Yeah it did fail all but 2 years later after having its arse raced off it, after we stripped the engine down it was dead stock so imo it done pretty well running consistant 11's in full street trim and pushing 300+rwkw for that long

What times/power do you run?

wow on std internals that is doing well soppose you can't ask much more . Since the Bel tune the car has only been on a dyno once and a full power run wasn't done 2wd dyno dynamics in shootout mode I have a print out here for 275rwkw by 4500rpms 1.2bar boost think of that what you will but I haven't taken that figure seriously.

Out at WSID last year on a 30deg evening with a slipping clutch (excuses excuses I know lol ) went 11.9@115mph with a 1.9 60ft . Going back out again soon with a set of aftermarket dumps a twin plate and maybe 1.3bar hopefully can trap 120mph if so I'll be happy cause in my opinion thats fast enough for a car that is driven to and from the track in full street trim , famous last words I know .

hahaha good point, this thread is really going nowhere now all I can speak of is my experience and my experience was that BEL lost power for me and the whole experience left me feeling sick as I lost all but $1000 with the cost of the tunes and the loss on selling the power fc

If the same happened to you would you still be singing them praise?

what about the way the car is driven on the road tune, what governs the thrash factor? I would be really nervous about someone going full tilt in my GTR without knowing them personally? does anyone here drive the car for the road tune with BEL? or do you just leave the car in the lap of the gods and pray it comes back with tyres clutch and engine :rofl:

You could drive if you wanted to...but personally, I wouldn't want to. Most of the tuning they do is around the spool up point, they only really need to do a couple of runs throught the full rev range.

If your clutch was fine before the tune, it will be fine after the tune, they don't need to go through the gears hard. Although, if your clutch is marginal to start with, don't be surprised if it starts slipping becasue the car makes more power (my old STI did this during the tune)

If you're that worried, speak to Ben about going down to Wakefield for a trackday with them and get him to tune it around wakefield.

Being a person who for the second time/second car has gone through the whole tuning thing recently.To me a good tune gives good economy, good throttle response, good reliability and good power. Power last, as it seems the tune can quickly kill an engine, and ill hapily sacrifice some power for reliability.

I had my car tuned, was pretty happy with how it drove, the power it made and the fuel economy was ok. Dropped boost back from 18psi to 8psi and the car was a dog. Originally at a lowly 8psi it still had some mustard, so engine was only making power because of boost, nothing to do with ignition and fuelling etc etc

So off for a retune after a few mods. The result is better fuel economy, better throttle response, though that could be attributed to one of the mods undertaken, and it made more power everywhere. That was with a smalller A/R housing, so would expect it to make more mid-low end power. But it also made more pwer after 5,000rpm all the way to redline, again making somewhere between 20-30rwkws at red line:)

And the real test, 36 degree C day at Sandown with plenty of full throttle straights, and not a hint of detonation, car ran real strong, even with water temps up around the 103 deg C.

Dont know CRD, so take my next comments with a grain of salt...i will only ever get my cars tuned from this day onwards by ppl that actually do club circuit cars. They have had to learn how to tune to live with sustained high loads and temps, throttle response for good driveability, and we all want power. My experience with my old R31 was expert tuners that get their name from drag racing didnt do that great a job with my car. I took Quicfit in Hornsby to get my car to sing.

Same deal recently, workshop has tuned some big hp dyno and drag cars and thought i was pretty happy with it. Got the car re-tuned by a place that does club circuit cars and all is good, 6 forms of motorsport in 8 weekends and engine/tune didnt miss a beat, and lol, even water temps on the freeway are 3-4 deg C cooler:)

Yes you are correct I certainly wouldn't but from personal experience they turned my car into a new one and thats all I can go off I soppose . With the wonders of the internet and performance car forums like these opinons are like ass holes everyone has got one and I've heard good and bad experiences about every shop mentioned in this thread .

At the end of the day I soppose I'm just another ass hole with an opinion and a good story to tell :rofl:

As BU5TER said, you need to get a car tuned by a number of tuners before you can compare. I guess I was intially asking if anyone out there had the same car tuned at different shops for a better comparison.  

It sounds as though both CRD and BEL get a good wrap but money is a big factor here.

Also, I don't like the road tune...it's too unsafe...Especially at the speeds reached by these cars.

Butthead on these forums had his car tuned by CRD and wasn't happy, so he went to Bel. He is pretty impressed, drop him a PM if you like (although I belive he is very busy these days).

Not a GTR I know, but the owner of the 2.5L sti I refered to above is keen to have Bel retune his car. The owner is a freind of a friend, so if I hear anything, I'll let you know.

Ill be going through this very soon.

32 GTR, 2530s, Poncams, Tomei cam Gears, Dumps and all the fruit. Me like most of the people here want a steet tune with response, good reliability etc.. As Roy said I would much rather have a good reliable, responsive car than a Dyno queen.

I have a number of options, BEL, CRD and a few others.. Its going to be a hard choice

but in the end, there's no such thing as a perfect tune, it's not rocket sience, all you can do is change AFR, timing and boost until you get the result you desire.

Good post, Roy. Many valid points there. What ECU do you have and what is your opinion/experience with Quickfit as they are one of the workshops that I am also considering using to tune an Autronic ECU?

For your information bel don't run around homebush , silverwater and lidcombe .

They go on the M4 and drive all the way to the lower blue mountains and back and yes they run it in 4th gear all the way to the redline ( 230kmh +)

So who takes responsibility if the police pull over BEL when doing this (if they can catch the car :))? Speed trials will see the car impounded if caught. I could never sanction this as it is outright dangerous. Low end street tuning and cruise setting would be fine, but high speed runs such as this are insane.

Also when i had dropped off a s13 sr20det to be pfc/boost controller tuned and injectors installed.....(just over $600 was paid for that, which is good) the odometer did not represent a street tune which included a drive to the moutains on the m4. if my memory serves me right it only clocked ~15-25kms.

I don't know about your car but i can assure you they go all the way to lower mountains and will use at least half a tank of fuel .

IMHO..........I dont really care what tuner you choose as long as no dolphins are harmed in the process. :elaugh:

Also, CRD are expensive?? I hear this all the time! Compared to who? Jim is one of the top tuners in the country, I'm prepared to pay him for his time. We have always had great results. Cant get a prefect tune? I'd say Jims done it with Twoogle.

CRD might seem expensive by comparison to the prices mentioned here by the other tuners but its a case of you get what you pay for.

I agree with two.06l and I think Jim is a top tuner...I mean the cars he has tuned for me have run very smoothly with good engine response.

I didn't say you can't get a perfect tune, I said there's no such thing as a perfect tune. Perfect for what purpose? Perfect in what way? There is always a compromise. You can always push it a little harder and make a bit more power and the expense of reliability.

Also depends what you want the car for. Street driving, drag racing, circuit racing etc.

    • Now that the break-in period for both clutch and transmission is nearly over I'd like to give some tips before I forget about everything that happened, also for anyone searching up how to do this job in the future: You will need at least 6 ton jack stands at full extension. I would go as far as to say maybe consider 12 ton jack stands because the height of the transmission + the Harbor Freight hydraulic platform-style transmission jack was enough that it was an absolute PITA getting the transmission out from under the car and back in. The top edge of the bellhousing wants to contact the subframe and oil pan and if you're doing this on the floor forget about trying to lift this transmission off the ground and onto a transmission jack from under the car. Also do not try to use a scissor jack transmission lift. You have to rotate the damn thing in-place on the transmission jack which is hard enough with an adjustable platform and a transmission cradle that will mostly keep the transmission from rolling off the jack but on a scissor lift with a tiny non-adjustable platform? Forget it. Use penetrating oil on the driveshaft bolts. I highly recommend getting a thin 6 point combination (box end + open end) wrench for both the rear driveshaft and front driveshaft and a wrench extension. These bolts are on tight with very little space to work with and those two things together made a massive difference. Even a high torque impact wrench is just the wrong tool for the job here and didn't do what I needed it to do. If your starter bolts aren't seized in place for whatever reason you can in fact snake in a 3/8 inch ratchet + 6 point standard chrome socket up in there and "just" remove the bolts for the starter. Or at least I could. It is entirely by feel, you can barely fit it in, you can barely turn the stupid ratchet, but it is possible. Pull the front pipe/downpipe before you attempt to remove the transmission. In theory you don't have to, in practice just do it.  When pulling the transmission on the way out you don't have to undo all the bolts holding the rear driveshaft to the chassis like the center support bearing and the rear tunnel reinforcement bar but putting the transmission back in I highly recommend doing this because it will let you raise the transmission without constantly dealing with the driveshaft interfering in one way or another. I undid the bottom of the engine mount but I honestly don't know that it helped anything. If you do this make sure you put a towel on the back of the valve cover to keep the engine from smashing all the pipes on the firewall. Once the transmission has been pulled back far enough to clear the dowels you need to twist it in place clockwise if you're sitting behind the transmission. This will rotate the starter down towards the ground. The starter bump seems like it might clear if you twist the transmission the other way but it definitely won't. I have scraped the shit out of my transmission tunnel trying so learn from my mistake. You will need a center punch and an appropriate size drill bit and screw to pull the rear main seal. Then use vice grips and preferably a slide hammer attachment for those vice grips to yank the seal out. Do not let the drill or screw contact any part of the crank and clean the engine carefully after removing the seal to avoid getting metal fragments into the engine. I used a Slide Hammer and Bearing Puller Set, 5 Piece from Harbor Freight to pull the old pilot bearing. The "wet paper towel" trick sucked and just got dirty clutch water everywhere. Buy the tool or borrow it from a friend and save yourself the pain. It comes right out. Mine was very worn compared to the new one and it was starting to show cracks. Soak it in engine oil for a day in case yours has lost all of the oil to the plastic bag it comes in. You may be tempted to get the Nismo aftermarket pilot bearing but local mechanics have told me that they fail prematurely and if they do fail they do far more damage than a failed OEM pilot bushing. I mentioned this before but the Super Coppermix Twin clutch friction disks are in fact directional. The subtle coning of the fingers in both cases should be facing towards the center of the hub. So the coning on the rearmost disk closest to the pressure plate should go towards the engine, and the one closest to the flywheel should be flipped the other way. Otherwise when you torque down the pressure plate it will be warped and if you attempt to drive it like this it will make a very nasty grinding noise. Also, there is in fact an orientation to the washers for the pressure plate if you don't want to damage the anodizing. Rounded side of the washer faces the pressure plate. The flat side faces the bolt head. Pulling the transmission from the transfer case you need to be extremely careful with the shift cover plate. This part is discontinued. Try your best to avoid damaging the mating surfaces or breaking the pry points. I used a dead blow rubber hammer after removing the bolts to smack it sideways to slide it off the RTV the previous mechanic applied. I recommend using gasket dressing on the OEM paper gasket to try and keep the ATF from leaking out of that surface which seems to be a perpetual problem. Undoing the shifter rod end is an absolute PITA. Get a set of roll pin punches. Those are mandatory for this. Also I strongly, strongly recommend getting a palm nailer that will fit your roll pin punch. Also, put a clean (emphasis on clean) towel wrapped around the back end of the roll pin to keep it from shooting into the transfer case so you can spend a good hour or two with a magnet on a stick getting it out. Do not damage the shifter rod end either because those are discontinued as well. Do not use aftermarket flywheel bolts. Or if you do, make sure they are exactly the same dimensions as OEM before you go to install them. I have seen people mention that they got the wrong bolts and it meant having to do the job again. High torque impact wrench makes removal easy. I used some combination of a pry bar and flathead screwdriver to keep the flywheel from turning but consider just buying a proper flywheel lock instead. Just buy the OS Giken clutch alignment tool from RHDJapan. I hated the plastic alignment tool and you will never be confident this thing will work as intended. Don't forget to install the Nismo provided clutch fork boot. Otherwise it will make unearthly noises when you press the clutch pedal as it says on the little installation sheet in Japanese. Also, on both initial disassembly and assembly you must follow torque sequence for the pressure plate bolts. For some reason the Nismo directions tell you to put in the smaller 3 bolts last. I would not do this. Fully insert and thread those bolts to the end first, then tighten the other larger pressure plate bolts according to torque sequence. Then at the end you can also torque these 3 smaller bolts. Doing it the other way can cause these bolts to bind and the whole thing won't fit as it should. Hope this helps someone out there.
