If the system is sealed then it can't "drain", that said I never mount an oil filter high up in the engine bay, ditto oil cooler they are always mounted as low as I can get them. :)

Why is that?

I was thinking about mounting mine in front of the battery in my R34.

Is there any difference between pointing the opening of the filter up or down? I thought maybe I'd mount it facing up so that I get no spillages when changing it.

I suppose I could mount the filter behind the oil cooler low down drivers side. I'd have to wind up the excess hose though.

Thanks.

no problem with mounting the oil filter on top of the relocation plate (ie hole facing down) providing it has an anti drain back valve (which most do). I think this way is easiest to get off without spillage. with the filter under the relocation plate when you screw it off oil is likely to drip from the relocation plate.

Richard has the answers to most of my questions it seems :D Thank you.

However; if I pull off the filter and the hole is facing down, wont all the oil in the filter sploosh straight out everywhere?

It would be easier to mop up a few drips (or more likely put a rag underneath first) than a big sploosh.

Also, I guess why I quoted Sydneykid above was that I wondered if the filter will not filter as well up high or perhaps it affects oil pressure.

oil, shouldn't sploosh out the filter as most decent oil filters have an anti drain back valve. by the same token I wouldn't hang around with it pointing down, you just unscrew, tip up and onto tray to slowly drain. think about it like this. if oil was going to come out of the filter, if would be slowly doing so whilst the engine is off, then when you take it off it should be fine.

onto the thing about height. I haven't read (or don't remember) those posts. but my guess is what he's saying is that if you have the filter or cooler mounted up above the height of the stock filter mount the pump will be working harder to get the oil up there. also when you are doing oil changes it will be harder to drain the cooler and lines.

I got it from a thread about spun bearings in RB26.

A bit does spill out from the normal side mounted position when you remove it but not heaps. I just put that down to being able to get it hole facing up fairly quickly.

Hmm, Maybe I should look into putting it in the guard there behind the oil cooler and transmision cooler, just to the left of the water cooler and the intercooler and airconditioning system cooler. Phew! What next? A diff oil cooler?

Ok I ended up mounting it behind the coolers in the front guard on it's side on a bracket I made from aluminium. That guard is officially full now.

The sucky thing was that the thread for the filter relocation thingie is not the same as the thread for the filter that goes with this car. Are there multiple thread types?

yep there sure are.

it's not neccisarily a bad thing. when i was getting bits for the GTI-R I was planning on getting a remote filter mount designed to take a Z9 filter which are huge and cheaper than the GTI-Rs Z442 filter.

with the GTR though my remote filter mount accepts a stock type filter.

Yeah that's exactly where I was going to mount it. Is the actual mounting point down low or somewhere on the front radiator support?

Have you changed your oil since it's been there? Did the oil come out everywhere?

Also, I notice your fuse box cover is worn away too. I scanned Shonens and made a new one which I'm going to get printed onto a sticker to stick over the top.

I'm also going to paint the cover white to match the car and I painted that battery cover white too. You have the same one as me. I was wondering if they were stock cos I haven't noticed anyone else with one.

Hi guys, on GTST's and GTT's I mount the oil filter on the RHS (lower) subframe, in the space that the front drive shaft goes through on the GTR's, GTS4's and Stageas. This means the oil filter is low and rear mounted for better centre of gravity and improved front/rear weight distribution. I mount the oil pressure and oil temperature sensors in the remote filter mount. By the time you add up the weight of the braided hoses, the sensors, the filter adaptor, the filter and the oil, it is worth doing.:)

Hi SK;

where do you recommend mounting the remote oil filter on an R32 GTR? the remote oil cooler goes under the drivers side guard from memory?

Thanks and Regards

The mount is next to where the battery sits. YEh we have, like 3 times already....no oil didnt come out everywhere....u just have to open the oil filter slowly and making sure that you have drained all the oil from the sump.

Yeh it was faded wen we got it....cant read it anyways..lol but i wouldnt mind do what you did...smart idea....im not sure if it that batttery cover was stock

cheers

Thanks Ronin,

any concerns with it getting holed under there?

My car is pretty low, and haven't had any issues so far.

When I've been at the track I've come off once or twice, and the gravel / ripple strips haven't done anything nasty so far... It is quite well tucked up such that if you did rip it off there would be some pretty devastating other damage anyway such as sump, lower arms of suspension etc.

hope that helps :P

On a GTR I prefer to still mount the filter as low as possible, so I use the space on the front sub frame next to where the intercooler pipe comes out. That way its a short run from the block to the filter and then to the oil cooler behind the RHS front vent.:P

The problem that I ahve found with teh oil cooler mounting positions is that when you finally go to flush out your old shitty oil to replace it with nice expensive Redline oil, you ahve to dump the oil cooler and line to get all of the oil out.. My line go up then bakc down to the oil cooler, so oil collect in the cooler.. I haven't yet his stage ont eh GTR, but I hit it with the 180.. I am just pedantic though...
