right so being a student im limited to $$ , and need to get this skyline up to D1 spec.

basically ive got a budget of a grand to do this (as far as engine mods go)

ive thought up this plan; but bare in mind ive never worked on rb's before, just turboing b16a's/b18cs 4agtes etc.

VG30 turbo or rx7 in gtst exhaust housing(which i already have) or RB25turbo:

does anyone have the a/r's for the VG30's off the SOHC 3L engines?

3" exhaust bla bla

stock ecu with a safc:

now does anyone here actually have their safc tunned to run higher boost. and if so, what settings is it at, as they **** around with the timing abit.

we used to chuck 450cc's in the hondas and wind it back to around -40% but itd advance the timing mega so had to retard at dizzy = rough...

chuck a evo cooler on it or something with 2.5" pipes or 3"(to big?)

lastly, what would be a good suspension setup for CHEAP that would be sufficient for track work.. i know coilovers are best and i will probly have to save for that anyway, but is there anyother way around that option (other than choppies)

ill be doing all the work myself so no labour worries, and car parts over here (NZ) are quite abit cheaper than over there :boobies2:

any other suggestions?

cheers guys

Fuel pump would be pretty important, particularly with the bigger injectors.

With the turbos you have listed i'd say you'll be aiming for a bit under 200rwkw which the stock injectors could stretch to with a rising rate reg. You could then use the safc to tune the on boost area only and not have to worry about the bottom end.

R32's generally maintain decent A/F ratios with the stock ecu at higher boost, they are nowhere near as bad as 33's.

2.5 inch piping would be fine, the stock piping is only slightly smaller than 2.5 anyway.

I'd be leaning toward the rb25 turbo but as it has ceramic exhaust wheels it may not last too long in a drifter.

The biggest improvements i found with my 20 were a s2 rb25 turbo and getting a re-mapped ecu which was done by dr drift i think. The ecu netted the biggest overall gain tho, mid-range and throttle response were greatly increased, as were fuel economy and top end power, but wouldnt've been such a good upgrade with out the 25 turbo.

I think value for money you'd be better off buying a re-mapped ecu in trade for your stock one rather than the safc...

What about a gtr cooler?

Im sure if you did a search you could find the VG30 A/R's

A $1,000 budget, hmmmmm....this is what I would do

1. Jaycar IEBC, DFA and Hand Controller $200

2. Used Jap 3" exhaust, $300

3. R34GTT Intercooler $150

4. R33GTST turbo $350

There is your $1,000 spent, you have to tunre it of course, but 160 rwkw should be achieveable.

As for suspension, I would get a pair of Whiteline adjustable stabiliser bars, 27mm for the front and 24 mm for the rear. For drifting, set the front on soft and the rear of hard and get into it. Add a set of caster bushes and you have change from $600. Best bang for buck suspension mod ever.

Hope that was of some hlep:cheers:

get an RB25 turbo instead of the VG30, on a RB20 the VG30 will be an absolute dog off boost.

You can get the ECU remapped by Dr Drift, from memory the boost is up to 1 bar.

Use a GTR cooler rather than an EVO cooler, not sure why you would want to use an EVO one on a Skyline...

You'll be very VERY lucky to do all this with only $1K. You'll need to change your fuel pump too if you want your engine to last.

If it were me I'd focus on handles rather than power. RB20's suck for power, ain't that right Roy? ;)

cheers guys.. yeh ive actually gotta EP-ROM burner here at the moment, but doubt Dr Drift would just chuck me the map for me to burn meself.. side note; what octane gas you guys use ? no doubt tho that chipping the ecu's is the best way to go as i upgraded to that on the hondas after the safc's and the difference was amazing for a 15$ chip and only on a basemap.

what did you end up paying for the chipping and was that him socketing the ECU and burning the chip, or just giving you the chip.

ill look out for a rb25 turbo then, but might chuck the rx7 turbo on to see what sorta gains that provides over the stock one just as a reference for people.

GTR coolers are quite expensive, and can score evo 4-6 cooler for 300$.

cheers for the info aye; helps alot .

Hey Sydkid,

what would be the best setup with the whiteline sway bars on an r32 for street??? both on soft???? I just bought a pair from a group buy and am about to fit them. What do u think?

Thanks

George

    • In a few years from now, you'll regret that. It'll eat away at you, knowing the truth of the ugly hiding beneath the beautiful exterior... 😛
    • I don't think the G2 profile is particularly dangerous for the engine per se, more just are you actually ok with the turbo lag trade-offs? If the answer is yes then go for it. I personally don't think I'd be ok with it because I spend so much time at lower RPMs and I really enjoy the feeling of being able to stay in 5th gear on the highway and just roll into the throttle to get boost. Or staying in 3rd gear on "gentle canyon cruises" without feeling the turbo lag too badly. The 525 pump should be able to run flat out on factory lines but I would bet the pressure drop from pump to regulator is quite impressive. I don't know how much it would be exactly but I've seen figures like 30 psi thrown around.
    • It's interesting seeing everyone talk about what level of risk they are happy to tolerate.  Building a GTR always has a level of risk, you could be that lucky guy that drops 20k on the engine build alone and still has the thing go pop on the dyno. Life is fun like that.  The way I see it, the thing is a toy to be enjoyed. I'd be happy to turn up the power on stock motor and limit the risk with sensible tuning and engine protection. If it still goes pop, it is what it is. The car isn't a daily driver so it can happily sit while a plan is made to sort it out.  Given this thing will be a street car only, I really feel it's worth the (relatively small if managed well) risk to turn the power up to around 350KW on e85.  I don't think anyone getting into the skyline game now is doing it out of logic. Surely it is a purely emotional decision so I'm not sure how important it is to think about the engine build logically. The heart wants what it wants.  @joshuaho96 little note for Josh, I run my 525 pump flat out all the time and through the factory lines without any issues. (excluding the melting connectors, that's sorted now. we'll pretend it never happened lol)
    • But the Nexus S3 is very expensive and won't be as purpose-built for the application as a separate electronic boost controller :^) More seriously my pet issue here would be that the Walbro 525 running at 100% duty cycle is going to require more FPR than the stock setup can handle. I'm also pretty sure from what I've seen elsewhere you might want to slow down the pump regardless unless you're going to come up with some way of upsizing the fuel lines coming from the fuel tank. Factory 8mm fuel line doesn't actually flow very much if you want to keep pressure drop down between the fuel pump outlet and FPR. If you really want to "keep it simple" I would run only as much pump as you need and source a fuel pump controller to slow down the pump in the vain hope of being able to run stock-style FPRs which are pretty dinky. Or just use the HICAS lines and it should be mostly fine. OP should also really think hard about what profile they'd want out of the turbo. My pet choice here would be the G1 profile rather than anything higher power but YMMV. I already think ~stock turbo lag is pretty bad so I don't want to make it worse. In "gentle canyon cruising" I found that I spent a lot of time around 4-4.5k RPM. I also recommend DIYing labor if you're detail-oriented enough. Costs are high for labor + if you do it yourself you can be your own quality control.
    • GTSBoy is again on the money. My actual advice? Sell the car. (really). For what it's worth as is, you can sidegrade into something much better. If you care about function then this is the actual move. If you want a Skyline to perform, set aside about $100K to do it. This is NOT a typo. You will see right away these are two very different mindsets. Realistically we're talking full restomod for any Skyline still kicking around. Have an honest think about which one you are.. and what you want to do, and how much you want to invest in this (with no return).
