Hey all! Got a wierd problem with my AVCR:

- ER34GTT Tiptronic

- Stock Turbo and ECU

Setting A:

0.50 Boost

35% Duty

Setting B:

0.90 Boost

65% Duty

(both are in learning mode)

I dont know if Im causing this to happen but every once in a while the AVCR will change the duty on setting A to the same as B?? I change the duty back down to the 35% again and it works like a charm for a week or 2 then goes again! I noticed though that when I turn it off the boost runs at about 0.50 - I think it should be running more? any ideas?

Also does the duty sound about right for those boost levels?

Thanks

I don't use the learning mode. Maybe that's got something to do with it.

0.5 is basically off. You might as well turn it off if that's the boost you want.

Also, you should know I blew my turbo with a spike to 0.91 so keep it to about 0.8 i reckon.

The duty for 0.9 sounds about right. You might not hit it at that duty but better to be under than over with a stock turbo.

i've got an r34 with avcr. (I do also have power fc but i didn't have to vary the avcr settings after it was installed and tuned) I'm running 0.70 bar with 49% duty. 65% seems very high.... Mine is a manual which may make some difference but i'm not sure. You probably know - but the way to tune the avcr is to set boost and vary the duty (i do it in 2 % increments) up or down until you are consistently hitting the boost you set.

Also when running 0.9 bar try not to do it for a long time because you will generate alot of heat and the turbo won't appreciate it. At all. Especailly with the standard cooler (if thats the case). EVERYONE has a different opinion about boost levels on the standard ceramic skyline turbos - The way I see it is you're better safe than sorry - besides i tried 0.9 bar and it felt hardly any better than 0.7 bar..

Now my question for you - one thing I don't understand about the avcr is the 'learning' mode? How do you activate it? If you set a duty percentage, the next day or so it will show *** and if you press 'NEXT; it will show a boost/revs graph which obviously allows you to vary the duty at any given RPM - why is it automatically switching to the ***'s???

Hey Adam!

yeah Im trying to run .5 for daily driving to put the turbo under a bit less stress - I was wondering whether it might have been because Im running the boost under stock levels?

As far as the spiking issue goes then Im lucky!! on .9 at the very peak rpm of second gear the boost on mine hits 1.1-1.2 bar!!! just for a split second though it seems

how do you run it without the learning mode?

?? well now when I run it at .9 it doesnt go over .92 at any point except for sometimes in peak at 2nd gear - I dont know whats causing that though

The learning mode will kick in after all the settings are inputted - once the duty is adjusted to what it should be for the boost AND you drive under high load (3rd or 4th gear) with 85% throttle or more and it holds the boost it will kick into learning mode- thats when you get the ***'s - the graph you see after that is the adjustments the avcr will make to the duty to keep the boost at the level you want

Hey Ben.

I will have to have a look at this learning mode a bit more. Next time I see you I will tune it for you if you like. Are you coming to the drag day in July?

Also, where is your AVC-R solenoid mounted in your engine bay? What about the MAP sensor?

Mine was installed by someone else before I knew much about them and the solenoid is too far away causing the boost spikes that I have and that you seem to have.

I am going to remount mine soon to fix it but at least with the new turbo I don't have to worry so much about spikes cos it can handle it.

hmm.....maybe i might have to then!!

I just have to see how I go - I have to go into hospital to have the rods removed from my legs at the start of June (from a previous car accident) haha so Ill have to see how my legs heal up!!

Otherwise Ill at least try to get there as a spectator ;)

as for the solenoid Ive got it nice and close to the actuator - theres about 15cm (?) of hose between them - trying to get a really good response out of it! Im not sure if the hose length matters for the other 2 attached to it?

and the pressure sensor was attached to the fuel reg hose by t-piece and ran to the firewall on the passenger side, but I moved this last night so now its attached to the fuse box, I havent has a good chance to test it though yet..

Ill see if I can post up some pics of it tonight :P

You duty cycle is auto changing because the AVC-R has learn mode turned on.

It will auto adjust the Duty to give you the smoothes possible Boost curve under full Throttle.

To turn it of: Go to your boost menu, Either A or B, Go down past Boost and the Duty Menu.

You will see a menu called Learn Mode. (Learn Gear)

They will be a list of gears: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. and will all have O, O, O, O, O

Change them to X, X, X, X, X

.

that will turn learn mode off.

See how you go.

I see now why I don't have that problem because I have the injector duty wire hooked up instead of rpm. It's one or the other and since I was concerned about runnning out of injector head room I chose that one. The unit needs rpm input to do the gear based learning, I think that's how it works.

Yes thats correct, So in the case of not having the RPM signal setup, You turn of Learn Gear.
