Sandown Sprint 5th June - what do i need to do to race?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I am a bit new to the whole track day thing - my car has just recently been put back on the road and i am keen to drive on some of the local racetracks here in VIC - sandown, calder, PI etc.

Anyway i have my CAMS level 2S license and i am a member of the NDSOC Nissan club which is CAMS affiliated.

I notice on their coming events that there is a Sandown sprint day on the 5th June.

Its hosted by the MCSA.

First off - what do i need to do to sign up for the day? I checked the MCSA website but its 2 years out of date, is there a form i need to fill out and send off or do i just rock up on the day? Is there a cost involved in participating?

Secondly - is anyone else from here planning on going?

Finally what do you think i need to make my car track ready?

Its a S13 SR20DET - I have a larger radiator and decent tyres for the day. I guess i need some better brake pads, fire extinguisher, second bonnet catch/restraint, helmet.

Anything else?

Leave it a week and come to the WRX day at Sandown. Based on the little i know about MSCA you will get more track time at the WRX day. See the events thread.

Other then that ask Gerard from NDSOC or blind_elk off the forum fo rth esupp regs and entry. It will explain everything.

I know thereis about 10+ SAU folk doing the WRX day the follwoing week

Don't know which MSCA site you're looking at - try www.cm510.com, and follow the link to the MSCA area. There you will be able to download the current entry form.

You will need to get your entry in by the end of next week (May 27) at the very latest. From memory, the entry fee is around $100, but it will be listed on the entry form. Ring the event secretary (listed on the entry form) and let him know you are entering.

For yourself, you will need a helmet and some common sense (don't go haring into turn 1 and roll it - like an idiot Fiat driver did a couple of years ago on a familiarisation lap!); for your car you will need a fire extinguisher, auxilliary bonnet restraint, valve caps. Some decent brake pads won't go astray.

Any further questions, email Justin (NDSOC competition secretary) at [email protected]

It's likely I will be there, spectating only (see my "bloody 'precious' RB engines" thread in Maintenance). Ask around, most of them know me (as Greg, not as blind_elk).

Word of advice - if it's your first time out on a racetrack, or Sandown, TAKE IT EASY - there are no sheep stations at stake here. You are out there to have fun and to LEARN.

I am not sure if you are a member of a car club yet - but to participate in the MSCA day you will need to be a member of one of the 7 (?) affiliated car clubs.

As Roy mentioned there are a number of us from here participating at Sandown the following weekend with the WRX Club. Members from any car club are able to attend this event. So since most of us are members of Skylines Australia Victoria we can participate in these events no worries (can't with the MSCA).

Here is our link to the Sandown Event on June 12.

For car prep - Sandown is a place where brakes are used pretty heavy. Big stops into turn 1 and at Dandy corner especially. Otherwise the only other regular suggestion is to look into oil cooling.

Thanks guys,

Yes its my first time out - i have spent a while getting the car ready, the WRX club meeting the week after sounds good especially if i can meet some fellow nissan racers.

I am not out to set any records and will be taking it easy - i dont want to damage my car so soon after having it ready!

I have emailed Justin @ NDSOC but havent heard back yet, just thought i would ask here for some people who have gone through the process before.

The car has a greddy sump pan on it with internal baffles, i have an oil cooler to put on as well but not sure if i will get that done in time.

This was the website i was looking at: http://www.marquesports.com/ however i will be bookmarking Cams' website now!

If you don't get the cooler on in time I hope you at least have a oil temp gauge.

If so - be wary once you get to 120deg (which you will!) and slow right down and come off if you get to 130deg!

Otherwise - just have some fun and most importantly don't over do it. You will enjoy it heaps more if the body and the engine come home in 1 piece! LOL

Good thing you have an aftermarket sump, but on SR20s they aint needed if you want to enjoy some track work.

Also my experience is whilst an oil cooler would be nice, single turbo RBs and SRs do not cook the oil and water near as much as std GTRs do. So sure your oil temp will climb, but not at the rate the GTR boys experience.

The fact that you are only doing 2-3 hot laps, with a warm up and cool down lap, then as long as you have a good fresh sump of oil then id say you wont have a drama. I know of plenty of S13/14s that have done years of track work, goes for me with my RB20 without an oil cooler with no dramas. LOL i sue to drive until the engine light came on, and it normally took 12-15 mintues for that to happen at open days so at a super sprint, again i think you will be fine as you only get 5 laps in total so abour8-10mins inc warm up/.cool down laps.

Enjoy, hope to see you at the WRX day:)

That's a different mob altogether! They do the State Race series - actual racing (we do "sprinting", which is just against yourself and the clock). You need a C3 licence (minimum) for that.

    • Thanks for that.... If only I could do something once and be happy with that, like some people do....
    • I had no transmission at all so I managed to find a big box manual gearbox from an R34 GTT for an insanely good price in EU. I converted it to push type which cost more than the transmission almost, with parts from Amayama! These engines are very strong and can put out decent power with a properly sized turbo. You can save on money from parts like pistons and rods, and invest those in the transmission and other parts. I suggest you join the RB20 Enthusiasts facebook group, plenty of info and almost daily posts there about 20DE/DET/Neo+T builds. (I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by mentioning third party platforms, just trying to help the buddy out)
    • Yeah, having tried all of those methods including BBQ+recipro/hacksaw, I ended up buying a bush press kit under $150 that works well, like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/355967727167?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=sfmmuhxgqhm&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=dJvnaZ11TB-&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY It basically has a range of pushers and cups with threaded rods between to press out a range of large bushes. The problem with any sawing solution is minimising damage to the subframe side, although it probably needs a quick sand afterwards no matter what solution you try due to damage
    • Hi. Thanks for the answer. I do not have instagram 😄 I too considering turbo the RB20DE NEO 🙂 But i think i upgrade the gearbox first or at least buy new.
