Hankoook Ventus RS2, great bang fer buck. And fer the street, they are fantastic, they even fair generally ok on the track. Forget abt the hankook 104 cuz the rs2 newer and even better. Rough price, my mate just bought a set of 4, 235/45/17, from sydney fer 660. Yes, brand new.

Just a quick one on the dunlop direzza dz02g cuz i currently have them on fer an upcoming track event, R compound seems pretty good, heats up fast. The H compound seems to take a bit longer. But grip is generally not too bad so far. However, very expensive when brand new and also i find them very noisy compared to other semis like the a048 and the v70a.

Yokohama advan A048's

255 40 17

dry: 10

wet: 10

over all: 10/10

These tyres i have on a gtr, i no longer trust anything else to be under my car, they are so good for driving day to day.

they are probably a bit hard on the driveline but that doesnt really bother me too much as its all non standard!

i buy these about 50% worn. they last around 5-7 months except for the nails i get from time to time :D

in the wet i find it very hard to loose grip. even with 500hp and lack of tread these are great!!

Federal ss595 In 235/45/17

Dry:10/6

Wet: 10/5

Value:10/10 $135 Each

Their turn in is a bit averidge but mid corner grip is pertty good. close to the limit they become very noisy and skip around a bit. but they take a beating and for $540 for a complete set they are excellent value. not the best tyre but they last well and have a good rim protector good for daily driving. Not recommended for high performance applications.

Maxxis MA-V1 215/45/17

Dry:10/8

Wet:10/8

Value:10/10 $127 Each

Really good directional stability they grip really well for a tyre with 300 tred wear, Really predictable and good on their limits. they will chunk up pretty easily due to the hard compound. but a great budget tyre. I would buy them again.

What would one pay for a set of 235/45/ZR17 Bridgestone RE55's or Federal RS595's?

Also is $394 a corner a good price for TOYO R888's in the same size? (TOYO RA1's - $385)

Can get you the R888 235/45/17 or similar sizes for much cheaper if interested, $250 mark for 235/45/17

Also available R888 225/45/17, suit r34 gtt similar price around $230.

just a heads up for Sydney people, Hankook has a special on 245/45/17 Z212 RS2s, normally around $230+, i got a set for $165. You should be able to get this price from any Hankook dealer since its a special from the supplier, i got mine from Jax in Kensington (Anzac Parade)

Hi mate,

u means $165 each? and how u would rate them?

Cheers

Yeah 165 each, i cant give a definitive answer on them now, i have not scrubbed them in properly yet, but so far they feel like they will be very good and the sidewalls feel nice and stiff. I will write up a review once i 'test' them properly :)

I read up a lot before i purchased, and the general consensus seems to be that they are similar to a Falken RT-615; slightly better in the wet, slightly worse in the dry and a bit less prone to overheating.

There is a Grassroots magazine review floating around the net which compares the Hankooks and other street/track tyres, its a good read if you are interested.

I have had a good drive on the Hankook RS-2s now, in the dry and torrential rain.

Dry grip is very good, however i am still not sure if they are fully scrubbed in yet, the tread itself feels quite stiff and even after hard driving where the tread on most tyres would get torn up a bit they look like new.

Either way, the grip so far is very good and predictable, they are similar in dry grip to toyo t1-rs but i think they will improve with more use.

In the wet they are good, they dont aquaplane even on flooded roads, and they hold second gear (186rwkw) but they are not as good as the t1-rs i had on before which were genuinely grippy in the rain.

Sidewalls are nice and stiff, which helps to make them predictable in wet and dry.

I think ill have to drive on the them a bit more before a final verdict.

I've been driving around on these tyres for a few days now and honestly not too impressed. They are wrapped around a set of 18" 8" rims on the front and 18" 9" wide rims on the rear. Possibly the tyre being a little stretched on the rear is severely affecting any sidewall flex to help flatten the tyre on the road for straight line acceleration.

They grip almost identically as a set of Federal 535 225/50/16" tyres that cost me $120 each. The Federal 535's are considerably better in the wet and only slightly better in the dry. The 535's manage to hold second gear wot roll on throttle from 40-50km/h second gear ok with only slight chirping through the gear, where as the NS2's let go and cause a little fish tail.

Quite dissapointed. Good thing there a mates set of rims/tyres.

They do however corner better than the Federals.

Please tell me these tyres get quieter after they've been scrubbed in! My sister just bought a new car and had mags with these tyres fitted, and they're rather noisy, especially seeing as the car itself is so quiet. Haven't taken the car for a decent drive to check their performance yet, as the car itself still has less than 300kms on it.

If they don't get quieter, I'm going to be very disappointed...

An update on the Hankook RS2s..

I have done a fair few hard kms on them now and have a really good feel for them.

After driving on a fair few wet roads since last time i think they are pretty crap in the rain. Not crap compared to a rubbish tyre like a falken 326, but crap when compared with a good all weather tyre like a Toyo T1-R or a Dunlop sp sport maxx.

On damp roads they are very good, if the road is actually wet then caution is required. That said, they are predictable and the low level of wet grip in some ways makes them easier to handle.

Now for the good news, dry road grip!

In terms of cornering they are excellent, sidewalls feel stiff, and when they do lose traction they do so reasonably progressively. Another good point is that thye take a beating very well. With other tyres I have owned, after a hard drive the tread would tend to get hot/melt and look nasty. With the Hankooks even after long hard driving they still look perfect, no tearing or melting of the tread >_<

A weird thing i have noticed is that the straight line acceleration grip is not comparable with cornering grip. They seem to have masses of grip in cornering which makes you expect a lot of grip in a straight line... and although they hold my power fine i can tell they wont hold much more.

In conclusion, i highly recommend these tyres.. Considering they are really a dry weather tyre halfway between a road tyre and r compound they do their job well, especially for the price!

Is't a good time to get Bridgestone S-03s? They are due to be replaced soon and are on special at the moment.

I've got a quote for 255/40ZR17 94Y $410 a tyre

and 225/45ZR17 91Y $305 each

both rolling diameter 636mm

in terms of price and performance, are there better value alternatives at the moment?

cheers

    • Haha yea it's a bit of a weird setup at the moment, just wanted to make sure I sorted out any headaches before dyno day. At the moment I've changed the exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe, 460lph fuel pump and rising rate reg as well as the previously mentioned headstuds and gasket. The nistune was already mapped for the car as it was and drove around for a few months no worries. The plan is to run flex fuel hence the big pump, which I've wired direct to the battery through a relay to avoid voltage issues.
    • Um. Was the ECU the same as the one previously there? I know R33's needed R32 GTST ECU's or other tomfoolery to run Nistune. This is such a wild setup. Most people would plumb in the turbo then not drive the car (i.e tow it to a tuner). What's actually changed since it last ran?
    • I'm a bit stuck with this one fellas, I recently decided to undertake a turbo conversion on my GTS-4, ended up pulling the motor to replace all the seals and do an mls head gasket and arp head studs while I was at it. Everything has gone according to plan, no oil or coolant leaks, compression checked out, and decided to give it a test before I book it in for a tune As it stands right now, the turbo only has oil lines plumbed so that I don't put boost into my untuned engine, and I'm using the factory GTS-T crossover pipe with a maf and poddy as a temporary intake. The car starts with relative ease and idles amazingly, however as the title suggests it really doesn't want to rev up, runs very smooth but almost feels choked out and unresponsive to the throttle, almost like it's running lean or something? I've triple checked my vacuum lines and timing with a timing light, injectors haven't been touched as of yet to avoid flooding the engine and worked perfectly beforehand, new plugs and coilpacks, I've even unbolted the cat just to see if it spontaneously collapsed, no dice The car currently has a nistune r32 gtst ecu installed so I have no way to check for fault codes. At this point I'm a bit stumped. Is this normal behaviour for a car with a turbo bolted onto the exhaust going nowhere? I'd imagine the turbo wouldn't cause this much restriction in the exhaust without the boost going through the intake. Any ideas? If necessary I can link a video of how it responds to full throttle while in neutral.
