Hey ppl wats up?! This is 2 hear from all the skyline owners under 21 (or who had a Skyline when they were under 21) as i am 19 and am finding it a bitch 2 get insurance! The best quote i could get was $2500 and i dont even have a turbo! does this sound right? They really do make it hard 4 ppl 2 have a nice car!:D and there is no way im gonna swap it 4 a Lancer or Excel im willing 2 do watever it takes. So i jus wanna know where u all get your insurance and 4 how much?

Also do u guys reccomend getting insured under a parents name? Is there a downside 2 doing this and can it b done with an import?

Please help this young and frustrated Skyline fan!:)

No. If the insurance company find out they can deny your claim.

Do a search for "Insurance". Good Luck! :D

My best adbice I can give you is Get only third party property damage and drive safely and enjoy your car and install Quic trac.

Its only 300 bucks a year to monitor for you.

Best ideal way for you. trust me.

The money yuou can save instead of having comprehensive can be saved for a rainy day repairs if you do get into an accident.

Its like yor own insurance.

Good luck my friend.

$2500 is cheap, Famous Insurance quoted me $3600 for a `96 non-turbo and I am 18, but 0% NCB as I havent had a full year of insurance yet.

I don't think I would even bother with a non-turbo as the price difference in terms of insurance is quite neglegable, that's why I am going the GTiR path.

$2500 on a $25000+ car is pretty cheap for a Yound Driver, with low NCB, sports/performance car that is an import etc. It's not the insurance companies making it hard, its all the drivers crashing them and not taking adequate security measures to stop them being stolen that forces the prices up.

My premium is about $500 on a $6,000 R31 Skyline - so as you can see, I still manage to pay about 10% of the car value etc.

As for only having Third Party Property - that is a big call to make - I know I certainly wouldn't do it unless I could afford to just replace my car if something ever happened to it. There are lots of examples I could give where you have no claim against anyone to repair / replace your car if it was damaged or stolen if you have no insurance.

My preference for a tracker is Navtrak - They cost from $1950 which covers your first year monitoring and installation.

I currently have a Quik Trak, but will be pulling that out soon and fitting a Navtrak as they offer greater coverage.

Remember in a way you are probably driving a $20,000 car afterall, no matter what the performance aspect, it generally still costs you around $1000 to insure any car of around that value. That is just the costs they charge to replace it...or the 20 skylines they have to insure to pay for a fully written off one, or stolen one.

I'm 26, rating 1 and I still will be paying $2030 to insure my modified R33. So even as you get older, and have a good driving record you still will pay a fair amount. This is I guess the price you pay for having some unique and not just another common-dore.

If you can't afford it, well, yeah, maybe wait a few years...because well you do want some years of driving behind you before you get into something it is really a high performance car only a few steps down from a porshe, ferrari or the like. There are many things I am glad I learned in crappier cars, and i had the dents to prove it!

Hey $2500 for a skyline is not too bad. Ive got a friend who 'inherited' a 2000 Mazda 323, just to be stuck with an insurance premium of $2500! For a 21 year old chick!

Does anyone know where to get more info on NAV track? How much does it cost for monitoring? If i was getting a tracking device i wouldnt get Quiktrak as it only has a limited range, unlike turbotrack and (i think) NAvtrack - they work anywhere as they use GPS.

    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
    • This came quicker than I thought. It ain't even 2025 yet.
    • I somehow quoted my post instead of editing it. I regret nothing.
