Here's the text

The BMW M3 looks headed for some stiff in-house rivalry in the form of a secret twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder version of the 3-series that’s little more than a year away from introduction. The new car, depicted here in computer-generated images based on recent scoop photographs, will be badged 335i according to Autocar sources.

The future 3-series range-topper will be ready for launch in left-hand-drive European markets by mid-2006, with right-hand-drive UK sales six months later. To be offered in coupé, saloon and estate guises, the 335i should bridge the gap that will be created in BMW’s range as the next M3 moves upmarket when it arrives in 2007 with 4.0-litre V8 power and a price to match.

The 3.0-litre straight six (right) is said to produce around 330bhp – up 72bhp on the new 330i and just 13bhp shy of today’s 3.2-litre M3. The new powerplant takes a leaf out of BMW’s latest diesel engine development by employing two turbochargers – one operating at lower engine speeds to boost low-end torque with the other called upon to extend power at the top end.

‘It’s going to take turbocharging to a whole new level,’ said a supplier privy to the new engine’s performance claims. Nothing’s official, but a 0-60mph time of around 6.0sec appears to be on the cards with top speed limited to 155mph. By coupling turbocharging with Vanos variable valve timing and Valvetronic, the new engine is said to be very economical and Euro4 emission compatible.

It’s possible that BMW is planning to provide the 335i with a new double-clutch gearbox similar to Volkswagen’s acclaimed DSG transmission. Tipped to replace the sequential manual unit used on the old 3-series, its development is cloaked in secrecy with a launch date still undetermined.

The new BMW won’t be the only model to carry the 335 name. Also under development is a new 3-series model fitted with the same twin turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel that’s used in the 535d.

I don't think they are saying sequential turboing is ground braking but more

"... By coupling turbocharging with Vanos variable valve timing and Valvetronic..." thats the BMW stuff that helps them make thier N/A engines so powerful, add that in with a turbo or two and its gotta be good! ;)

Also the B4 was sequential turbod (new GT is single)

Yeah, nothing new in the design but it is interesting that one of the reasons given as to why the nissan and toyota straight six turbos were scrapped is because the couldn't be made to meet emission requirements. That was 2002 and this BMW is due 2006...

Umm.... did none of you realise that this a diesel engine? Diesel engines have differing emission requirements to petrol engines.

BMW do not do turbo petrol engines, it is philosophically against the "M" car ethos.

And before you start flaming me, yes, I know that they did the 2002 turbo.

My friend just took delivery of his 2005 spec Liberty GT and it has 2 (two) turbo's.

Very very nice car to drive. Gave my stock R34 a run for it's money. (He also paid nearly twice as much lol)

FYI- Also has a kickin McCintosh 13 speaker stereo system.

R34GTX: Who told you its twin turbo? someones been pulling your leg

The B4 was twin(sequential) turbo.. but its replacement, the new GT is only single turbo...

They had trouble with the B4 having a flat spot inbetween switching to the 2nd turbo.

Very nice car tho, my mate has a B4, McCintosh stereo - very nice sounding for a stock stereo, nice car overall

Read it again Ronin, yeah they do a 3.0 turbo diesel but this new engine is PETROL

Its not for the M3 instead its for the top model of the regular 3 series range.

nmcmahon83 and Ferni.

Yes you are both correct. I was caught up with reading two Subaru Car catalogues when his car arrived; comparing the old B4 to the new GT.

Serves me right for getting all excited over a new car. Happens to me everytime.

Thank you for pointing this out to me guys. :D

    • Give the fluid a really good flush, then go do the same track again. Report back too please
    • I think most of the benefit there is really from the battery as well, having 1 kWh or so means you don't need the engine running at idle to run the AC, when the battery is depleted you can run much higher idle to charge the battery at a lower bsfc point and then shut it back down, you can regen on braking to recover some of that power too. I can't imagine the benefit from only running the compressor as much as needed is huge if you're mostly only running the AC on hot sunny days where it really needs to work hard to keep interior cabin temp under ambient.
    • Yeah, unless you're doing it by the book, your data is probably not useful. Boiling point drops rapidly with only just a little water in it.
    • How hard are you tracking it? I have 378 in front and 355 in the back with decent pads and my brakes were spongy after a decent session with lots of braking. It was a short track though but got up to around 190-200 max. be keen to hear. Mind you, I havent flushed my fluid so thats probably part of reason.
    • Awesome thanks for the reply Man! I already plugged up the back just cause I can’t take a chance on it leaking on me again haha. But i will fab a catch can with 2x for the cam covers and a lower one for the sump vent.    Now as this will drain back as well , Is there any concern I should have of the oil being drained back. I don’t run e85 or anything .   2nd question is, from the picture does it seem that my sump fitting is above oil level? Silly question but I rather have someone’s experienced opinion lol
