Am currently getting some pretty high under bonnet temperatures, due to the custom dump pipe, as I cannot fit the factory heat shielding.

Does anybody have any idea whether heat wrapping could have any adverse effect on the dump pipe as I have heard that it can change the qualities of the steel and make it brittle?

Also other than heat wrapping does anybody know of an efficient way of Keeping the underbonnet temps down?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

i have had good results with that cool-it thermo wrap stuff, not on the skyline, but on my old turbo gti. the heat difference was excellent (judging by touching the exhaust) it went from wholly fcuk (hot) to hmm nice (warm)

not sure of peformance advantages though

I believe that a place in Perth can now do ceramic coating, which is apparently better than heat wrapping, plus it looks much neater. If your interested I can try and find out who is doing it and the rough cost for you. It is what I will be doing to my new exhaust manifold.

that would be good thanks. I had a look into it when I got the dump done, but it was only available via adelaide, and the cost was nearly as much as the dump, thanks to shipping.

steve, the stuff that i used was called cool-it - made by thermo-tec. any car shop should have it, from memory it cost about $100

it is a fibregalss material, that you wrap around, and then spray with a sealer. make sure that your wear gloves, cause fibreglass fibre splinters in your hands is a real b i t c h .

One thing that thermal wrapping/HPC does is to keep the heat in the exhaust. This means that the air will flow faster and help spool up the turbine quicker. That said, having higher exhaust temperatures can affect oxygen sensors and catalytic converters. You may want to investigate high temp O2 sensors.

For those running full race cats, heat shouldn't be an issue, but those who have "highflow" or semi-race cats, realise that they only take so much abuse.

As far as destroying exhaust, I can't see that happening, unless you already have issues with it. It may dis-colour your Stainless steel tip quicker?

In the end I think Thermo wrapping is a good thing, you just need to be aware of what it does and the side effects.

Wrapping the exhaust is fine ,it may shorten the life of the exhaust but its still going to last 5 or 6 years also get some kind of heatshield back on as it mainly shields the turbo which gets pretty hot anyway.

My blocked air conditioner drain turned out to be the drain tube where it enters the engine bay had got so hot it melted the tube into a blob so all the condensation(and theres lots of it ) was comming into the car through the a/c vents
