Good idea. It's been a long time since I've driven anything modern-ish/sporty-ish thing. Last thing I drove was a Kia Stinger GT and I thought it was rubbish =/ -
I recently calculated how much I've spent in paint and bodypart bits. All for currently 0 performance improvement. If I never did the heads or paint I would have been able to just buy one of the M4's and have 10k in change. That's how un-fun M4's are

Por que no los dos? The very definition of the sunk cost fallacy. But one that I am perfectly happy to live with.

Rent one. I drove a M4 Comp DCT and it was the most un-inspiring thing I've ever driven. Annoyingly, I still seem to want one/think M cars are 'cool'? Badge Engineering/Marketting is a big thing. It may be because a M car that has been modded to be rougher/trackier could end up being in a sweet spot of 'actually engaging' as opposed to taking a normally fun car and making it too rough to daily. There's something about a M4 with a half cage and carbon door cards and M colored straps etc that is appealing for reasons I don't quite understand. But from driving one, it was awful. Definitely try properly before you can't go back.

The problem as I see it is that it would be easy to go from shitbox to a BMW, but hard to go back if you don't like it. Because all the shitboxes have had 25 years of messing around, and you'd lose all the work put into the previous one. Whenever I think about this, I want to buy a car to see if I actually like it. And not sell the shitbox until I make up my mind. But I don't have the money, so staying with the shitbox it is 🤷♂️
