Hey guys....i need some info about rebuilding engines.

Issue 1:

Recently I spoke to my mechanic about my broken RB20 engine in my R32 GTS4-T. As a GTS4 Rb20 is very hard 2 come by in melb at the moment (front diff, different sump and dont wanna change the sumps either) he suggested a rebuild. He said all up i'm looking at 2 grand.

Firstly...how's that price wise?

Secondly...he said something about not "thrashing it" for at least a month....and drive it "normally" (as in how my Dad drives @ low revs). Does that sound right?

Issue 2:

I also spoke to him about my R32 GTR.....same scenario. Engines gone, and he wants $2000 to rebuild it, and again, drive "normally" for at least a month.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanx.

Ali.

im sure a more experienced person will have a better answer, but i would say the 'driving normally' would be the bedding in period for the new parts in the engine ie. let all those shiny new bits get accquaited with the oldies in the engine so they all get along..

id you just throw those shinies in there and rev it out they wont be very happy. bedding in pretty much is just letting all the new parts ease in and get all the straight cut and little ridgid bit off so they settle into the engine and stay settled in the right spot.

To remove, repair and replace an RB20DET 4wd for $2K is amazing, take it. I wouldn't do it for less than $4K.

To remove, repair and replace an RB26DETT for $2K is amazing, take it. I wouldn't do it for less than $5K.

Do a search on running in engines, there is plenty on it.:D

THanks heaps warren! Prasanna has a GTS4 engine......he wants $1350 for it with 2 months warranty on startup, plus I have to pay my mechanic 500 dollars labour to fit and remove, all up costs me $1850, and i can't be bothered running in the engine as I'm selling......so im very happy.

Cheers.
