Snowman
Ahh... but the next question to be asked IF it is SBS will be "Archie - were you using Castrol Formula R 10-60W". They are now attributing a number of SBS cases to wrong choices of oils. Snowman
It's good. I had been told of no recorded cases of SBS by people using that particular oil. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/70651-winton-round-up/page/3/#findComment-1310070 Share on other sites
Ant97GTR
thats good 'cause I use it!!! It was recommended by Meridian M/sports before I went to PI (high cornering speeds = more SBS) and as long as I warm the car up and don't give it stick till its properly warmed up the bottom end will stay intact. Snowman
I happen to know that the car in question (Archies) had gone from using Castrol at Calder to using Fushs at Winton. If it is as expected a big end - what part the oils played in this is debatable. But until I see a GTR running overfilled Castrol oils do a big end I will not personally believe in SBS. LOL Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/70651-winton-round-up/page/3/#findComment-1310205 Share on other sites

LOL I'm using castrol 10-60 as well on recommendation by a mechanic who races in some class (i forget which). How much do you guys overfill the oil by for the track? Snowman
About 1 litre. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/70651-winton-round-up/page/3/#findComment-1310291 Share on other sites
Interloper
so the total oil you have in your sump is 5.5L? a GTS4 has a gtr sump and it says 4.5l is what it takes with a filter change, i usually put in an extra .5L making it close enough to 5L. Is that the same size for a R34 GTR? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/70651-winton-round-up/page/3/#findComment-1310300 Share on other sites
Snowman
I have about 6L cause I have an oil cooler / remote filter as well. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/70651-winton-round-up/page/3/#findComment-1310353 Share on other sites
ferni
I usually put 5L in i think the offical amount is 4.74L or something... the Oil cooler doesn't drain much through the sump, so theres probably a Litre or so left in when you drain the oil. Roy
Really...you think it would be as much as 1L? I use Dash 10 hose, so has an ID of about 12mm i suppose. The oil cooler itself doesnt hold much oil at all as the tubes in the core are very fine, the end tanks would probably hold about 200ml though...so maybe a total of 600-700ml for my 19row oil cooler. I only make the point in case there is an issue of running too high an oil level????? Al
Andrew sorry to say buddy, using Fuchs was not the reason for the failure, to even suggest one oil change could blow the engine is laughable. The motor had major concerns b4 Winton, that's why Archie left Calder so early, the thing was pinging off its head. Archie also knew the internals were questionable and was warned (and agreed) on how long the engine would last. Why do you think he was soooo calm at Winton, after the blew it? I have been using Fuchs for the last 3-4years and have never had any issues at any, track/fun day/drag/cruise/etc. I truly believe that this oil is just as good as the Castrol oil, but at the end of the day ppl make a judgement on what they know. Not having a go at you, Andrew, just stating that there are alot of contributing factors in this car's particular life and that no matter what oil was used it would have ended in the same unfortunate way.
