Hey guys,

I changed my gearbox oil the other day, after about 30 mins of driving, while I was sliding, the speedo and odometer just died.

It is a 89 GTST 4 dr. But it used to be an auto, it had a conversion in japan. I couldn't see a speedo cable running to the box, but it does have power cables. Does this mean it is a 33 box (electronic)?

Can someone tell me how to tell what box it is, then what I should be doing to fix it?

I am guessing that maybe when I put the hose in to fill it up I bumped the sensor? Or maybe it was co-incidence and something else happened.

First think I need to work out if it's electronic or cable driven.

Cheers

Chris

Jump under the car and have a look if there is a speedo cable running from the rear of the gearbox on the speedo drive to the top of the fire wall near the brake/clutch master cylinders. Maybe the speedo gear drive on the sensor shat itself?? Don't think a RB25 box would be bolted up to your RB20DET, but could be possible.

You could also try taking the speedo cluster out and make sure the cable is firmly in place against the rear of the cluster.

Sorry about taking so long, I have been sick all week.

Ok, I have the numbers off the box.

I found what I assume is the speedo cable, comes out just in front of where the gearstick comes down, runs up to the firewall, under a black cover (on the firewall)

i don't see how me changing the oil could effect the speedo - the cable is nowhere near the filler hole. But what are the electic cables that are locaded on the opposite side of the filler hole? Maybe I bumped whatever is inside the box?

So what order should I check things in?

Cheers

Chris

bump

i have seen the speedo cable snap at the cluster end.

get underneth and unscrew the cable holder and see if the drive is turning when u turn the wheel/taitshaft.

if it was auto it may have an electronic sender insted of the cable.

not to sure but.

a silvia one will fit but that depends on your diff ratio. for acuracy.

they can be really tight getting out some times

it sounds like a coincedance but. perhaps some metal got washed up into the drive when u changed the oil. jacked up on one side etc.

hope that helps
