Roll Call: Need a tune? Smoky's from Top Secret Japan is coming downunder

Recommended Posts

This would be good to compare tuning houses from OZ to one of the best houses in Japan.

SUB ZERO

RIGOLI

RACEPACE/ICE

CROYDON

TILBROOK

ETC, ETC

Some one go get a really good tune at one of the big shops then go to Smokey and see if he can better it. I have my doubts as some of the OZ shops are quie impressive!

West, tuning is tuning...Smoky tunes all across the world. Do some research mate.

Tuning comes down to Air/Fuel ratios and timing.

aussie conditions? i think JAPAN has more extreme varients in conditions compared to australia so in return they do have slighter better fuel..

We already have the best tuner  :P

Benno @ RacePace

Gotta remember, the fuel over here is far different to what the Japanese would normally be used to :)

good mate then use him. This is open to people who know a little bit about tuning a car. I suggest for people like yourself wait for some results. They should talk for themselves, not me.

nismoid I didn't know Ben could tune F-con V pro?

lol, why would you bother?

if only a few here in Aust can tune it.... and then you do a mod to the car that requires a retune... you gonna pay for him to fly over again Brett?

Can you tune my car for me R31Nismoid

R31Nismoid actualy did a pretty good job on my car:)

I think its cool that he is coming out here to tune cars, but i suspect there could very well be better tuners locally for certain ECUs. The fact that he can tune the HKS etc ecus will help out some:)

Remember to take him to Kings Cross, The Bourbon & Beef Steal, a Parra V Bulldogs game and Parra Speedway, otherwise he will never really understand why we are the way we are:thumbsup:

R31 please post your negative thoughts and opinions to me at jball@challenger.com.au

or PM.

sounds like you are full of knowledge. and yes I will be bringing Smoky here again and again, as the demand is there.

also if you change you I/C or plenum down the track Im sure it can work around his irregular visits for now, btw how often to you upgrade your car?

im not being negative in my thoughts.

read all my posts. i'm being logical, and realistic if anything.

I need not go over them again.

You NSW all seem to get up on the wrong side of the bed

I upgrade my car when i feel i can gain something more, or something is lacking

As with most people.

ok great. so if you could pm me with your ideas.

obviously you dont want a tune and you are supporting your local tuner which is great, good on you. I am bringing Smoky here because I have found from experience no one I dont care how long they have been in Australia (which has nothing to do with it anyway) All am going on is experience..and please tell me if i'm wrong but i beleive Top Secret has more experience with Skylines and performance cars for many more years that just about any tuner in this country.

things like tuning cam gears etc would take someone with 1000+ cars under his belt much less time to tune than a person with say 50?

not really. as every car is undoubtably different... 10 cars or 100 cars.

Yeah, some are similar and techniques used are of that nature also.

its a challenge from the get-go, and thats what tuners love im sure.

Each RB motor is different too.

I dont doubt his abilities at all. He is a well respected tuner in Japan. Im just not one too get too excited when things in Australia are just as good as OS, and if not they are getting there very fast in the past 2-3 years.

I doubt the japanese would get too excited if we sent one of our tuners over there who was just as good :D

They are loyal people the Japanese

I was expecting a PM. this is not a chat room. Can this thread please be locked, all geniune interest in tuning please PM or email jball@challenger.com.au

i've got to do some work too...

if they were just as good im sure the japanese would be outsourcing...MOTEC is huge in Japan for many of the big workshop cars as its an excellent ecu, and is known as the cream of the crop, but they are still tuned over there.

Who made your TV at home R31? Japan is known for there electronics, so leave it to the professionals as they would say? enough said.

please lock the thread.

    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts
    • There's a huge reason manufacturers are tuning in dead flat torque curves... Make them reliable (and more drive able)
    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
