I had the classic old age R32 gtr experience the other day coming down the freeway. One of the turbo's decided to die leaving me with the unenviable task of deciding how to go about a fix.

I've got most of the bits and peices off now and by the looks the good old rear turbo has done a seal and the front one is not real flash either. Both have a nice little puddle of oil in the compressor housing although the rear one is more like a 'pool'.

I was kindly offered a second hand unit assuming one turbo to be shagged but, since I can see a fast repeat of my present situation and all the mucking around repaeted I am considering a rebuild on both. Just wondering if anyone has a place they have used and prices for going down this path. Alternatively if someone knows of a person getting rid of some standard R34 gtr units?

I'm not necessarily wanting an upgrade in power since the motor is a bit old and the budget for the support accessories is just not there.

What's your budget? The R34 GT-R standard turbos are ball-bearing, but still have the ceramic exhaust wheel. You'll need to go to some form of N1 turbo for the steel wheel.

Here's a document outling most of the Nissan and Nismo GT-R turbos that were released and their specs:

Well, definitely give Grant a call. He rebuilt a set of N1's I had on mine that I sold ages ago. He can pretty much just rebuild but with a steel wheel instead as mentioned. While everythings off, it's a good change to replace dump pipes & front pipes too (if they haven't been already).

I use ATS in O'Connor.

He rebuilt, Hiflowed, and put bigger (t4) comp and exhaust wheels on my old VLT T3, lasted years (Still Going) & performed very well (340rwHP on 14psi) was about $1100 to perform.

Cant imagine it being any more $$$ to do similar to a GTR Turbo.

I rang him last week but he is on Holidays I beleive...?

A bit off topic..

But i was just wondering if you kind folk could give me some rough ballpark figures on pricing for fitting Turbos.

1. How much would it cost to re-fit a set of turbos (no more different than the stocks, ie just replacements)

2. How much to rebuild a standard GTR turbo?

3. How much would it cost to fit a full exhaust - turbo back?

4. How much roughly for 1 + 3 toegther from the same workshop?

5. How long will it take for #4 to take place?

- If any one could just give rough figures, from what you know / heard/ had done urself, etc. It would be greatly appreciated. All to a GTR btw, if i didnt make it that obvious :D

Thanks.

  • 3 weeks later...

just finished installing the new turbs.

I found that...

*the factory manifolds need porting and port matching.

*the factory dump pipes are crap, if your stuck with them they get some die grinding action too.

*brute force on the seized flare bolt water lines breaks them, I even tried a blow torch to no avail.

Now I've got some 700cc injectors on the way it's fast approaching tune time. I rang the boys at hyperdrive and they are snowed right under. I am happy for them but, i need a tune and since my first prefference for tuners is booked up does any one have a suggestion for another place that does datalogit power fc dyno tunes?
