Please report back on the pedal feel, bite and the dust factor between the two.

LUCAS alot of dust, 1 week after putting them on started making noise again

this is a nightmare!

I got a 2nd opinion, about lucas break have been advised they are really bad for the discs mechanic told me that i would go through 2 sets of discs for ever lucas pad.

he recommended me another brand which is a subsidiary of bendix i forget what they are called, he said where bendxi use the medal compound this brand uses another compound - very reliable breaks, no dust and no noises

Sorry for the breif information i will provide more on this when i speak to him next

A few standard procedures for pad replacement, I always;

1. clean the pistons of the old pad dust, dirt and grit that accumulates there

2. clean and refit the stainless steel backing plates

3. clean and re-lube the sliding shafts and ramps (if they are single spot callipers)

4. clean and smooth the pad retaining shafts (if they are 4/2 spot callipers)

5. retension all the calliper retaining bolts with a tension wrench

6. remove and clean the rotors, not just the braking surface, but behind the hat where it seats on the hub.  I also give them a light hit with some course emmery.

The concept is to remove any particles from the contact areas that can cause rocking or vibration.  That's what most often makes brakes noisy, high frequency vibration.  It is most unusual for pads to cause noise from their friction action on the rotor surface.

Whats the tension for R33 GTS-t caliper retaining bolts?

I used lucas pads on my 180sx and found that they created way too much dust and i'd never run them again...

Does anyone know Winmax sports brake pads?it doesn't make much noise and it rated 0-500 degrees celcius.it definitely better than Bendix and does comparable job as those big brand such as project mu. i've got few sets of Winmax pads on hand for both R33gtst and 34 Gtt.

$170 for front and $160 for rear. $320 whole set! pm me if interest~

im over it , they are still making noise i just dont give a 5hit now

every1 has there own opinion on this matter each mechanic i went to says something different, my uncle the mechanic looked at my discs and thinks that the mechanic i went to didn’t shave my dics

i had the exact same problem with my 33. i tried everything and i do mean everything, machined the discs several times and tried about 4 different types of pads. in the end i went to Race Brakes at Wetherill Park and changed my discs to slotted and it stopped! ! ! Brett at Race Brakes told me that my discs had a very slight lip in them and this was what was possibly causing the noise. He also explained that sometimes in machining a discs the outer rim on the disc in not machined causing a lip and noise! something u may want to look into

ok this is what happen, and im still having the same issue

what i have done

machined the dics again - same issue

now my uncle and i cleaned my callipers, cleaned the pistons basically done what SydneyKid suggested. and for a Week it was bloody great not one noise and i was so happy, then i drove towards Katoomba and on the way back it came back and its as worse as before. Hence why my uncle and i came to think the callipers including pistons etc are causing this noise. My uncle advised to get a new caliper set the one where they have only 2 pistons rather then 4hour at the front and a 2 piece set rahter then the standard one piece caliper, Peter from Advan recons thats crazy because im down grading my brakes. I took it took a "brake specialist place" and they looked at it for 10 mins and said i need to replace my front discs because they are too thin and need new pads all up $800 now in my point of view thats $800 bucks spent and problem will still be there because i know for a fact my back discs are also making that noise!

maybe i should just get for new discs like the brake man said but im worried if i sent $1500 bucks and the issue doesnt get fixed!

It would seem that you have a problem that is causing the brake squeel but it isn't the brakes themselves. Since you have changed pads and rotors, had the rotors machined etc. Several times by the sound of it.

Plus you are unique, I have not had a Skyline that I can't fix the brakes with the usualy service list (as previously posted). Whatever the problem is, changing the callipers won't fix it, they are not the cause. You must be doing something unusual, or live somewhere that the local conditions are causing it or maybe your car has some parts that are actually the reason (not the brakes themselves).

From what I have read, you do some work and the squeel is not there for some days. Then it comes back, this is not normal and it is going to take some extra effort to find.

Let me try some left field things;

1. What you you wash your wheels with? Don't laugh, I had a neighbour that washed his wheels with dishwashing liquid and his brakes would scream for days after it.

2. Do you live near the ocean? Or some large body of water?

3. Do you drive on dirt roads? Whereabouts are you actually located?

4. Have you checked the wheel bearings? If they are loose or dry (no grease) they will cause the disc to vibrate (at high frequency).

5. My uncle's brakes used to always squeel, because he was a whimpy braker, they never had any heat into them. So they accumulated gases that didn't get burnt off. I would take it for a drive for half an hour for him once every few months and the scream would be gone. (He reckoned I was a genius brake mechanic). Have you tried hammering the crap out them. Drive around with your left foot on the brake pedal for a few k's. Get them so hot you can smell them. Smoke is good.

6. Wheel nut torque, I hope you are not overtightening the wheel nuts. That can cause the rotors to warp eventually.

7. Have you tried borrowing some wheels? When the brakes are squeeling consistently, swap the wheels over and see if it stops.

8. When the brakes have been squeeling consistently for a couple of days, try hosing out one of the front wheels, in the morning before you go anywhere. Give it a good flush around, splash out any loose dust etc.

9. Do the pads wear flat? If the calliper has a sticky piston it will wear the pads unevenly, they will be tapered away from the that piston. A frozen piston makes the pad chatter, but a lazy one can make it squeel.

Sorry you must have mis understood me i haven’t changed my discs yet just needed to know if that is whats causing the problem since i didn’t have this issue until i changed my pads and got discs machined.....

1. wash my wheels with the same stuff i was my car with NXT Generation Car Wash

2.3 I live in western subs in syd (Blacktown area) no dirt roads and no ocean

4. i have checked the pistons pretty oily, and not dry.

5. tried hammering the brakes a few times, even tried braking with my left foot, this issue happens after 10 mins of driving when they start heating up. and only on light braking.

6. tightening the nuts as normal not over doing it, noise comes from all 4 wheels

7. have got my stock wheels might put them on and see if that’s the issue i hope so

id rather spend my money on new wheels :)

8. done that alot of dust comes out bloody Lucas

9. haven’t check this one but will do

just for further info, this problem was fixed after cleaning the callipers for a week then issue came up again so thats what led me to believe it was the callipers

but looks like i might have to buy new discs and pads after trying the things you suggested

You know any places I can take the car too?

Hey boys i took the car to bel's the other day regarding this on and off issue.

So weird the guys at bel took my pads out and straight away the guy said what’s causing the noise is the fact that i don’t have "shin pads" never seen it before in my life he said he cant understand why they are not there. It would explain why the noise is coming from all wheels because none of the wheels have this.

Just a quick question if anyone knows how much they cost?

My brakes make a squeaking noise like there is a high spot on the discs themselves as it happens slowly when im driving slowly and fast when im going fast.

i took all my wheels off and spun the disc and its where the noise is coming from.

i agree it makes you feel like your car is a pos but bleh who cares in the end.

i think my discs have been machined as there is a lip on the outer edge.

when i can afford it im going to get a set of DBA slotted rotors and better pads and hopefully they will sound abit better.

    • My hold point for future mods is that I want a OEM detachable hard top first, but, finding one is a pain, MX5 Mania are looking for one for me, but, as hens teeth are more common, finding one in Australia is proving problematic  I can get a OEM one from overseas, hell, you can still get new ones in 'Merica, but, shipping is a absolute killer and I cannot justify the cost, or the risk of it being damaged during transport As for the aftermarket hardtops, whilst they do the job of being a hard top, and are fine for a track car, they don't seal well (read: leak like a sieve in the rain), and you need a plastic/poly rear window, plus they are a bolt in option only and not made to be easily removed I liked how the hard top on my NB could be fitted, and removed, by myself, in less than 5 minutes I know it sounds bad, but I'm waiting for someone to write off a car with one so I can swoop in on their pain, it will go to a good home though, so my guilt of this is tempered

    • No, you don't want to plug the vacuum line, as that will turn that side of the booster into an air spring and probably make it feel worse. I'm not saying that the GTR master itself doesn't need a booster. I haven't paid attention to the GTR one to know what size it is cf the non-GTR ones. But when you think about it - they have to do the same job, which is to move a little slave piston a few mm to do what it is supposed to do, and that final action is the same on all the cars. So, it is very unlikely that the GTR MC is any different than the others, because it has the same pedal stroke and the same output requirement. The booster just makes it feel easier. I'd suggest you probably have an actual hydraulic problem. It's totally common on these old shitboxes.
    • Ye, in terms of bolting up the "Conversion" from a GT to a GTT is effectively "Use GTT parts for everything" Except the subframe itself, because you won't want a HICAS/4WS subframe. Remember your ABS system will be different too, thanks to GT being the S15 3 sensor system, instead of the R34 4 sensor system for wheel speed. I do not know how people get this to work given R34 diffs do not have a provision for an ABS sensor (they are on the tone wheels of the axles). I assume***** people use S15 gear/R34NA forever when they realize this - Or they convert it to a rear diff/axles that are R33 style which I presume has the singular speed sensor on the diff itself, but then you have to wire it all in and...and... and...
