Remember you have to right next to the exchange to get the 24MBPS. otherwise find out you exchange and then u can graph what speed wyou are going to get. also remember u need to buy and ADSL2 compatible modem.

Internode are by far the best ISP in Australia.

Cable is great when no one in your area uses it and ur right next to the exchange.

Ah yes I think the Internode's 24mbps ADSL2+ is also very interesting.., extremely higher speed than the common ADSL.. I hope ur area could get it faster.., or maybe just connect to another Internode plan while waiting, and upgrade the plan when it's available, altough there must be some fees, and u must use a different modem.. but considering this is a different network system, I'm personally still unsure whether it can be upgraded or not.. Anyway, you should consider this one as well..

256k = 26k/s

512k = 55k/s

1500k = 165k/s

Ping times are better (which is what matters) so yes 1500k would be more ideal for gaming than 512k especially with the upload speeds (128k vs 256k) which is what slows down your connection when gaming.

that would be great to dl games/movies everyday but aint atm all day which would mean that i would not require that much of a dl cap, i'd say 15 - 20 gb would be plenty. Ill try 1.5mb and so how fast it is then upgrade if i need more speed or avaliable which means that the $60 plan i think it is would be more than enough for now.

I am with Bigponds cable network, and I am yet to see anyone else get the same speed as I do (in their homes). I am very happy with the service and reliability of BP Cable (but I do realise they weren't always that good in the past)

Ben, I admit I dont know much about internodes 24MBit, but until they deliver it into my street I wouldnt pick them as an ISP because in my experience "the next 2-3mths" often ends up beeing 12-24mths. That said I will look at it when its offered.

ATM its cable for me.

Ditto.

I've been using Bigpond Cable for the past 20 months and have also been delighted with the blistering performance. Friend has recently moved to a 1.5/256 ADSL connection through TPG and although it's as quick as any other connection I've come across, it's not a patch on Cable.

If you want service, reliability and performance, go Internode ADSL. It's not the cheapest around, but I wouldn't bother compromising my quality of service for the sake of a few bucks. I also happen to be an authorised reseller of Internode's services and can vouch for their "real world" support and performance.

A key differentiator for Bigpond Cable is the fact that you cannot get a fixed IP address. If you're running a web or mail server, you will have to use a separate Dynamic DNS service provider.

Also Telstra will not support your connection if it is managed by a hardware Firewall/Router. They will want you to bypass everything and revert back to the Bigpond "Hearbeat" Client. Telstra's cable service still uses the old technology "heartbeat" system which can cause considerable grief with Routers that cannot handle this method of connection properly (disconnects and cannot reconnect without a hard reset). If service and support are important to you, I urge you to stay away from Bigpond.

In reality, ADSL2 will return performance equivalent to or slightly better than Cable, ADSL2+ faster again. Both use better, more advanced technology which provides features that Cable simply can't provide.

But please be aware that ADSL2 and ADSL2+ only quote "up to" speeds, NOT guaranteed connection speeds. The fact is, further you are from the DSLAM, the slower your maximum speed will be. For example, the maximum speed achievable on ADSL2+ is effectively HALVED by the time you are only 1Km away from the DSLAM. As long as you live within 500m of the Exchange, your connection will be the envy of all mankind!! ;o)

At the end of the day,

1/ Don't scab out on your Internet

2/ Go for a provider that supports CHURN (if you still want the convenience of choice)

3/ If you can't commit to a lengthy contract, go with ADSL (Cable is usually 18-24mth contract if you want a reasonable connection fee).

Have fun.....

For example, the maximum speed achievable on ADSL2+ is effectively HALVED by the time you are only 1Km away from the DSLAM.
Not quite true. The maximum speed of ADSL2+ is 24MBit and speeds of 18.7MBit have been reported from ~2.2km (obviously though this is 1 example and it's more of a case-by-case basis due to the different copper networks around Australia).

Before joining up I did a little research.

I chose Internode and have been with them for the last year.

Excellent ISP, not a single complaint.

Unlike TPG, Bigpond & E-Access that my oldies were connected to, they are now on Internode and strange enough the email problems, occasional web browsing speed problems and jerky Uni lecture streaming play backs have dissapeared. :)

That being said at this very moment in time Cable still has the upper hand for downloading. Uploading is another story. ADSL has faster speeds for uploading.
