Hi there I am seeking advice from anyone re the following enquiry on my 1988 TI skyline sedan

I have had the following done recently to my car

Fuel injectors and screens serviced and replaced

New fuel pump

New fuel filter

New oil pump

6 new high range heat plugs

6 new high tension plug leads

Tune up!

Engine still running rough more so at idle speeds where it can even choke and stall at times

Periodical fowling of one or more plugs

This engine was thoroughly rebulit by 'repco' 150.000 ks ago

Local engine replacement experts want $4000 + to replace same with an exchange motor

As pensioners it is NOT possible to replace vehicle as it is still a great and comfortable car

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Jim

What heat range spark plugs? Should be 6 (if NGK plugs - BCPR6ES-11).

How good is the distributor? Helped a couple of guys recently with a misfire that turned out to be sloppiness in the dizzy shaft. Get the dizzy overhauled, I think that might be a contributor, especially after 150k+ ks.

I have heard of blocked catalytic converters causing similar symptoms. Does she do a lot of around town running and not a lot of K's? Blocked cat? Nothing a bit of "violence" to the cat won't fix, but you didn't hear that from me... Just something to look at if the other solutions don't help.

maybe it was tuned too low

i know it might sound stupid, but i know our '88 exec actually is tuned to 16 or so degrees from top dead centre and it runs better than at 15 degrees (thats what the sticker says on the underside of the bonnet, should be left hand side, near the front)

that might need to be checked

(some people are actually silly and tune it too slightly less than what it should be, and yes i have seen this been done, from a mechanic!)
