NewKleer
I replaced my radiator a while ago cause it developed a leak in the middle of the radiator - so i was wondering if the leaking radiator is of any use to anyone, ie can it be repaired? Duncan
yep sure can, I've had a few repaired, under $50 if it can be fixed. Otherwise new core and re-use the old end tanks. NewKleer
do they just weld it or something if its a minor one? mine was spraying "mist" out of it, so i think it was tiny (couldnt find the hole when i took it out). might take it somewhere and see what they can do thanks Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/68713-can-a-radiator-with-leak-be-repaired/#findComment-1273220 Share on other sites
maxforce
cheap fix buy a bottle of chemweld cost $20. drain out the old water in tank plugged it back up. pour the deed in fill wit water and done. chemweld seals any crank in radiator and engine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/68713-can-a-radiator-with-leak-be-repaired/#findComment-1273299 Share on other sites
geordie
Mine was heavily rusted out, full rebuild cost $165, so theres a worst case senario price for you. JiVE
Not sure if its the same problem, but I had a large split in my top tank. Got the whole top tank replaced, full system flush and refill for less than $200. Beer Baron
cheap fix buy a bottle of chemweld cost $20. drain out the old water in tank plugged it back up. pour the deed in fill wit water and done. chemweld seals any crank in radiator and engine that is why I would NEVER put chemweld in my motor. Think about what that crap does to all the water galleries in the head. Think about what it does to your water pump. That is the cheapest nastiest way to fix a radiator and could possibly cost you your engine. Duncan
I've got a big wrap on chemiweld. If you don't car about the long life of your engine it is a great stop gap, sorted out the farked head gasket on the ute perfectly. Wouldn't be doing it to a turbo skyline though, and certaintly not for a radiator problem Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/68713-can-a-radiator-with-leak-be-repaired/#findComment-1275111 Share on other sites
maxforce
go get a second hand one. they normally cost about $150 bucks. dont be tight about it otherwise ya not gonna have a car to drive around it you take short cut. soon ya engine gonna overheat, lose water and bye bye engine. benl1981
Take your old radiator to a radiator shop . They will be happy to have it. They will proabbly use the core or some part of it Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/68713-can-a-radiator-with-leak-be-repaired/#findComment-1362624 Share on other sites
R33S2
"do they just weld it or something if its a minor one?" They either solder or braise the hole, its a hard job because its gotta be perfectly clean but relativly simple. If the hole was caused by corosion its Farked but a stone could be the culprit and then its repairable. Jax
Anyone who is too critical of Chemiweld, does'nt know how it works, or what effect it has in engine block [no bad or 'blocking'effects] This is a valid critisism of a number of similar products. That said, it's not meant as a radiator repair. I don't know for sure, but it may work on some current 'alloy' cores, but it definately will not seal a brass core. Unless they've recently changed the formulation, it says clearly in the instructions, that it's NOT for radiator repairs. Don't constru these remarks as a general approval of 'leak repair goos' generally. I agree that not a good thing except emergency repairs, and then everything needs a thorough clean out to be sure you're rid of it all.
