Is there any preference between the external amp ignition coils and those with the amp built into each one, as far as output or reliability is concerned? At this stage of the wiring I can use either type. ECU is Motec M800, engine is RB26. Thanks.

I really don't think there should be any difference, between the inbuilt ignitor coils or the external ignitor pack configuration.

Just use whichever coils are in best condition, low km's with no cracks in them (Common problem from the heat buildup under the coil covers in skylines)

The only advantage to the external ignitor pack is you could change it/swap it out for a different ignition booster more easily without changing coils as well. But changing coils is not really that time consuming.

The spark should be the same with either setup you asked about unless the coils are damaged.

    • I definitely agree with you there - I never click on content for cars I would never ever be able to get or compete with/against/be seen next to. Seeing a MX5 compete with a FD RX7 will make people upset though, for sure. Even in 2.5L Turbo form which is pretty grass roots. (or at least as grass roots as classic cars can be) Yes we're all classic car owners now.
    • Wonder what the cause is, but here's hoping it's nothing too serious.
    • People don't always want builds that are overly expensive, or have engineering/registration/insurance issues and head aches that come with them Whilst big dollar builds, and complicated stuff is interesting to watch, there is only a tiny % of people who would actually use this information, or have the spare finances to drop on said builds, whereas the buy a cheap(ish) cool car, and make it better, with a average budget, that the average Joe or Jane could achieve will always be a winner in my opinion

    • It's kind of interesting - They definitely do builds that split the difference between what they like and what will generate views and engagement. The NC Platform always surprises everyone in a good way, in an uncomfortably good way some may say. They could throw a LS in there and arguably have the best (and best performing) car of the entire stable. But that isn't necessarily what draws views, because people viewing don't want to accept the vegetables of a LS NC MX5 being a superior vehicle in every way (including fun) than a RB26 240Z. This is also why there's not a lot of content about the GR Yaris (on the web in general). They're too good, yet 'only a Yaris' The community doesn't want certain cars to be as good as they are - to beat their hero cars, and I believe the NC MX5 is absolutely one of those cars.
