Got a vibration in car at momment (car just imported- rb20det ceffy), originally thought it was wheel alignment. But just yesterday, realised that the vibration also occurs while car is reved in neutral while stationary mostly around 3,000 revs. This although disapears when the clutch is pushed in.

My mechanically minded mates believe it is either the front of the gearbox (selector gears) or most likely the spigot bearing. The car has had a auto to manual conversion in its past before i got the car so we believe it is most likely an auto spigot bearing causing the input shaft to vibrate all over the joint as the spigot bearing is wrong size.

Does this sound correct? or what else could it be? We will be taking gearbox off next weekend to have a look but any other suggestions or help would be much appreaciated. Gearbox feels fine now when changing etc, so hopefully shouldn't be damaged??

auto spigot bearing?? i don't know about rb20's but I know that the RB30 auto doean't have one as there is a big flex plate in the way and no input shaft going into the block....if it is a conversion then there is a chance that that there is no spigot bush at all, I just did a conversion in my car and had to install one(bloody kunt of a thing, split one trying to get it in and rooted the 2nd one, but used it anyway and it seem so to be working for the time being). If there isn't one then that is bad news.

rb30 auto does have one...well the one that went in my car did. Had to change the auto for the manual one after realizing we didnt change it. Packed the end of the crank with grease and used a 14mm socket from memory to pop the old one out then tapped the new one in....

Oh yer...the wrong spiggot bush just made a grinding metal sound through each gear, not at any particular rev either...

just stumbled accross this old thread i started awhile ago. anyhow the problem in the end was a stuffed gearbox. replaced it and the problem has now gone. one day when i get some time i'll pull the old box appart to see what went wrong and see if i can get it fixed up as a spare.
