Hi Guys,

The new bit of the Roe Hwy has just opened and is awaiting cars to lay some fresh rubber. You can get on to it from the Kenwick link off Albany Hwy, as you head down there are barriers to the unfinished part but about 2km's of newly laid tarmac in a dead straight line.

I'm heading out there tonight to see if I can improve my 1/4mile times before I head down the drags next week. Just picked up a spare set of 17x9's to put my 265x35 tyres on, in the hope of getting traction.

Anyway, I would suggest we make the most of it before the cops start to patrol there.

Hi Hicks,

What a weak excuse, I got no money for fuel!! Anyway I went down and did a couple of runs, it really is quite an ideal setup.

The best I managed was a 14.02 @168km/hr, but I still had significant wheel spin. Hopefully when it put the 265x35's on I should get better traction, but no excuses.

I don't know how the APEX'i RSM compare to actual 1/4mile time, I'd be glad to hear from someone with experiences.

I think I'll be down there every night practising my launches, If anyone want to join me then PM me and we'll organise a time.

RSM's and g-techs are good little tools. They are accurate but, the difference between the actual 1/4 and the RSM measurements is the 'surface' you drive on.

Overall the RSM/G-tech is accurate for the 'street' measurement and is good for detecting the results of a tune (provided its done on the same road / conditions). When used at the same time as a real 1/4 run the results are identical or close enough to be considered the same. This does not however mean that someones g-tech or RSM results are worth comparing to someone elses actual 1/4 time. The 1/4 is almost always going to be much slower due to the traction handicap. :D

I haven't put the g-sensor in yet, but seeing as it is cheap I'll do that soon. The main problem is getting grip. I tried launching off 4000rpm but all I get is wheelspin.

Other guys with GTS-t's what sort of revs will give you best launch, as it will be my 60ft time which is killing me. What shifting technique do you guys use, flatshift, powershift?

i dunno about the RSM cause mine says i do i 13.68 1/4 mile time??? which i dont rekon would be correct, and thats with the G-Sensor connected to it aswell??

i suppose ill have to take it down to the 'Plex to see what it actually does, but i seriously doubt it will be a 13.68. not unless something has been done to my 'line that i dont know about, by the previous owner.

Do you think bigger tyres will make much difference? I have 235's on but have a set of 265's for the drags.

I know my clutch doesn't slip now, but launching from 3000rpm got me a slower time than wheelspinning did.

I will keep practising at my new drag strip, trying to improve my launches.

I will go down this Wednesday to the drags to observe and then go in and try my luck the following week. I definately want to get into the high to mid 13's, but only time will tell.

wider tyres will definantly help

i have rock hard 235 on the back, that why i got 70,000km out of them there being replaced in February so i might get 80,000km out of them

tyre pressure helps i usually drop em to 20-22psi and do a little burnout. just went through my time slips my best 60 foot time 2.132 sec but i missed a gear and ran a 14.12. i haven't been down since i fitted the diff lock kit which also helps just ask rev210 and rob77.

wider grippier tyres will help.

also try and get in the left lane at the drags its the faster one, just always seems to throw up the better times.

Your launches will be very different to the street, the only way to 'practice' is to go to the strip.

Tips:

* let down your tyres 16-20psi

* Launch at a point where you would normally juuuust 'bog down' on the street (rest assured you will wheelspin at the plex anyway).

* don't run super low profile tyres at full inflation.

R33_Cam : Your car probably does do a 1/4 in 13.6 onm the street (I'm sure you have the power to weight to do this), however you're right about it not translating to a real 1/4 strip for reasons I have mentioned before. Don't poo poo the readings they are often correct just not comparable across different environments.

Note: most car manufacturer/magazine tests occur on more 'favourable' track conditions suited to a street cars tyre and suspension setup. This data you can almost always compare to your RSM/G-tech results. Go to the strip and you see how manufacturer claims seem overly 'fast' , when really they are just taken from more ideal testing grounds.

What suspension setup do your recommend? I have heard ppl say anything from stock through to coilovers are the best.

I have coilovers, but I can change the bound/rebound rates. They are really stiff, is this a good or bad thing? The new tyres will be on tommorow night.

Is anyone going to the Motoplex tommorow night?

Well suspension wise its a bit tricky....

I think you can live with coil overs on the rear only. I think they help when you do a full install of the diff cradle pineapples to minimise the diff bounce you can experience with softish stock rear shocks.

softest setting/stock for the front suspension and reasonably hard suspension on the back works for most applications. I don't think you need to compromise at all on your day to day twisty performance to have something half way decent for the strip.

I'd personally just get a set of koni's and king springs over the more expensive coil over setup (read a waste of money). Unless 'rice' is your thing, this is the reason people often get coil overs and blow off valves.

The whiteline suspension kit (pineapples) is part no. KCA349. go buy it today! about $114.

Gtst vspec ; the coil over comment wasn't aimed at you btw, its just to discourage people who really don't need them away to better more cost effective options.

With the coil overs you need to set it to a nice soft setting all round if you don't have the pineapples.

The coilovers I have are Quantum Racing, and others on the forum say they cost between 350,000 and 450,000 yen. Don't worry I didn't pay anywhere near that much, in fact I got them for the same price as a set of Koni adjustables. Its great having friends who import Jap cars. These are made of aluminum, and are used for serious track races, not rice at all, but probably too stiff for WA roads.

My car is more in mind of high speed cornering than drag racing, but I'm quite keen to see how it will go on the strip, just to see if all the money I have spent equates to much.

Hardest is not always best even for track work, having said that you should be able to take them to a fairly reasonable softer setting.

The KCA349 kit basically takes out the sloppy compliance in the rear diff cradle. Instead there is a better transfer of energy through the cradle and a better geometry/angle for rear squat and transfer of power to the rear tyres. Something you need more of even for a track car when powering out of corners.

Basically there are benifits for both track,strip and drift use with these kits in the various configs they offer.

Alright I'm sold, I'll see if I can order and get them fitted before I go the the strip next week.

Do you know of a good suspension place where they will be able to setup my coilovers properly. At the moment the settings are unknown, and idiots like Pedder's can't do anything unless it's mums shopping trolley. I need someone who races cars to set it up, any ideas?

    • It's about the same time for me from Bunnings, or the Fasteners. My big push away from takeaway food, and gluten in general keeps me away from the Bunnings Snags too! Weather up here, I've been out for two walks today in the beautiful sunshine. Had a few little drizzles, and some wind, that honestly, a tin of beans and I could compete on how harsh she blows Thankfully, being this bit inland, we're not getting anything much really. Will probably pick up a bit more when/if Cyclone Alfie decides to come ashore. A few areas in the GC though, and south into NSW are really getting smashed though! Right now, I'm just annoyed Alfie hasn't hit, as I'm not allowed to crack into the BBQ foods like the bacon and eggs until the Cyclone hits "In case we lose power"...
    • I love fastener joints, the price difference between them and joints like Bunnings or Super Cheap is amazing, and they either have exactly what you want, or they can get it to quick They have even given me some for free when I only needed a couple of specific size In saying this, I have paid premium for fasteners from Bunnings if they have the sizes I need, but only for convenience really, as my local is only 10 minutes away, the Sushi joint near them is also a consideration  How's the weather Matt?     • Wideband is worth setting up if only for tuning purposes. I would not mess with the ignition system unless there's a misfire. HKS crank trigger is popular out here for the relatively easily sourced Denso crank sensor, not a bad idea to install as well regardless of power level on a standalone. Boost leak test is worth thinking about. Oil pressure sensor tied to a fuel cut isn't a bad idea either. Getting the tune figured out is a good idea. Without putting eyes on it and getting under it there's no way for us to tell you exactly what it needs but most likely you're down to the last 10% that will make a big, big difference in how happy you are with the car.

    • Any plans for E85? If so, add flex fuel sensor.   I'd probably add in the sensors I mentioned above if the Link will support using them for engine protection. With water pressure, you need to be able to effectively set it that "If temp > X, and pressure = atmospheric, shutdown" as at running temp, you should be able to read pressure in the cooling system. If pressure suddenly disappears, it means the water went some where, and this is a quicker reaction than waiting on water temp to go up (Which, can take a little longer than you'd like, considering it now has to wait for hot air to heat it up) Oil pressure, Oil temp, both would be on my list too if you're looking to add sensors. Wideband O2. And at least one EGT sensor. If you're feeling deluxe, put in individual runner EGTs. Single EGT sensor is more so forget about a specific number, get used to "What is normal EGTs", and then keep an eye on it, if it starts going away from "normal" it's a sign something is wrong (Also, things like the tune can still start going out of spec, but EGTs may not show it, for example one injector starts running leaning, so ECU richens everything up, now 5 out of 6 cylinders are rich, and running cool, with one cylinder lean and running hotter, so it's not perfect) Then there is your other things to look at non sensor related, but you may have already done, or have underway, and that would be things like building a sump for more oil, and better oil control under high G-Forces (Cornering, brakes, acceleration). Basically, the above is worth looking/thinking about, if the ECU can do protective stuff with it, and you continue to use it how you are (Drive it to the track, thrash it, drive home, repeat once every 3 to 4 months)
