Just received delivery of a pretty heavily modded R32 GTR, and was wondering how much harrassment these get from the local police in Vic. By harassment I mean getting pulled over by police when driving normally (ie not doing anything stupid or being a hoon etc).

The car is black and currently has a rollcage, three dash mounted gauges, no back seat, and black 18s. The wheels are to be changed (they're 12" wide!) and the front half of the cage removed for compliance. I'm thinking of removing the rear half as well if that makes a difference (do rollcage bars attract attention?) as well as possibly putting a standard looking tip on the end. I just want to enjoy this car without worrying about constantly being targetting by police.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

It would be a shame to remove all of that stuff, espicially living in vic where there are many quality tracks to put them to good use. If the car makes a lot of noise then that will grab some attention. It all comes down to where you live and what the local tmu guys are like.

driving a gtr though you dont have too much of a choice when it comes to being targeted, if not by the police then by a car load of fully sick guys going "does it do good burnouts uleh".

LOL true your screwed unfortunately. i still believe its how you drive though, i take it this wont be your daily, so just be carefull of where you drive eg. known areas for hangers. DONT GO TO KNOX. since your car is black go out at night and if you see a cop park in a shadow.

That's pretty much that's what I figured. I'll be quietening it down a fair bit with some exhaust additions and an inaudible plumb-back, etc. Will definitely be avoiding places like knox, chappel st, etc. It won't be a daily driver - got a little CRX for that which is pretty much invisible on the roads.

I got defected a few weeks back in my GTST- Driving normally (actually waiting at a red light) middle of the day in a suit and tie!

I've had the R32 for 4 months and been pulled over 3 times (only once they had a decent reason because I did an illegal right hand turn)

I'm not even a dodgy looking bloke (I think anyway) and twice I have been in a suit and tie as I'm an accountant for Maccas which means I drive around to all the stores in Melbourne during the day.

hey jim bob, iam in a similar situation, i dont think the roll cage in ur car is a problem. i have a half cage inmy car and all u need to do is pad it up, just incase u were in a accident and someone is the passenger u r covered, the cops cant say anything to that, and it would be good if u had a engineers cerificate to. hope u enjoy ur car.

knox isnt that bad.. i stayed there for 2 weeks never got pulled over once.. never got pulled over at all in melb. only once n that was going down sky high just a licence check..only thing the cop said to me was to change my tyres cos they were getting on the bald side lol

WOW !!! NICE, just don't drive into HOT SPOTs, drive and behave like us SAU VIC. Only drag when you got to drag meet and speed when you go on track.

Dont' know about CAGE as i'm pretty sure they are not legal, register it as a two seater and no back seat should be fine.

I think the cage will attract attention even if it is legal..

What do you think when you first see a cage in a car?

I think that it must be built for speed/performance... dont know about the rest of you?

Sounds like a nice car.

Just try and make it look as stock and tame as possible (big task on a r32 GTR).

Good luck :P

Greg

But wouldn't a visible rollcage (even if it is legal) raise attention from police driving by and cause them to check out the car?

Get rid of it. they'll just pull you over and hassle you about it.

you will soon learn that they will look for any excuse like "i suspect that this car may be unroadworthy" to pull you over. so get rid of everthing obvious.

i even painted my exhaust black, cause i thought they might not like a shiny 5inch tip on the supper dragger.

If your exhaust is too loud, fix it. if its hangs too low (like on mine), fix it.

unless the cage is engineered or put in according to ADR specs, it is illegal. It is illegal to remove the rear seats unless it is registered/complied as a 2 seater. There was a thread relating to the use of the roll cage in a daily driven car. You can have the front half as long as it is mm perfect with the guidelines outlined by VicRoads. You will need to keep the front visors if you keep the front half of the cage. I bought a full cage but i am unsure when i will install it as i dont think its a good idea to use on the roads. Bottom line, after previously owning 2 cars with roll cages, you WILL get harrassed by the police purely based on the assumption that because it has a roll cage, it will be highly modified.

Dont have the car too low (100mm is the legal height)

Dont have a BOV noise (ie venting to atmosphere)

Dont have a shiny engine bay (Piping, cam covers ect, Paint everything Black)

Dont have different coloured hoses, use black ones.

Make sure you have something covering the pod(s)

Paint your cooler black

Dont have a loud exhaust

Dont drive like a farkwit.

Dont have gauges on the a-pillar or obstructing your vision.

Make sure you dont have tyres/wheel sizes more than one inch bigger than what is stated on your tyre placard.

Basically dont give them a reason to 'think' your car is modified. Of course that all goes out the window if you have a dirty great big lump of metal hanging off one side :D

forgot to add, make sure you have some form of padding on the steering wheel. I even think some guy now driving a red russian 4wd even strapped a pillow (or something similar) to the steering wheel to pass an inspection.

And a H Pattern on your gear knob. Got to know where the gears are apparently

:P

hey man,

i'm going to be in the same boat, as i'm getting a r32 gtr with a r33 n1 spec motor in it, along with a list of mods... but the car has got stock gtr wheels on it and the cooler is black, no roll cage, pods are covered, not sure bout zorst yet.

The roll cage might not attract as much attention as you think. My friend drives a bright red integra type r with 19" wheels, lotsa stickers, loud exhaust, has a red roll cage with red padding wrapped around it. He drives to chapel st, st kilda, etc, quite regularly and never gets bothered about the roll cage. Of course, he gets hassled because of the height of the car and the wheels, but never any questions about the cage.

I drove my red R34 GTT for 6 months with a zorst & pod on it, and never got pulled over once. I know it's a different car compared to a 32, but still, cops never hassled me in it at all

Just my .2
