great info there Lucien. The reason i like arias over wiseco is they have a champered edge on the piston deck wheras wiseco have it square, the tampered edge will take alittle more punishment whereas I have seen wiseco's that have chipped the edge off and the metal has gone on to cause other problems!!! Je are also very good!!

I found this comparison quite interesting (keeping in mind its for Honda pistons, not Nissan RB-series):

LW.

There are 3 very important words in that comparison, "I sell Wiseco".

Tip #2 don't look at what WAS tested, look for what WASN'T. for example I would have though that hardness would be important in a piston, but no uniform hardness test results are shown. Perhaps they did test hardness and Wiseco came up not so good. After all if the Wiseco has the smallest tolerances and the lightest weight, then it is quite likely they are high silicone content and that introduces a number of hardness versus brittlenes and durability compromises.

We don't sell pistons of any brand, but we use JE in RB's and we have never had a piston problem.

:)

There is no doubt that you raise an important point: both the piston brands he sells come out reasonably well. I still think that as long as you only use it as one piece of evidence it can be quite useful. There are also a number of threads across a range of forum about the comparison. Its worth doing a search on google to see some of the points made.

Its also intersting what you said about hardness: are there any other obvious metrics missing from that test that you can see?

Regardless, as I said I found it "interesting", but not the final word :)

Edit: I should also say, that at least the guy is upfront that he sells those pistons although you might argue with how he rationalises that :D

Lucien.

exxu1, i'm in the same boat as you and have been looking around for the best pistons i can get for a rebuild, and have come down to three braqnds HKS, WISECO and JE. The last two i'm still trying to find a good source to get pricing for but HKS are quiet well price and available. So if anyone knows a good place to buy wiseco and je from i would be very helpfull.

From what i am led to believe HKS use JE Pistons and Carillo Rods anyway. I Stand to be corrected though.

HKS, tomei, etc all use rebadged parts these days. The badge that says HKS usually adds a few hundred dollars to the price.

Who makes the cooling channel pistons for Tomei, because I haven't found anyone else selling them (although I haven't exactly looked hard)?

LW.

i wouldn't be so sure that all these big jap companies are just selling other peoples parts. I would think that their factorys do more than just print their names on cardboard boxes.

Luciens comment on the tomei pistons is one point.

Howdy pete,

thanks for your in put chaps.

When you find any more info Pete on where and how much let me know please because we are both experiencing the same thing. i did see some JE's on EbAY for around $1200.00 aus, but i did see alink saying that Wiesco's for RB out of Us for $600 US, but damn ,i cant find the threa

Tomei may add the cooling channel etc but i doubt they actually manufacturer all their items inhouse these days.

Outsourcing is the way the world works these days

YOu will find most companys use blanks then machine them to their standards... JE definately supplies to HKS whether HKS buy them complete or machine is anyones guess... I dont know about tomei, I rekon they would by blanks and machine them. HKS +Carillo rods is a definate, i have seen them in the flesh and can garuntee this!!!

In one of the HPI Vids they have a visit to the tomei factory where they show the pistons / cams being manufactured.

I think JUN make their own as well

Either way, I would use JE Pistons and Carillo Rods (HKS is the same) if you are doing a big HP Build.

Having said that, I think mario is using JUN parts? But probably special order (read: hell expensive) stuff.

    • I'd say closer to OG GTX3582R, just smaller trim - so 59mm inducer/82mm exducer as opposed to 62/82 for the first gen GTX3582R. Yeah EFRs were boss, the EFR8474 is still an absolute beast and it perplexes me that people still go to things like Turbosmart/Garrett etc when the results people are getting with those are pretty unremarkable compared to what you could get with a turbo available well before those options came out.  DriftSquid (I think) "upgraded" from an EFR9174 to a Turbosmart turbo and promised a comparison video - and kinda shuffled awkwardly and did a bit of diversion from the fact that they didn't get any improvement going to the currently massively hyped brand of turbo from a turbo that was a bit of a frankenstein that had been well superceded in it's own range before the Turbosmart unit he put on there even came out. I suspect the EFR would outperform most Xonas for what a lot of less-insane RB owners would go for, in the 400-600kw range but the Xonas are looking hard to beat up to maybe in the mid 700kw range at this stage- basically where EFRs don't really reach, and before the Precision turbos take over.  What the Xonas do well in the "EFR range" is be easier to package etc, and work very well if a divided housing doesn't suit your application.
    • Are you sure the gasket is blown? What are the issues? Thermocure is the only flush I've seen do anything with rust, very impressed with that, Prestone, rust will be by the pool having a cigarette.
    • And since the flush you have a blown head gasket? Have you lifted the head off yet?
