Hi guys, I know nothing about networking, hubs, switches straight through / crossover network cables etc.

Can someone please let me know:

1. what componentry i need to hook up one PS2 to another PS2 (both slim) to be able to play GT4 against each other

2. how to hook the bastards up

It would be very much appreciated!!

cheers

as for your questions about the HDD in the PSTWO (slims) Yes it can be done, you just need a coppy of a program called USBeXtreme (i got mine about two weeks ago for $69) External HDD caddy ( i prefer them to have a mains powered, not running of the USB power) and HDD (any size will do, but keep in mind that the game images are around 4GB)

Have fun

Sorry to hijack, so you can just buy a USBeXtreme to play backups without a chip? just plug a portable hard drive in with the game image on it?

Bingo, no worries about your PStwo warranty either, cause they just plug into your USB port and the USBeXtreme is a usual games disk.

i'll try and give you an general idea.

step 1, buy coppy of usb exetreme ( around depends where you get it $69)

step 2, get a 3.5" or 2.5" HDD and caddy to sute. (i've got a 120GB thats got

about 27 games on it, and it's pretty much full)

step 3, download the games ripping software from usbexetreme from UsbeX's homepage..ummmm....http://www.hdadvance.com/download/ I use the window's mode client, as it's so easy even my girlfriend can use it.

step4, plug USB HDD into pc, format (NTFS) then use the USBeX's client software to format (not sure it changes the formatting, but i did the second format anyway, mightn't have had to)

step5, rip games most of the games i've tryed ripping have worked, some don't, i think the success rate is around the 90% mark.

step6, plug usb caddy into PS2 insert usbExetreme disk and power both (caddy and PS2) up

that's about it.

If any of that has made any sence, then good for me, else check out this page.

http://www.hdadvance.com/usb_extreme_how-to-use.htm

But yeah no Mod chip is needed your PS2 don't need to be opened up, and you don't have to pay anyone to do it, you can do it all yourself.

pm me if you have other questions about USBexe or PSslims

yeah sorry about the hijacking

No worries on the hijack! that's the next thing I am going to do... step by step guide to HDD 'backup' gaming is A-OK by me :D

plus got GT4 networked today :( yay!

This should just be the "I don't know anything about PS2, help me!" thread ;)

guys, don't go buying USB Extreme. Just download "USB advance" and get someone with a modchipped PS2 to dump it onto your memory card.

Also you're not guranteed you can play ANY game off the HDD, all the newer games like GT4 have protection (although they can be defeated) against it, and some of the older games aren't compatible with the method.

Also I'd hold off if I was getting a USB HDD or anything, Team Xtreme just came out with an IDE adaptor for slimline PS2's so you can use HD Loader rather than USB advance or USB extreme (which is a commercial repackaging of USB advance) in combination with a regular IDE HDD.

If you guys want I can make a xps (X-Port savefile) with the USB Advance, FTP server software (so you can FTP into your PS2, and issue unix commands to mount and unmount images of your games on the HDD) and a launch menu so you have a visual start point.

Funky if what your talking about is the full fledged IDE interface kit for the slim PStwo console that is currently under development by Team Xtender crew, then the installation will be very close to the xbox scene's LPC rebuild Kits, place down the flex pcb and solder the points.

Not such an easy instalation for your average home handyman...and if you've only just baught you Slim, or your still in warranry, then this instalation will blow that away.

I know the beta testing is just beginning on this, but last i heard they were still having problems with the HDD wanting to format all the time.

in any case keep us updated on the matter if you know of any new news?

drakan

edit: oh yeah not too sure on the facts, but if you download UsbAdvanced, don't you need something like swap majic to boot the burnt disks....oh hold on thats where dumping it onto the memory card.....no hold on again! Dumping onto the memory card uses the exploit (PSX game Disk) to 'search' the memory card for any programs, usb advanced, and boot them right? But i'm pretty sure they fixed that exploit with the Slims.

I could be wrong though, i like to think i keep a rather open mind.

    • By went out the old cluster completely died first it was the odo lcd then the gauges stopped working, Nissan said the board/chip went bad. I then ordered a used one off of amazon. I can transplant the speedo gauge itself I still have the old bad cluster. in fact I am trying to visually inspect to see any differences between the two. The back of the speedos themselves have a different number on the top one has a 5 the other has a 6 i believe printed at the top and the original motor looked a bit larger. On the board itself behind the speedo I saw a few differences looks like towards the bottom the my original board didn't have a resistor at R3. The SMD chip in the top right has some different numbers on it (maybe I can swap these) and the resistor at r16 might be different colors. So the new cluster came from a non turbo but it did have TCS the ebay seller said. hopefully these images will show:  New cluster broken cluster   I will try to transplant just the speedo first.
    • I'll match that and include 3 out of 4 of the speakers in a set of Alpine front splits.
    • *all RB25 s1 if I hadn't said yet, sorry guys haha
    • Yes, the speed sensors are quite different between NA and turbo. Completely different waveform. I'm surprised it's picking up any pulses at all if it is the wrong one. As to the original problem... "the instrument cluster went out". What does that mean? What died and how? Is there any hope that you could transplant teh speedo head from that into the new one?
