Just got my GTR a few days ago.

Been going really well for a few hundred kms.

Tonight, while in some traffic so I was on the clutch alot, I heard this disgusting winding/screeching noise as I came of the clutch to accelerate. I noticed this a fair few more times. Also as I was slowing into corners and shifting down, with clutch right in, just shifting was making the drive train engage such noises...

Could it have something to do with the clutch? or the gearbox?

I'm very nervous at this point.... HELP

I'm thinking you may have burned out the clutch because you've been riding it too much.

I have heard quite a few people comment how most gtr's burn out the clutch pretty quickly because people make the mistake of riding the clutch and relying on a bit of slippage.

Hey thanx for the speedy reply :D

I was fearing it may have been the case... although there doesn't seem to be any slip. Also from other cars I have burnt the clutch out in, they don't make such a crazy spinning noise, they simply rev alot and go no where... Is there something in this? or do GTR's act differently in this way?

Say it is the clutch? where and how much for new one?

its not the clutch

is the clutch bearing (or thrust bearing??)

Im having the exact same issue today. Was giving it a bit last night, and today the clutch makes that screeching noise. Its to do with the bearing, which is apparently a $20-30 part from nissan, but you need to take out the whole gearbox to fix it, which is alone, $2-300.

Its a matter of, either live with it, or fork out the $2-300, or fork out $800 for a new fitted clutch. Choice is yours.

I personally would like to know what causes this bearing to Fcuk up

Thrust bearing went on my supra. Was told that its got nothing to do with driving hard, its just a bearing, sometimes they go, but its just a noise so don't worry a great deal...

Also, I was told when the thrust bearing goes, putting your foot on the clutch shuts up that noise all together, because there is pressure on the bearing so its stops making the noise, which is exactly how the supra acted and the opposite to how this is acting.

The difference is, when that happened, the noise was always there, this has stopped again this morning... I would be happy to know it is just the thrust bearing though, cause then it would be a $20 - $30 fix + a few hours on the weekend... I'm just a little concerned it has something to do with some other drivetrain components, when my mate had a listen the other night, he said it seemed to be coming from further back... he may have been mistaken though, doesn't know much about cars, he thinks skylines are lines in the sky....

So you think it would be some sort of bearing? not syncro type stuff at all? It just concerns me that it makes it sometimes when I am actually shifting the stick with foot flat on clutch...

then again

I guess its probably all of the above with this car hey...

Ok, my source for all car info, who always seems to be right... said GearBOX.... oh no!

So does that sound right to some GTR owners who have had gearboxes die in the past? A yukkie howling noise?

If that is the case, I am looking into some PAR straight cut gears as replacement, say they are good up to 750hp, which I will never have. Any recommendations for where to go and what to get for gearbox work?

    • Price seems pretty good to me. Also seems a hell of a lot cheaper then buying another vehicle that only ever gets used for towing.  I'm a long way from you mate, I'm a couple of hours out of Brizzy.

    • The sodium acetate, mixed with citric acid, doesn't actually buffer each other. Interestingly though, if you used Sodium Acetate, and acetic acid, THAT becomes a buffer solution. Additionally, a weak acid that can attack a metal, is still a weak acid that can attack a metal. If you don't neutralise it, and wash it off, it's going to be able to keep attacking. It works the same way when battery acid dries, get that stuff somewhere, and then it gets wet, and off it goes again breaking things down. There's a reason why people prefer a weak acid, and it's because they want TIME to be able to be on their side. IE, DIY guys are happy to leave some mild steel in vinegar for 24 hours to get mill scale off. However, if you want to do it chemically in industry, you grab the muriatic acid. If you want to do it quicker at home, go for the acetic acid if you don't want muriatic around. At the end of the day, look at the above thumbnail, as it proves what I said in the earlier post, you can clean that fuel tank up all you want with the solution, but the rust that has now been removed was once the metal of the fuel tank. So how thin in spots is your fuel tank getting? If the magazine on the left, is the actual same magazine as on the right, you'll notice it even introduces more holes... Well, rust removal in general actually does that. The fuel tank isn't very thick. So, I'll state again, look to replace the tank, replace the fuel hanger, and pump, work out how the rust and shit is making it past the fuel filter, and getting into the injectors. That is the real problem. If the fuel filter were doing its job, the injectors wouldn't be blocked.
    • Despite having minimal clothing because of the hot weather right now, I did have rubber gloves and safety glasses on just in-case for most of the time. Yes, I was scrubbing with my gloves on before, but brushing with a brush removes the remaining rust. To neutralize, I was thinking distilled water and baking soda, or do you think that would be overkill?
