Just received the following via email and it has got me thinking about it pretty hard - do I have to pull over immediately for an unmarked car or not?

Does anyone know anything about this - is it legit???

If it is legit its mighty helpfull and should be passed onto all female drivers.

Any help/info would be great.

UNMARKED POLICE CAR WARNING.

This number actually exists here in Australia read this and then send it to all your friends! I never even knew about being able to dial the number 112 feature!

This actually happened to someone's daughter. Lauren was 19yrs old and in university. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the Saturday before New Year's and it was about 1pm in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and university age) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a petrol station, etc. So Lauren had actually listen to her parents' advice, and promptly phoned the number, 112 on her mobile phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away.

She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there was a police car where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.........the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car.

Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them i.e.,put on your hazard lights) or call No. 112 like Lauren did. Too bad the mobile phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information.

112 IS THE NUMBER TO RING IF YOU CANNOT GET SERVICE ON YOUR MOBILE IT'S LIKE 000

So now it's your turn to let your friends know about No. 112.

This is good information that I did not know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please pass on to any females that you know.

lol thats a fair call WLDCRD they prob woudl fine you althought in saying that if it was a dark quiet area i dont know if i would just pull straight over unless they had some serious flashing lights... i woudl be looking for a streetlight before i stopped at the least...

I don't know about not pulling over but the 112 thing is true. It should be written in the instruction book for every mobile phone (might be just GSM). Its an international thing cause different countries have different emergency numbers, so anywhere you go 112 should work. Its about the only number you can call without a SIM card. You can also usually call it from a keypad locked phone so be careful not to accidently call it.

112 definatly is the emergency number for mobile phones - works on any network (optus/telstra/vodafone) regardless of who you are with, emergency calls only. I thought this was common knowledge? It usually even dials if your phone is on keypad lock as well... and some phones actually say 'dialing emergency' etc...

It sounds reasonable - to not want to pull over in the middle of nowhere, but what if you are in the middle of nowhere - 10ks to the next town, wonder what the cop would think of following you for that long....

hahah good point WLDCRD - get fined for being on your phone and driving at the same time

it is true... in most western countrys this is a fact that u dont have to pull over str8 away if its an unmarked car.

pull into a servo or somewhere public its up to u to pull over where u feel safe.

I remeber hearing about the 112 thing on the radio, and it said that unlike 000 it dosn't have the tracing capabilites so you should dial 000 first.

If a person can steal an unmarked cop car, they could almost just as easily steal a marked cop car? Or maybe it's really easy to rig up blue and red sirens to your car... meh I dunno.

Dont think they would be stealing a cop car so to speak but hooking up flashing lights and a set of strobes to ya car is rather simple actuarly it's really really easy so yea that is good info and wont be stoping in no quiet areas for an unmarked...

seems like noone should for that fact...

Oh - and to reply on topic (for a change)... I smell shenanagins with that story.

It always happens to a friend of a friend of some guy I know's buddy.

That said - if you have a police car flash you to pull over (fake or otherwise), you are well within legal recourse to select a more appropriate place to pull over. This doesn't mean driving halfway across town - but to the next sensible, well lit (if night time) area.

Last time I was flashed on the Monash just near Toorak Rd exit - I didn't stop in the emergency lane, but chose to exit the FWY and stop on Auburn Rd. He never even mentioned it. Giving them some kind of 'yes, I see you' guesture probably wouldn't hurt either.

No police officer will question your reasons for wanting to stop in a safer place... it is they who have to stand on the outside of the car afterall.

I have a friend who is a bit eccentric and is an electronics obsessed Dick Smith employee... he has a loudspeaker and siren set up in his engine bay, he has a mic in the car that is connected to the loudspeaker... funny shit, especially when your driving along and hear a siren behind you followed by a loud voice telling you to pull over... only to look in the mirror and all you can see is a shitty beat up old mazda 626...

    • So, when are you trying the new GR86 or BRZ?
    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c
    • Hey Mark...sorry to interrupt your career change to hair dressing... but...did you ever fit the interchiller to the commodore, and if so how was it? And, who made it?
    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
