Just got a phone call from them today (to chase me up for a few piece of paper) and they've mentioned a few things what they will do in the future.

1) No more undertakings will be issued "eventually" meaning any cars that got in and haven't got the work done properly will need to be destroyed or exported.

2) Cars that have already arrived and cleared out will have random inspection done to see if the work is done as it's suppose to be. How that's gonna work, I don't know but if a Govt Dept tries to do something, I am sure they will have the time and resources to locate these cars.

Not meant to scare anyone but I thought just a courtesy to let you all know :cooldance:

I spoke to them as well and if people were not using forged De Gas Certificates or not De Gassing them every thing would of been fine,

They are smart some of these importers as they Scan a De Gas and use the same document over and over, when the crease is on the same spot over and over it is obvious what they are up to.

We had somebody scanning the last page and printing off various 15 year sign off's over here in WA, do some if these people think it is in place just for the hell of it.

When is the car supposed to have been degassed? Is that stuff submitted when the import approval is done? I bought a car in japan which already had the import approval done; so i dont have the paperwork for it. Hope it was done properly!!!

'exported/destroyed' is a bit scary!

Well if Customs won't release the car then what can you do? Export or destroy or, whichever cost less I suppose. I know a guy personally that forged a couple of de-gas and got away with it, I suppose if DEH is cracking down on this and demands to inspect his cars, he'll probably flip with a huge fine and for defrauding the Commonwealth with the fake cert's.

Then I asked them what if they don't like the certificate being provided? It has happened once to me already and they couldn't answer. Now I can tell you it's gonna become a bit of a lottery.

You should be eligible for an exemption from the DEH. You are entitled to one exemption between now and 31 Dec 05. Just photocopy your D/L and forward it to the customs guys handling your car when it arrives. You'll also need a letter stating your name, the VIN and that the vehicle is a one-off import for personal use (I think that's all you need to say?).

Beam over a PM if you want a hand with it and I'll send you a copy of mine. Don't let the customs agent charge you for it though. Seaway will do it for free (as it doesn't cost them anything), yet CGL in Sydney will charge you $150 to forward (read: fax) the letter you've just faxed to CGL. Apparently it's for their time/labour expenses incurred. Don't get sucked in. Choose a different agent as they won't budge on the fee.
