Hey guys'n'gals

well in my search for insurance companies who will insure a car whilst it's not registered, i was pointed in the direction of Shannon's. Everyone else just straight out said no, not until it's registered. Even Just Cars who will insure anything for the right price  altho must admit, Just Cars quote was quite resonable..

anyways, ring up. Get a really nice girl on the phone, knew her cars and then quoted me $1900 a year for non-registered insurance, or $2200 a year for when it's registered! But wait, there's more  - Pay by the month at NO EXTRA cost!! (unlike famous) And i was given rating 2 as well! Had 3rd party insurance in my name from about mid 2002.

I'm 21, and the car is a 1998 R34 GT-T.

I've yet to check out the modification situation, but i'm pretty sure i'll go with them as, most importantly, they have pay by the month. And cheaper than Just Cars, who were cheaper than Famous.

So yeah, for those who have called Shannon's just to get knocked back by the whole under 25 thing, give 'em a try again. According to the girl i spoke to, she said things have changed around there recently (too bad they haven't updated their online quote system which won't let you put in an age under 25).

Also means that if i get a temp rego from Vic roads, the car will be fully insured when i'm driving

nice work Shannon's :P

That's good to hear.

When I called about 2 months ago I got some old guy who was not only rude, but didn't want to hear about it.

"it's an import"

"looks shannons don't wana touch that sort of stuff we don't want em"

"but your website says we know your car and i'm an enthusiast"

"nah mate ... so what did you want again"

"(eat a dicK)"

I might have to try again - thanks for the info

I was insured with Shannons with my old car as it was a classic and I 'm 23 now. I would check the fine print if I were you. There were certain conditions that I was under when I was insured with them.

Limited Kilometers a year

My be stored in a locked garage at night

Alarm/immobiliser fitted by a company they recommend

I'm sure there were a few other ones.

Mods shouldn't be a problem provided you tell them what they are.

i insured my cefiro (turbo) with shannons for under 800 a year on their limited kms plan (from memory its 8000 a yr) I kept this insurance till right up to 8000 kms then i upgraded to an unlimited kms account for about 900 or so a year with no hassles.

if you get the right people there on the ph they will sort you out so swoit, i got a young guy who loved jap cars and ended up having a 40 min convo with him about his impending trip to jap to pick out a stagea... he gave me an excellent deal.

my car was fitted with a very good brant alarm / demobilisor and is parked in lockup garage overnight. I have has 1 at fault accident in past 3 years (yay for not being able to prove the dick i crashed into was hammering it round a blind corner).

I have also rang up a few times to list mods i have added and they have only upped the rate a little bit and this again depended on who you got on the ph. my tip is just avoid the old farts they always seem to want to push up every cost possible.

they even let me add wheels to the mods without upping the insurance. any more mods now and my rate will go up a bit but then its unlimited mods at no extra cost.

I rate shannons!

the last one about immobilizer is pretty standard with any insurance, the limited kms is a certain plan, there are unlimited ones, and they didn't require you to have a lockup, but i guess it might affect the fees if you did not have offstreet parking.

My experience - I've been with Shannon's since I was 19 and had a 10sec VL modded to the max. Regardless, I shop around every year for a quote and they are always the cheapest and they actually have plausible excesses. From what I've seen they don't care what car or mods you have or whether it is an import. Customer service has always been exemplory. And the older guys have been the ones who help the most. Must be some other reason why they knocked you back.

I have been insured with them for 1 year now, and their service has been excelent.

I have been hit twice in the past year and both times, all i had to do was inform them of the details and they took care of the rest.

I highly recomend them.

And if you ever get a rude prick like that again, ask for their name again, then ask to speak to their superior. I'm sure their attitude will change in one way or another...

VL sold locally. Skylines, not. Maybe that was the difference.

I meant the VL was a modded car and they had no problem insuring me under 25. I also have had a Skyline insured for 3 years now with them.

Cheers.

Yeah - bet you are happy I pointed you in their direction! hope this clarifies it to all those who said 'no way'.....

Yelp I am only new to skylines though my mates, i used to have Mazda SP20 now got R33 tried just cars and shannons, both the same price 987 but shannons offer me cheaper excess and also life time guaranteee on repairs where just cars only offer 3 years. I got some nice guys at shannons who i spoke to for a while about cars and stuff. I am happy with them. They just need you to have a 3 point imobaliser, when u get a no claim thingo 60% and keep it for 3 years they give it for life, where just cars u ahve to pay more to protect it

Shannons are a good insurer.

PLUS if u tell them ur a member of a car club (proof of membership needed) they will discount ur insurance..

I have done this with my other car and will do when i get my new car :)

i have been with for 2 years now and i have my other modified car insured with them... last year i saw the premium come down... :)

Interesting thread. It was only yesterday that I seen an ad on tv and thought i'd try and get an online quote from them to see what they were charging only to find that they don't like under 25's.

I'll give them a call later this arvo. Currently $1,800/yr with Famous which is fairly good I think.

That's good to hear.

Yeah this is was the same attitude I had last time as well, rude and a complate waste of time (wasting my time that is). Mayb the cranky man is gone. Guess I'd give them a go again when my insurance is up again.

SS8_Gohan: Last year it cost me $1515 with 2k access, and I was 24 with no accident history and I was on rating 1, this is with JC. The car was a 98 GTT with bodykit, 18s allow, pod filter and also cat back exhause. This is just to give you an idea on the quote I had with JC previously. :)

well i just called shannons and spoke to a great lady who knows what she is talking about Jo-Anne and she told me that anyone that sayz they dont insure anyone under 25 get there names and ask to speak to supervisor, because they do subject to certain guidelines that they have to follow, IE some cars need to be in locked up garages and to be classed as a motoring enthusists doesnt just mean u have to be a member of a car club. etc anywways i asked them to create some sort of guidelines so u can check if you would or would not be able to use them

hmmm well im on my L's insuring a 33 3rd party for $670 with just cars

for the 6 months i'll be insuring it for on 3rd party on my L's they said when i get my p's (6 months time) they will start me on rating 5 for comprehensive for $2900 with fill kit, suspension upgrades,$2k stereo $1800 wheels and a few other bits and pieces ... thats alot better then the $3700 quote i got for rating 6

so jsut by having insurance for 6 months in my name on my l's im saving $800 and getting my rating down faster then my mates

-Ruffels

allthough i didnt check with shannons or famous at the time :s ... probably should have

thats awsome!!

would they insuring R34GTR??if yes,any idea how much?

Yes they do , as for price it depends on lots of things like driver history , age , location , mods , security , how many k's you travel and they usualy only cover nominated drivers on the policy . They may ask you to install a tracker as well but i found their premium very low and low exces in my case .

    • OK, that is a helpful description, because that sounds exactly like a bleeding issue in the clutch....these are hard to bleed manually even when the damping loop has been removed. I'd suggest bleeding again....start by filling the master cylinder up and opening the bleed nipple. Come back and check every now and then that the master cylinder is not empty. Let it gravity bleed for a few hours and see if that improves
    • I replaced the whole clutch line with the chase bays braided hose, I think it removes that loop, is it the short hose that comes immediately off the slave or is there a drawing in the manual to find what you’re referring to? It was just re-bled when I upgraded to the nismo slave, old slave worked fine but I thought that might help, didn’t change a thing. It’s like the first half of the pedal is pushing air and then when it finally actuates the master the friction zone is tiny. Makes it practically impossible to launch the car
    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
