I'm doing a fuel pump upgrade for my R32 GTR, and I want to know the diff between an internal an external pump

I've seen plenty of threads on the Bosch 044 externals - but my mechanic is recommending a Bosch internal (not sure on model), but he says it will flow to 600hp (which is fine for my requirements)

Is the internal an easier upgrade – he talking ~$150 to fit it for me ?

Are externals better/stronger/faster

how difficult is the fitting – could I do it myself (anyone have a how to guide)

I would highly recommend you look at a jap drop in replacement rather than modifying a bosch pump to fit.

As an overview

Bosch pump (I fitted a 044 internally)

- initail cost $400

- hose tail connector, banjo fitting and fuel hose, $80

- a several hours farking around to fit the damn thing, mod bracket etc - it also fouled on the fuel tank making it tricky to get in place.

- result, noisey pump (not too bad but noisey) and it had a tendancy to surge at lower fuel levels, ie less than 1/4 tank

Tomei intank pump

- Intial cost around $550 (you may be able to find cheaper, esp if you import yourself from greenline or nengun)

- I had it tested, flowed 260L/hour at 3 bar, better than the bosch,

- direct fit, no modding

- about 30 mins to fit

- doesnt surge

- quieter than the stock GTR fuel pump it replaced. At first I thought the pump wasnt working it was so quiet.

Just my opinion, having tried both ways. Much happier with the tomei.

Personally I'd got the external bosch 044.

Bought mine from Drift King for 366 dollars including COD. I think they are cheaper now.

I did the 044 internal into my r33 gtst - a total pain in the arse job - but external would be very easy. If going internal make sure you include the 1 way valve.

I have a friend who's a tuner - he's done heaps of external bosch's - just use the standard pump as a lift pump and the bosch for the booster.

I don't understand the fuel smell thing when going external.

IF YOU HAVE A FUEL SMELL YOU HAVE A FUEL LEAK.

I can't see how a sealed fuel pump will have a fuel smell. Very strange.

Just my 20 cents worth

Cheers!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it also comes down to the types of lines you run - I got th e blue Aeroquip ones with a surge tank & I do get a fuel smell, I have checked all fittings and no leaks anywhere however if you smell the hoses they stink of fuel, apparently some lines "sweat" whereas some don't. I've been told that if you do not want any smell use solid lines in the boot.

some of the prices here seem a little inflated and ive read time and time again that if bosch pumps are installed correctly they arent any (or much at all) louder and or surgey (i dont think thats a word!!)

ROFLMAO,

why is it that people 'read' this and then think they can naysay someone who has DONE the bloody job.

You may 'read', but show me someone who has done and doesnt get surge. I TOO have read, but I also KNOW people who have had this install done, and with similar results - there is so much disinformation on these forums from people that dont have a clue, or know someone who knows someone or READ somewhere. Its all bloody heresay until you have DONE it..

Let me give you a tip here, if you havent done a job, and have read about it, but someone has done the job - ask questions, consider that perhaps they do know more than you because they have done the job, its a source of first hand information - you might learn something instead of listening to all the keyboard cowboys who parrot others without actually having completed the job themselves.

You talk of 'bosch pumps', which bloody bosch pumps, they make a few. If you are talking about the 044, then say that, but then again, you probably arent sure as you only read, and dont remeber the details.

thanks Steve

I hear you

I will be ordering the tomei pump from Nengun (as soon as he lists it - today !!!)

(I have other Tomei stuff - so it's a safe bet for me)

can I fit the pump without a re-tune - I have a PCF - but would like to fit the pump myself

Awesome price, I was going off local price, its very easy to fit, shouldnt need a retune as the fuel pressure reg takes care of rail pressure. Having said that, some people have reported the car running richer after a fuel pump upgrade, presumably because of increased flow - might be worth putting the car on a dyno to check.

You would certainly notice any major difference once you start driving if this is the case though. Whether or not there is a change to mixtures, it would only be richer, so nothing too scary.

Don't know anything about hoses sweating - I only use EFI grade fuel hoses - same stuff they use from the factory.

I don't like the idea of hoses which 'sweat' petrol.

Neither did I until after I had them fitted however a couple of workshops have said the same thing that they will give a slight fuel smell (wouldn't be able to ignite anything), this is why you see some surge/pump kits enschrouded in perspex cases to stop the smell. The hose is fuel rated at 250psi with a 1000 psi burst rating which is fine. Still, I'm stuffed if I know why they should give off any smell!?
