Hmmm, tough question.

If both engines are STOCK:

The RB20DET will be much more efficient then that of the SR20DET. Apart from more torque. the engines made for a slightly heavier car.

HOWEVER,

If you are serious about modifying the engine. The SR20 will be much cheaper to as parts are more widespread and at the same time there are less cylinders. The SR20 is much more stable at higher powers than the RB20.

I'm no mechanic, but thats how I would be considering it.

If it were me, the choice would be between an SR20DET and an RB25DET. Converting an SR (or even a CA) 180 to an RB isn't worth it, IMO, if you just go with the RB20. Nice engine, but the costs incurred would've been better spent either modifying the SR (or making the diff between a CA and SR 180) or spending that bit extra and going the full hog with an RB25 (or RB30!).

The RB20 actually has less torque than the SR20det.

There's something about the low down torque that makes the sr20 more enjoyable (imo). When driving my flatmates r32 I find I have to push it always, mine I can drive under 4000rpm and it still pulls up hills with stuff in the car AND it's my cars heavier.

But the rb20 is cheaper and revs out nicer and also has a great exhaust note, it's refined and urgent.. the sr20 is harsher and gnashy.

On the other hand as mentioned somewhere with an sr20 in it, it's the engine that it came with from the factory so bolt on stuff would be easier.

Heh I really like the sr20 but loving my old 351 v8 I would pick the torque over the revs.

No. What he is referring to is the alloy block of the SR20 weighing less than that of the RB20. By putting a heavier engine in, it disrupts the natural balance of the car.

The way I see it the SR20 was produced up until 2002. So it can't be that bad.

hey guys sorry if im wasting your time on this but i just wanted to know what you's think would run better in a 180SX.... a SR20DET or a RB20DET

no doubt the SR20 is the smart choice. it's lighter, it's designed for the car, and it has no problems in making equal power to the RB. only reason to put an RB in there (either 20, 25 or 26) is to be different (not really valid as heaps of people have done these swaps) or for the sound. do the smart thing, stick with the SR.

Yeah how good are S13 Silvias that come standard from factory with RB20DET..

Think about the fact he is asking because people on SAU most likely have *RB20DET*'s in their R32 GTS-t's...
