in an N1 oil pump but I would not do N1 water pump unless it is a track only car.....they flow a fair bit less by the look of them.

I thought Arias pistons were $1200 from Rocket Industries aswell, until I ordered them... they added GST ($120) and delivery ($30) = $1350....

someone please send me bens contact # too please!

Robin May want to upgrade the oil pump collar to the larger R33 collar as I've been told that they can fail at high RPM (R32 crank collar to drive oil pump is *apparently* too small)

Robin

sorry to hear it. don't go overboard on N1 pumps. The standard oil pump can be upgraded by fitting a 50c spring in the pressure relief and suddenly it's an N1! Actually, going through Fast I discovered that GTR33 and 25t pumps flow exactly the same volume/pressure and have the same part number. Thats gotta hurt the price of GTR oil pumps! The N1 water pump is good for consistent high rpm application, and as yours is a daily it is not worth the effort, even for track unless you are intending extended lapping sessions. Being an R32 it may be worthwhile getting the oil pump drive collar on the crank fixed up to prevent any failure there. Otherwise, Ben is as good as it gets for a spanner man and he should be clued on these issues.

Geoff's right on the money!!!! I was working on a budget with my rebuild and Ben recommended modifying the relief valve, and now she flows like an N1 oil pump!!!!

R32 crank collar is definitely a known point of failure in an RB26. I have pictures of how they wear at home if anyone is interested

Would appreciate some pics - if you can't post them up here pls email to [email protected] :)

JAG - what sort of budget were you looking at to get it to spec? I'm thinking with the ECU and everything else spending around 3.5k to 4k + 20% for extras. Would love to keep the cost lower if possible but does not look likely. Also, probably need a tow down to Racepace...any chance of getting a lift from you?

Robin - I'd allow more than that, mine was around $5k from memory, without ecu.....

As far as tow no probs, just let me know when you need it moved and give me a call on 0419877437.... Might want to check with Ben first when he can accept the car....

Cheers

ohh Robin so sad to hear my thoughts are with "XXXGTR" may it come back stronger than ever.

i dont know much about engine rebuilds but i would have to agree with Jack when it comes to price, as i have been looking at different bits and pieces and it quickly adds up. dont forget to add labour as well.

but i just wanted to add as far as ECU goes i know alot of people recomend Apexi Power FC's but you might wanna talk to Sam at XTC performance in Coburg, as he has the software to re mapp your standard ECU to the same out come as an aftermarket, but it will still have a sensor (knock sensor i think it is) to retard the engine if it ever has a bad tank of fuel or somthing like that.

well any way good luck and dont stress it will all be fine.

Having tried 3 Melbourne tuners since being in Vic...id recommend spending the $1200-1500 on a PFc and getting the car tuned at Racepace. You can get 2nd GTR Pfc for around $800

One tuner i was pretty happy with considering the time they did it in, good power when on boost, nice driveability, idle. Its just that on low boost it didnt make any power at all, and it got crappy fuel economy. And the ignition seemed to be retarded a little too far meaning water temps ran 3-4 degrees higher then usual.

Id go so far as saying that the $1500 odd for Pfc and Racepace tune is better spent then getting std ecu re-mapped and running aftermarket rods.

Dont skimp on tune...especially if your going to keep the car honest when its rebuilt by gettig up it:)

Can't really get my head around what it is I want within a resonable budget. Looking more expensive than original plan... either way, where there is a will there is a way!

I think my biggest drama is working out weather I want to go down that road and turning the car into a weekend racer (what I 'd love to do in time) and get a run-a-round or keep it as my day to day transport (which is also very nice... nothing better than jumping in the GTR to go to work in the morning, makes for a nice start to the day - missing that at the moment)

I think at the end of the day I will need to keep it real and get the car on the road ASAP as I do not have a back-up. Looks like I need to crunch those numbers again :(

All the people asking for contact details, there is a sticky thread at the top of this forum, with all recommended workshops listed.

Robin: Guess you should write down the 2 different options

1. Built it into a weekend car/track car - write down what you would like the car to have/be able to acheive, work out a timeline for it and budget for it

2. Keep it as a daily driver and track car - write down what you want out of it and work out a timeline/budget for it...

if you go for option 1, then you would probaly want to buy a run around shitbox right away so you don't have to stress about getting the GTR back on the road ASAP, you can do reasearch and think about it more.. if you go for option 2.. then i guess you need to get into gear.... I'd probably do(and probably will do when my engine goes) the same thing Jack has, forged pistons, and whatever else ben recommends for a daily driver, sometimes track car. Probably budget around 6k for the engine rebuild not including ECU etc..

Had a good talk with Ben this arvo and my car aint going nowhere soon... I have to find a small fortune as soon as I can. See you boys on Sunday, whoever is going down to Sandown... otherwise, see you on the road in a few months ;)

I have to find a small fortune as soon as I can.

Grey St... ?

Try not to stress, its not the end of the world (yet) :)

Hope it goes well..

OH and if you want a daily driver I have a Gazelle I need to sell one of these days! (been lazy)

Sorry to hear mate about your engine mate but I'm sure with some time and money all will be well, just sucks about the money bit but a lot of us know the feeling also.

I'd recommend a Holden Service center for the work persoanlly......hehehe, just had to be different.

Nah but really, if you need anything let me know, lifts etc (if you go with Benno). I live very close :)
