fitting new deck in r33

Recommended Posts

Guest GR33DyMANGO

hi guys. ive got a 96 r33 series 2. how on earth do i get the old stereo decks out of the dash? seems like a big job!

there are 2 kenwood decks in the car at the moment. ie the normal cd player and a spectrum analyser/equalizer/look good screen:) or what ever its called.

i want to put in my pioneer oel deck and possibly attempt to hook it upto the spectrum analyser/equilizer deck??? hmmm.. can this be done?? they are 2 different brands.

also i need to take out the speakers in the doors to insert new splits. also, where do u guys put the crossovers. i really want to just hide them somewhere.. maybe just behind the deck??

thanks:)

to take the stereo out,

1) unscrew your gear knob then

2) take off the surrounding plastic panel around the gear shifter (they clipped in).

3)then take off the plastic surrounding that goes under the speedo all the way till around the stereo.

4)unscrew the stereo put the new one in. and party away.

not sure though about the equiliser connection see if there is a cable coming out of it that can be put in the stereo

As Skyline33 said, start with the gear knob, pull out your ash tray and start unscrewing any screw you see. Everything else is held by clips.

Really easy to do - one of the easiest I've ever done.

As for equaliser, depends on how it connects to the deck - if it is by RCA or speaker inputs, then can be done. If is a special plug (ie Kenwood exclusive) then you won't be able to - I'd say this is more likely to be the case.

Splits - a couple of suggestions, under the carpet near where the kick panels are - I have a phone kit in my car and I put the control unit under the carpet about where the right passenger foot would rest. This unit is about the size of one crossover, but I'm sure you could fit another in there.

You might also be able to mount them under the dash (maybe tape to the steering column).

You will probably just have to have a play around to see where you can sit them whilst avoiding making any holes.

Hope this helps. Maybe try contacting a car audio specialist for some ideas.

Does the standard stereo come with splits? I notice a mesh thingo on the window pillar..i assume its the tweeter for the split??

I'm stuck on the standard tape player at the mo, getting impatient for good sound once again after only a few days of the radio :)

What about wiring? is it a standard DIN connection for the stereo or do you have to use a wiring harness or the like? Would be nice if its just plug and play.

Splits weren't standard on my car when I got it. I just had crappy stock 6's in the doors.

You may be able to make wiring it easier by getting a harness and soldering these wires to the harness supplied with your deck- I think Aerpro make one for the R33. But I'm pretty sure all you have to do is put connectors on each of the wires out of the deck to match up with the loom (I had an aftermarket deck so I can't be sure about stock). The harness might juts make things a bit neater.

Wiring for decks is really not that hard to do once you have a basic idea of how to crimp, cut wires and joining corrct wires together. The hardest bit is mounting the things and in most Nissans and Toyota's it is very easy!! :uh-huh:

Yeah, its not too hard to get the hang of. This will be my third install in a car, although the other 2 were transfers.. Even if you have to do it only once every 2 years its a pain in the butt. Just wondering as I have yet to dismantle the dash (thanx for the advice on how to do that as well guys).

I was able to get my HU out without any trouble at all.

I tried the other day to get it back in but with the metal mount things I can't see how its possible to get it back in through the dash.

I'm going to the track day tommorow so if no one can help me before then i'll take my screw driver along and ask someone to help me. (its a double din japanese pioneer).

Thanks for any help.

hey guys thanks heaps for all your help :)

red sky: the antenna problem was my friend jimi:) hey hows your car going? i got mine registered today:)

another query.. how on earth do i get the side speakers out? and how do i take the rear seat out so can make a new parcel shelf?

ta

justin:)

To get your rear seat out Mr Mango there are two screws near the bottom of the seat. You then can yank the seat up quite hard near where you took the screws out. To get the upper part of the seat out I think you lift it up because its held on by three hooks - you also have to get it around the seat belts.

Good news Gr33dy that you got it registered - you gotta be happy

Its doing well - gotta get the suspension sorted out and a new stereo installed then I'll be happier. Then the sideskirts fitted and bumpers repainted then done for now. Most of the basic mods are already done like exhaust, pod, etc

How's yours doing?

Cheers Al

Did my install in about an hour. As you guys pointed out, very easy job! Just remove the facia surround and a few screws and it pops out. You need to lever the bit over the steering wheel fairly carefully as it needs to bend a bit to get the right airduct out of the dash.

Most difficult part is just ensuring that nothing gets scratched moving everything around. Through trial and error worked out most of the stereo wiring for the R33 as well to connect up my new unit.. i'll post it soon.

btw: yes, my stereo does have splits as standard I worked out.. obviously some do. Standard speakers aren't much chop though... new unit didn't make massive difference to sound quality.

im finally gonna get round to installing my stereo tomorrow. the deck my car came with wont play burnt cds so ive been listening to cds that are about 10 years old as my entire cd collection is burnt:)

red sky: yer the cars going sweet except for this really wierd sound emitting from the dash????? it sounds like a small bit of tin flustering in the wind.... really wierd...... so i'll have to work that out.

hey predator, if you could post that wiring info in the next few days that would be a great help... doing an install real soon and don't want to blow too many fuses with the trial and error technique (and yes i'm too cheap to buy one of those little "glows if there's power" gizmos)

Hey Beeble,

I'm off for the weekend... but just quickly...

Green + black/yellow - L Rear

Orange + Puple/black - R Rear

Brown + black/white - L Front

Blue + black/red - R Front

Blue/Yellow (stripey) - Accessories (+12v)

Red/White - +12v from battery

The above have fuse like things on them so they are fairly obvious.

The other one is the aerial up/down. May have mixed the front speakers but you can work it out thru trial and error. As long as you don't stuff the power wires, and connect the ground wire first, everything else won't blow it up so you can trial and error the rest for the speakers.

Hope that helps.

    • Ah, fair enough. For the IAT, I'm using a legit GM sensor that was used on the car prior to my current build. I'll get another wideband and IAT ordered and follow up when they show up. Thanks for the help.
    • You shouldn't need to massively fatten up the mixtures for cold conditions. For one thing - 0°C is not that cold. For another, the Haltech will be using the IAT sensor to tell it how dense the air air, and calculate the correct amount of fuelling. Then the cold start enrichment is added as a % on top of that, so it should scale with the main fuelling. You might also doubt the IAT sensor at this time. You're not using one from an RB26 are you? Using a nice Bosch sensor or similar? Happens. Some wideband units take great pleasure in killing their sensors. Put another wideband in the tailpipe and compare. Or just swap the sensor to a brand new one and see.
    • Oh, my misunderstand. When the car was running, it sounded ok, but if I gave it any gas it wanted to die but caught itself afterwards. It's very different from how it was a couple months ago when it was warmer outside. The logs show that the AFRs are better during, what I assume, is warmup enrichment. Because it's cold, and air is more dense, should I work on the enrichment bit?
    • yess of course im not using 2nd hand parts from my spare engine, but the place where i live is hard to find parts for the RB20DET ,but for the RB20E is everywhere including new ones and a lot cheaper ,because for the RB20DET you have to order it overseas to get one and it cost a lot of money 3x the price to be exact. so i ask this topic because if i can use the new ones but for RB20E is it compatible or not. if not im screwed haha, not totally screwed but i have to save a lot of money first before i can begin repairing my engine, thanks for the information before.
    • Unless my sensor just died, was only a couple months old, I strongly believe it didn't. How can I test it? I never mentioned it being 20:1+?
