Hi guys I am relitively new to the club and I am in the process of selling my car and about to buy my first ever boosted car the car I am looking at is a 1997 GTS 5speed manual 2 door coupe in white the car has done a suposedly 107,000klm (can never really believe the odometer) the car has all the usual electrical stuff it only has a Apexi pod filter as far as performance gear goes it also has G-max type 17" rims and full Pioneer sound gear also has a very mild body kit and has not been lowered too much (still looks legal ride hieght) also has a Apexi turbo timer and laserline Car alarm, the car sounds and looks nice but I am unsure due to the pricing of the car as it seems cheap consider age etc, I know I have not given you too much info on the car but I was hoping that I might be able to get an opinion as to what sort of price i should be looking at for buying this car and what else I should be looking at in ways of possible problems the car is located north of perth

any help here would be mostly appreciated

Yeah I think I may off seen this particular car advertised his is 104kklm has s/s exhaust filter BOV it is 1995 M spec and is asking $18950.... unfortunately I don't like the rims

you mentioned about a leak test what is this - do you mean like a compression test - any suggestions as to how I can get this done seeing as I live 200klm away from the car and can only get to Perth on weekends or is there another way of checking that everything is ok don't feel like taking the cover and intake pipes off to check spark plugs ect.... what about mobile mechanics how good are they?

and yes the price he is asking is $20k

sorry I was joking I should of put a smiley in there.... the car looks fine and sounds awesome but it is a couple of years older than the other one that I am looking at.....

I suppose I have spent so much money on my other car that I am not wanting to spend quite so much on a new one and not change too many things over... my Lancer has not many stock parts left on it, it still drives nice and goes great I think I am over the " lets see how much we can change it" so just looking for a stockish (virgin)kind of car.... though I am sure I will end up doing a few minor mods in the way of I/C and exhaust just not yet

well I checked the car out and I was a little disappointed with the car as to general condition it had rust on the bottem edge of the rear window were the screws went in and some of this rust had bubbled.... then there was also rust inside the engine bay on some of the seam welds (not seen that before) then the gentleman had not changed the cam/timing belts at the 100kklm mark - I know you are all going to say that it was probably done when it was first complied I say why risk it... also needed 3 new tyres and a full service

Something I did notice and hopefully someone can help out with this when driving the car the gear box felt notchy and then in general driving I could feel a small vibration coming thru the gear lever is this normal or something to be aware of

So the search continues will check out the car in Rockingham I think as it appears that people who mod there cars are more likely to look after them... I hope

quite normal for a skyline to have a notchy gearbox - especially in second and when its cold.

If you change the oil with redline shockproof lightweight, the notchyness should go away. A bit of vibration through the shifter is normal too. Having aftermarket suspension and wheels tends to increase the NVH of a car.

BTW, if you were after a 94 gtst with a few mods and 78k kms, let me know :D

I think most of the time if the car wasn't owned by a young goon that'll mainly be the case. I know I service my car ever ~4000kms, and include things like new coolant, oil, oil filter, plugs, clean out my pod, detail the engine bay, tighten screws and nuts, check diff oil and gearbox oil condition every time.

I know these things might seem pedantic, but I didn't spend rediculous amounts of fold to let the car go to hell.

I am the same with my Lancer... I know it is just a Lancer but all the same it is my pride and joy and have spent too much money to let it go to hell - the gentleman that has bought the car is getting a hell of a deal after I have seen what is out there on offer

    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
