Duncan- I have to retreat on my campaign against the sp9000's. I now have them on the front on some 17's with 235 on the front and they are very impressive. Guess the aspect ratio of the standard rims combined with a lack of width contributed to the horrible handling.

I have not changed the suspension at all and it is very nice. Turn in is sharper and there is now actually grip!

>_<

The thing with the price comes down to the size tho. I went for 235s over 225s as there was a $70 per tyre price difference, for the smaller tyre. But $200 for a 235/45/17 sp 9000 sport sounds cheap...

After spending some time going through this thread, I've got some quotes for the following tyres (note: Front - 235/45/17, Rear - 255/40/17):

Federal SS595 - $730 fitted (Front: $165/corner, Rear: $200/corner)

Hankook K104 - $872 fitted (Front: $194/corner, Rear: $242/corner)

Toyo T1R - $1070 fitted (Front: $247/corner, Rear: $288/corner)

I'm not overly fussed about spending the money to get the Toyo's, but from what people know about these tyres, are they worth the extra money over the Federals and Hankooks?

I've heard good things about all the above mentioned tyres, although I'm leaning towards the Federals, not because they're the cheapest, but because they seem to have relative performance to the Toyo's and hence are better value for money.

At the end of the day, I basically want a set of tyres that will give reasonable performance and durability. The car is daily driven and I have another set of rims for whenever I feel like going to the track, so I don't really need an excessively performance orientated tyre that will cost more and potentially not last as long if a better compromise exists...

What do you guys recommend?

Is there anything else I should consider?

You have read the posts on all 3 of them tyres from other members, only you can make up your mind. Sure the toyo's are a good tyre, but are they $82 a tyre better than the federals? I dont think so personally but it is still up to you what you do.

The best value for money would be the federal there, but you may get a little bit better grip out of the toyo, but i dont think that the little bit you will notice will be worth the jump in price.

And I personally think that the federal and toyo's are better than the K104. cos I know that the K104's become noisey after about 15,000 - 20,000 km's, but you will only notice that if they last that long.

I've just recently put Federals on my car

SS595

265/35 R18 $320 each

and

235/40 R18 $220 each

fitted and balanced

So far so good. Night and day difference between the Nankang NS-II's I had on there before.

Will have to see how the wear is though.

N.B. For Federal 595 RS I was quoted $570 each for 265/35 R18's!!!

Where did you get your tyres from Wilch?

Out of all the places I called for quotes, Payless Tyres in Chatswood were the only ones that stocked Federals...I think their quote was competitive, but I've really got nothing to compare it to.

N.B. For Federal 595 RS I was quoted $570 each for 265/35 R18's!!!

Ewww..they are ripping you off big time! :ninja:

Federal tyres RRP is $475 for the size mentioned above.

I had the exact same tyres fitted to my GTR for just under retail.

  • 3 weeks later...

I got a great price on FK451 from Temple of Chrome tyres, 245/45/17 for $200ea, I think they are running out stock since th 452 have arrived.

Great tyres and worth twice that price :)

Very dangerous in the wet!!

i 3rd that! Sava's are absoulutely crap in the wet! Bought myself a set of Eagle F1's 225/45/R16 at $60 each. (got the hookup at dunlop) :D I found 'em to be awesome both in the wet and dry

Witht he common sized federal tyres over 18 inch, you can normally screw the RRP down a fair bit, I know that with a couple of sizes alone in the federal range, the RRP price is like 80% markup on purchase price, so keep an eye out for the best deals, also the price of federals dropped in all comon sizes about 2 months ago, and most tyre places havent passed the price drop onto the customers, so once again, ask a heap or questions and try to get the best price., I wouldnt pay anymore than $480 for any federal passenger tyre, unless it is the RS's then you will be paying a little bit.. keep that in mind.

im using FK452 275/35s on mine, and they perform well.....going through a lot of corners and had no problems with them so far.

they seem to get worn out fast though....

The federal 595's are performing well in the dry.

Theres still a wet test yet.

they came with compliance on my stocko rims, and to be honest i think they are great tyres....even in the wet, i hardly had any problems with them whatsever.

just bought a set of federal 595ss in 17inch 255 R and 235 F.

For $700 from payless tyres in chatswood.

I also recently bought a set of Federal SS595's from Payless Tyres in Chatswood - same size as above, same price as above, excellent service and would highly recommend.

Despite all the positive comments already posted, I was still pleasantly surprised at how well they perform once I got them fitted on my car (280ish rwkw R33) - they definately exceeded my expectations.

Obviously there may be some slightly better performing tyres available, although considering they're likely to be close to double the price (or more) and probably not as durable, I don't think there's many better value for money street tyres available on the market at the moment.

well i use Bridgestone Potenza 275-35 R18 they have a nice compound, i like it when i warm them up by doing a 10k launch and then launching on their tracks. they are shit expensive, but they are one of the best tires around. (again, my opinion)

    • Ok glad you clarified on the frenchy’s options , I was worried about if my oem hoses would fit the new compressor or not if I just bought the bracket/compressor kit ,  didn’t realize they also sold a larger full conversion kit. Hmm may just go oem in that case then to make it easy only because I plan to sell this car to upgrade to a 32 GTR or 34 GTT.
    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
