Which coils fail from heat?

People say to leave the valley cover off to prevent the coils from failing. Is this only on the inbuilt ignitors? Do Rb20 and RB26 guys have the same problem when the ignitor is on top of the cover?

I was thinking that it may be the ignitor that fails because Nissan use a heat sink on the Rb26 ignitors.

One of my rb20 coil packs died.

Managed to find which one and replaced it.

but during the testing to find which one it was, I had the coil cover off, and cable tied the ignitor to the firewall.

Thanks. I know the coils fail but some people say that leaving the cover off helps the coils and I know the ignitor is the critical part that gets hot so I just thought maybe the external ignitor ones wouldn't benefit from having the cover off.

my ignitor (rb20) has a heat sink too so it wasn't something changed over time

from what i understood the leaving off of the cover was to let heat out as the coils are covered in plastic which cracks under extreme heat

that being said, the ingitor has a ground wire which requires the coil pack cover to be in place... i think most people cut the cover right after the ignitor so that the cover is basically 90% gone with just the ignitor part left at the far end
