I hav a R32 GTR and wana get it lowerd, im thinking of just goin for king springs. since im gonna wait till i get my tax back and go for sum coil overs.

does any1 here hav any suggestions since i dont wana spend too much then just throw them out wen i get the coil overs

cheers

mate if you decide on kings what ever you do dont put in super lows, this idiot not gona name the place put them in instead of kings lows and it handles worse than a commodore!

i ended up putting my standard springs back and opted for a set of koni yellow shocks with a 10mm drop which the shocks allow for..

Mabbe tyr whiteline or pedders but if you are gona put coilovers you should save you $$4 and wait

Just gotta ask.....

Why do you want coil overs?

Are you going to be adjusting the height often?

Or are you going to put them in, set the height once and never touch them again?

Because if it is the latter your are waisting your money. Get a set of Whiteline low coils and a set of Bilsteins shocks with multiple circlip grooves for the bottom spring seats. The select the height you wan't and stick them in. You will end up with a much better ride/handling compromise than 95% of the coil overs out there.

If you want to have a look at Bilsteins thsi sort of height adjustment, pop over to the Stagea forum and have a look at my posts on Stagea Suspension. There are quite a few pictures as well as the handling philosophy.

:P

I hope these bilsteins are a bit of all right - just getting inserts fitted to the bodies of my 32GTR front coil overs now...!

Bilsteins for Skylines are a full replacement shock, you don't use any part of your standard shock absorbers. This is a standard GTR front shock and a Bilstein replacment shock, with spring seat lowered on the circlip grooves for the correct height;

Hi SK, I've previously had my Kei Office coil overs rebuilt with Koni inserts, and destroyed the Koni inserts...

Consequently I'm having Bilstein inserts fitted to the coil over bodies as below:

i see your picture includes a part of your feet too!

Hmmmmm, the only parts useable from the Kei Office coil over are the springs and the top spring seat. You can buy a coil over threaded section, a bottom spring seat and a lock ring that fits over the Bilstein shock. You will need a more substantial bump stop than that one on the Kei Office, maybe that's why the Konis got killed.

:D

PS yep my feet just love to get in on the act

yep I think that's what happened. Shock reco have actually removed the inserts from the alu body and told me they've put in a bilstein "strut insert"...?

like this I guess inside the alu body:

Hey sk,

i recently installed whiteline springs (25mm low) and bilsteins onto my r33

i understand that any lower will affect handling badly, especially since i dont have the camber kits fitted, but anyway, i was wondering where you get the extra grooves machined in to lower the circlip?

also the aluminium spring seat on the rears were too small they wouldn fit over the shocks so we had to use the dremel to grind some off the inside, have u had this happen before?

the bilsteins were direct from the supplier, not from whiteline, im not sure if whiteline machine in a lower groove for the circlip than the standard one i am using..??

I have found a couple of the rear Bilsteins with tight alloy spring seats, the ones I fitted on the Stagea had to be lubed and hammered on. It was never a problem with the pressed steel lower spring seats that Bilstein used before the cast alloy ones. I haven't had to machine any so far though.

I usually do the extra circlip grooves myself on the lathe, drives the race team machinist crazy 'cause I am so slow. Heasmans, the NSW Bilstein distributor, can do it for you, it costs around $10 per shock for an 3 extra grooves. I do them 8 mm appart.

thanks for that, i guess the quality control on making the seats is not so good.. i tried the 'hammer' method to start with  but gave up with fears of smashing the seat into small alloy pieces :) so then decided on dremel.

so just to get this clear :

the standard circlip position along with the whiteline low springs provide a 25mm drop already, however you can make this even lower by lowering the circlip?

btw. thanks for pointing me to heasmans for the machining(if i ever bother!), they are the only suspension/alignment place i go to and trust anyway, they always do a good job, unlike tyre shops!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well the bilsteins went in on Saturday, with nice big yellow bump stops :O and 450lb springs.

Instantly they felt much more controlled than the Konis that were in it, in fact I had to up the damping on the rear Konis to match the front bilsteins. Very happy with them so far - comfortable at low speeds, and the variable damping seems better at coping with big hits too.

The spring rates are much better than before (F 650, R 450) now F 450, R350. The rears still are too hard, and 'skip' a little struggling to keep the back end tidy. Will change over to some 275lbs or 250lbs and see how I go soon. Just can't be bothered pulling the rears out at the moment!
