how much can you safely change on a R33 before having to use a air/fuel management system like the GReddy E manage or SAFC and how much can you increase the boost to before it becomes unsafe as well

sorry if this topic has been covered more times than you have had hot dinners but from my searches it is still a little hazey to get straight answers

Dont boost the stock turbo past 10 psi (essentially stock boost with a full exhaust) with a stock cooler. With a FMIC, dont go past 12psi (about 0.85bar). Many do go further, but they just arent reliable.

Management, my suggestion would be to get it done at the same time as a FMIC. You could just fit a boost cut defender, but this is somewhat of a band aid, and limited in the future applications.

IMHO the safe way to go is fit FMIC and management at the same time, and for measure, get a decent fuel pump to boot. Then wind in some boost.

So bottom line, full exhaust is fine. FMIC is borderline, dont boost until you have management and fuel pump. There will be people that disagree, but I do tend to be a bit conservative, better safe than sorry is my motto :)

PS, just to confuse you, it does appear that some stock ecus (S1.5) allow boost, fmic, exhaust and still run fine. Check out the preformance forum, some guys have had great results, but this is not the norm.

I have seen quite a few people adding fuel pumps to their cars, this is because the stock one is not pumping the volume required, is it possible that I can that another way to go as an alternative is, if I just change over the injectors to something slightly larger and add a rising fuel pressure regulator to help with more fuel

or would the FPR because of it's nature to just be pushing the fuel in under pressure and not volume would the car still be prone to leaning out even with larger injectors....

sorry turbo motors and Nissan is still very alien to me... will start to learn more soon with more reading also heard someone say that the skyline ecu can be re-mapped is this true or false

Change of fuel pump could be a few reasons.. more flow at higher pressures or just to replace a 10 year old pump..

a FPR on its own can be helpful, but as you've said, without flow it can't do it's job properly.. depends on the fueling required and the headroom available in the injectors..

looking at a redline of 7000rpm means that you have about 8.5msec per revolution.. so if you measure the pulse duration of the std injector setup (I don't know what it is) and compare it to the time taken for one revolution (8.5msec) if there's time to spare you can increase the injector duration to deliver more fuel, getting more out of the std injectors.. but you'll need an aftermarket ecu for this..

I'm working on some spreasheets for this sort of thing so will post more once it's done.. checkout a book called Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. Not a bad read and things are laid out fairly simply..

R33 ecu cannot be remapped unfortunately..

the stock R33 fuel pump will be close to its limits around 200rwkw. The earlier you replace it the better.

injectors and FPR will require some form of management, as mentioned, but still wont compensate for the stock fuel pump, which will reach its limits before the injectors which can be stretched with a FPR and management.

Bottom line, do the pump if you are modding:)

you will find greddy emanage not as popular as apexi gear on this side of the fence..starting to get more popular though... the lack of professional tuners is a problem.

as cam said...fuel pumps in these rides are usually fairly old, and most have spent their life providing fuel to higher than stock boosted engines so pretty sure they need to be changed just for the heck of it, if nothing else.. these turbo nissans respond well to being taken care of.

not many lines at all run FPR's cos there is usually no need.

most mod routes that people follow are well, well, well travelled so there is no dramas with following in their footsteps, if you want a quick reliable piece of machinery.

Always bear in mind that some of these cars have had a very very very hard life... so get to know the car a little before you start modding it.. cos no sense throwing money into mods, when normal maintenance is being neglected or has been neglected..sort all the ancillaries first

hey sunshine yeah I have jumped the fence in a big way... as there is no comparison between what I had and what I am getting. The car that I am getting appears to of been well maintained so I think I will be reasonably safe there but I hear what you are saying about looking before leaping that why I am asking all the silly questions now before I make a stupid mistake...

I am having a job and a half trying to find a Gregories type manual that does not cost nearly $200.... so a lot of my questions are hit and miss like the above...

I am hoping to get the car onto a dyno over the weekend or early next week just to see what is going on with the car and were to take it from there my first lot of mods will be fairly simple ones like dump pipe and hi flow cat then we will look at FMIC and then by the looks of it the injectors, fuel pump and Apexi... I think that should be enough to give me some fun only looking at wanting about 250kw at the wheels I think this is achievable... I just don't want to loss driveability and have something that is going to be reliable on an veryday basis

you might be struggling with the stock turbo to get 250rwkw.. round 210~220 will probably be achievable with what you've mentioned..

as for workshop manuals - they were around on the net but seem to have disappeared today.. pm me and I'll let you know how to get hold of them...

hi mate, i just want to know is getting the bigger volume fuel pump the better or the one that will do the job. I got a r32 gtr gonna change air filter and turbo back exhaust so what's the safe boost level increase for my car

I picked he car up yesterday and with it came a workshop manual it is about 500 pages worth...

Anyway went to Perth yesterday and picked up the car and I am so impressed with the way the car looks and has been very well maintained from previous owner and is a credit to him - one thing I did notice was the fuel consumption so far I have done 200klm and used half a tank is this normal consumption did not hit boost very often and was cruising home from perth to bunbury at legal speed limits ...
