A mate of mine wants to buy my old R32 GTR Engine.

Ive heard that an RB25 Gearbox bolts up to a GTR Engine & Also bolts up to an SR20.

So does this mean that his SR20 Box will bolt up to the GTR Engine??

Anyone know about this?

Thanx

Should do, maybe with some mod.

The S14 Gearbox is quite strong. Much nicer than the S15 one. A number of people have changed thier S15 boxes to the S14, although you loose the gear, you gain strength.

Dunno how it would go with the added torque of an RB26 though. But good boxes for thier money

It would be a waste of time due to the cost and time involved in making an adapter as they do not bolt staright up just as the RB25 box does not bolt up to the SR as it also needs an adapter. It wouldn't last long behind a RB26 anyway. Just use a RB25 5 speed.

Thanks for the insight guys. Just wondering what the best option was. He is thinking about the RB26 In an S14 200SX. Adapter plates and so forth would be a piece of piss but I figured that it wouldn't be strong enough.

Cheers,

Rhys

So what do S14 drivers upgrade to when they get big power behind the SR20s??? I thought they kept the same box... so I would have thought it would have been fine unless he went insane on the engine and took it past what you could do to an SR.

People with big power SR's quite often run a RB25DET box with a modified bellhousing.

A GTR gearbox with the transfer case "removed" will fit into the S14 tunnel with only slight mods.

The RB25 box is basically that. As far as I am aware, the RB25 box has the same internals as the GTR box, just without the transfer case...

Jeff.

yeah, people charge upto $300 less ive found for a GTR box as opposed to an RB25 one.

that said, shopping around can net you either at a cheap price if you are patient.

I laneded my 25 box for $1300 and that included the whole tailshaft etc

Maybe different in NZ.. I can pickup a R32 GTR box for under $1000. A 25T box is $1500-$2000.

The box I am running in my Silvia was a RB26 box that had been in an accident and had a hole in the transfer case... so I got it even cheaper.

Just had to cut the side off it and weld it up.

Sounds like it would be cheaper to import an RB26 box from NZ than to buy local.

SR20 bellhousing WILL NOT fit RB26. The SR boxes start to have difficulty around 260rwkw, depending on how you drive.

RB25 boxes do fit on to S14, with modified tailshaft, shifter and differnet cross member (sr20 auto cross member from memory). Also, you may have to modify the tunnel slightly.

D1 garage would be able to provide the bits as they do full convedrsions, ie, rb gearbox to SR20.

Thanks for the info.

We can do all the mods and conversions ourselves. I was just wondering whether or not is would bolt straight up or if it required modding. We will settle with a RB25 box just wondering if it was worth running the SR for a bit but I don't think it will be worth it.

    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
