Hi Guys,

I got a response back from Sub-zero about the HKS vs. Toda.

the Toda gears are alot better than hks because of the aluminium they are made

of..

Toda is 7000 series alloy

HKS is 6000 series alloy

Sub-zero

I am not happy with the price they offered, so I'll continue to screw the price down. Currently nengun is cheaper, and I've ask him to see if he can get other types of cam gears.

Anyone else have a possible source?

Theres also STR Power, an american based company who have adjustable gears available for the RB26 on request from Motorex. Very well made.

I've send them an email asking for single pricing and 5+ set pricing to Australia. It probably won't be good news though, considering the value of the aussie peso.

Ask them to explain exactly what this means....believe me, it's not a case of bigger numbers being 'better'.

I was about to order HKS and after hearing stories from a friend I've decided to give the HKS a miss. I am now going to probably get the Tomei Cam gears. Tomei make two types - 1) A steel wheel with steel teeth and 2) an alluiminium one.

Someone has told me that the alluminium one has steel teeth still. Does anyone know?

Also how much difference would you expect the weight of the gears to make?

I use HKS cam gears and my rb20det puts out 210rwkw and my friends rb20det s13 silvia also has them and his car makes 250rwkw. Neither of us have had any problems with them breaking or changing the settings.

They need to be set up on a dyno. We spend nearly 8 hours on the dyno to get them just right.

Hey Guys,

Good comments from all of you. I don't know how much of a difference the 6000->7000 grade aluminum makes, but they recommend the Toda gears and they sell both.

Yes you do see HKS gears on big horsepower cars, I never said they break, but there do appear to be alot of rumors as to there reliability.

Dialling in the cam gear will take a while on the dyno, there is alot of adjustment between the overlap between the inlet and exhaust cams, each providing a slightly different power curve.

400HP, How much for the Tomei ones?

Gradenko, The more prices the merrier, although after looking at the price of the Jun gear I'll give them a miss.

I have had heaps of interest but it seems that people prefer to pay 17k for a car and then mod it ???? Perhaps these people don't realise how much it REALLY costs to mod a car.

I have one guy that seems super keen but is unable to get up to see my car so I hope he sorts himself out soon so I can sell it.

My mechanic has offered me a set of adjustable cam gears for my s2 r33.

Should I get them now that I have:

pod filter, FMIC, turbo back exhaust, high flow cat, high flowed turbo, and a profec B (on its way from nengun).

My mechanic also mentioned that to increase boost above 1bar (which he recommends me running after its been on the dyno to see if everything is ok) I would need to get a aftermarket fuel pump and then if needed, injectors.

Finaly, what sort of price should I pay my mechanic to install the cam gears if i end up purchasing them?

BTW, once i get whatever is needed to get me 13sec 1/4 miles i'll get a powerFC.

If anyone in VICTORIA would like to be in a group buy, i would like to be in it. PM me and let me know, please.

I am assuming that the WOLF 3D V4 ems could take full advantage of this, and can eliminate the NVCS.

This buy would need to happen soon though, as my WOLF is being upgraded and retuned next week (to eliminate some minor bugs)

I know this doesn't really fit in with the group buy tack that this thread is taking, but I have a mate that owns a pretty kick ass machine shop and he said that he reckons he can make cam gears no worries if he has a design to copy from.

I told him if he could do it cheap enough, he'd sell bucket-loads of em. The prototype(s) would be fitted to my car and dyno tuned with before and after results recorded.

** All I need is a gear to copy from in the first place **

Anyone?

Cheers,

Adrian.
