Is it an "engine out" job, or not? If it isn't, how difficult is it to get to?

Realistically it's a 'sump off' job because the front of the sump bolts to the bottom face of the oil pump, plus all the cam belt covers, cam belt, crank pulley, etc have to come off.

IMHO, best done with the engine out. It's probably possible to do it with the engine in, but would be difficult and the risk of damaging things is much greater.

Its a real tough job in the car but can be done but usually ends up with oil leaks.

Also be aware that early RB26s have short oil pump drive flanges and using aftermarket pumps is not a good idea with out fitting the JUN drive kit or getting Sweeting and denny etc to mod the nose of the crank(engine out-crank out)

Steve is correct and the other little problem is the 2 small nuts on the sump which can only be undone with the gearbox out as there inside the bellhousing.

Best to budget on engine out which varies between $800-$1.5K to remove and replace using new gaskets, oil, filter, diff oil, coolant etc.

Cheers

Who is australia can supply one of these longer pump drive collars? My GTR aint got oil pressure, being an 89 model its probably sheared the crank drive. Happened at start up so hopelfully wont be a big job.

Any competant machine shop can make up the collar for you.

Basically they make a flat edge on the crank, then weld on a small piece about 3mm at the same height as the standard collar. The new piece and the standard collar will basically double the area that the crank is driving. Then balance it all up, easy as.

Have a look at any oil pump out of an early GTR and you will see how badly it wears the section it engages

etc....as in what?, is that just the front diff or both?

what about timing belt, water pump?, Ive been told these are good to replace after getting a GTR....

is the "engine out" work almost a necesity after buying one?, how long does it all usually take?

cheers

Tom

Obviously mine's been given a new crank/engine sometime. I've got the later style crank. The problem is too much silicon on the sump which has made its way into the oil pump pressure relief valve and stuck it partly open. The crank journals are fine. Its the thrust bearing surface that's stuffed. Haven't been able to find anyone willing to machine it either! May have to get another bottom end.

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
