Hey everyone,

Can someone please tell me how I can fix a small problem with my car. I own a R32 4 door (rb20det) as I drive along my car will start dieing, the revs will drop and sometimes it will stall or suddenly pick up again. Sometimes it will stall and will not start after about 10 mins of trying, I have changed the air flow meter twice. I could go ahead and take my car to tokyo toys in which they forward the car onto a place down the coast which do a dyno read outs and hopefully find failures in my engine, but for it to do that my car needs to be broken down which most of the time it does not do.

I live in brisbane and was wondering if anyone could help me

thanks guys

Sik32,

The revs dying then picking up again sounds like it may be a fuel issue. When you say that sometimes you can't start the car for 10 mins, can you be more specific. Is it flooding or not enought voltage to cause a proper spark?

There are a number of things it could be, AFM is just one of them, but having replaced it twice it seems unlikely. The coilpacks on the RB series can start to play up when they get hot, and wont provide sufficient spark for combustion.

If you provide us with more details we will try and narrow your search down.

To GTS-t VSPEC,

Thanks for the reply, when i drive along and the engine dies then I pull over and turn the igniton to start the car. It just windes over , I wait 10 -15 mins then it starts. Sumtimes it will start straight away whilst still rolling.

Also as i drive along a highway the engine nearly dies I hold down the accelerator and then it just picks back up and goes like normal.

Good luck ,

ps. Im getting a datastream print out for it on monday do u think this might find this intimiting problem

Sik32,

Its difficult to tell with an intermitant problem such as this, I would be leaning towards faulty coilpacks as the problem. The would cause a miss which could cause the revs to drop and stall the car. This is can be related to the engine being hot, hence the reason its intermitant.

It might be worth taking the coil-pack cover off and having a look at both your coilpacks and sparkplugs, if something is wrong then you might have a burn spot around the coilpack cover, or one sparkplug might have a burnt appearance.

I take it you haven't noticed it missing whilst driving or difficult to start in the morning? Do you have any fuel management running?

I hope we can start to narrow this down further, but start looking there as it won't cost you anything if you do it yourself.

Guest Boxhead

im not sure if this will help or not..

but.. when i was driving my na behind dave and another guy, a mini cruise, they were going medium, so basically to keep in eyes distance, i had to go flat out..

we pulled over somewhere.. leavin car runnin, just to get out and decide were we are going, which way etc, we decide, i go back to my car, and suprisingly engine is off.. i try to start it.. and it wont start, starter motor is workin, can hear that etc, but engine wont kick over, however... the heat gauge is showing in the middle(as per usual..) you must keep in mind it was a bit of a bloody hot day..

anyway, after waiting ten minutes.. car did start again, but you could here it miss firing in higher revs.. like, if i put foot down, it would misfire etc.. but.. if i graduly went up to those revs it wouldnt mind..

I got home, and my grandfather who is an ex mechanic, said it sounds like an over heatin problem with spark plugs or coil packs etc check your plugs.!!!

i know myn were platinum and were almost ready for a new set..

i hope this helps mate

Its me again,

I thought I would clarify what i mean by what happends when the car breaks down, the engine actually dies its not a matter of revs dropping , although being in the driving seat u see the revs lowering but if your engine is going to stop obviously your revs are going to drop.

I know its a electrical problem such as a sensor of some sort, is there any sort of check on sensors that I could do ?

what sensors could cause this.

ps monday datastream test hopefully will shed some light on the issue.

Keep you posted.

If you have a factory computer and a faulty sensor then you will most likely be able to get the fault code out of the computer, you can either do this your self or get a tuner to do it.

I think the codes are available somewhere in a thread on this forum, or you could go to Meggala's website as I'm sure it will be there.

I'd imagine that suggests that it is not one of your sensors, therefore I think that coilpacks are the most likely culprit.

I don't know if anything will show up on the datastream test if the problem is intermitant, but good luck anyway.

Praise from the heavens above.

Finally, I took my car to Gavin Woods Auto Tech and the problem was that my car had to break down in order for him to work out the problem so i arrived at his workshop at about 10, I gave Gav my keys and he went for a spin I didnt ask him if it broke down on the drive but I doubt it did. Anyways he pulls into the workshop and the car is just idleing next minute its spluters then dies. I knew that this was gonna be it, probly the first time I wished for my car to break down and it did. He had the datastream computer hooked upto my car and he knew what it was straight away. The fuel pump is officially f***ed, Gav hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to my car and it was flowing about 30 on his gauge after he put his foot down it didnt really move and his eyes nearly popped out of his sockets. It is meant to be up around the 60 to 90 when hitting boost causeing my car to lean out dangerously and the computer says naaaaar stuff this and goes out for lunch.

I am now ordering a 500hp rating pump and on the way to havin a car which I can drive everywhere without being afraid of stoppin at light and or driving down the coast without being rear ended.

Thanks very much to everyone for your help especially GTS-t VSPEC,

take care guys.

R324DRIFT,

Great to hear that your car is now fixed, and you were very lucky that it died in front of him, otherwise you would have had to wait until it had officially died before you realised.

I hope you have many km's of hassle free driving.

See'ya

    • We have some genuine Japanese legally decommissioned car number plates now in stock 🙂 Add some legitimately obtained JDM style to your Skyline or other Japanese model, or simply as a garage/man cave decoration! About the 40mm hole: The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport in Japan recognised the popularity of keeping decommissioned plates among car enthusiasts and came up with a method to "destroy" (or render them unusable for street use) while still retaining their collectable/usable value for display etc.  We have 40mm hole covers available to cover the hole nicely with a Sakura motif, which are also available in white in (very!) limited quantities, however they frequently sell out. Please let me know if you're wanting one or more of these and I'll check availability. The Sakura motif covers are more common. https://www.oemsoko.co.jp/products/genuine-decommissioned-japanese-vehicle-number-plate-set-su-7515 https://www.oemsoko.co.jp/products/genuine-decommissioned-japanese-vehicle-number-plate-set https://www.oemsoko.co.jp/products/genuine-japanese-vehicle-number-plate-400mm-hole-cover *Please note that we can't obtain particular number or area name (eg: "Gunma 500 Fu ・86") if requested. All plates are provided as they become available after decommissioning.
    • Ah, fair enough. For the IAT, I'm using a legit GM sensor that was used on the car prior to my current build. I'll get another wideband and IAT ordered and follow up when they show up. Thanks for the help.
    • You shouldn't need to massively fatten up the mixtures for cold conditions. For one thing - 0°C is not that cold. For another, the Haltech will be using the IAT sensor to tell it how dense the air air, and calculate the correct amount of fuelling. Then the cold start enrichment is added as a % on top of that, so it should scale with the main fuelling. You might also doubt the IAT sensor at this time. You're not using one from an RB26 are you? Using a nice Bosch sensor or similar? Happens. Some wideband units take great pleasure in killing their sensors. Put another wideband in the tailpipe and compare. Or just swap the sensor to a brand new one and see.
    • Oh, my misunderstand. When the car was running, it sounded ok, but if I gave it any gas it wanted to die but caught itself afterwards. It's very different from how it was a couple months ago when it was warmer outside. The logs show that the AFRs are better during, what I assume, is warmup enrichment. Because it's cold, and air is more dense, should I work on the enrichment bit?
    • yess of course im not using 2nd hand parts from my spare engine, but the place where i live is hard to find parts for the RB20DET ,but for the RB20E is everywhere including new ones and a lot cheaper ,because for the RB20DET you have to order it overseas to get one and it cost a lot of money 3x the price to be exact. so i ask this topic because if i can use the new ones but for RB20E is it compatible or not. if not im screwed haha, not totally screwed but i have to save a lot of money first before i can begin repairing my engine, thanks for the information before.
