I still don't understand

I can't stop thinking that despite backpressure, the wastegate will not open until there is 10 psi in the system. If it doesn't open, pressure will continue to rise until it reaches 10psi, then the gate opens.

wouldn't backpressure just make it take longer for the turbo to build 10 psi in the system ?

You are right if it is a 10psi actuator that is all you will get. If you free it up it doesn't matter.

Where things differ slightly is with the R33, they have a solenoid that bypasses a certain amount of air. Fitting a bigger intercooler or exhaust can effect the boost you see because there is something else aswell as the actuator controlling boost that depends on the airflow. Standard actuator on the R33 is 4-5psi, once the solenoid opens it bypasses enough air to hold 7-8psi. If you free things up a little you will need to bypass a little more air to hold the same boost. This is why if people fit exhaust or intercooler to an R33 they gain 0.5 to 1psi.

With the R32 I believe it only has an actuator to contol boost so should be same irrespective of exhaust mods etc

THis is how I see it anyway. May be a little incorrect

the actuator "sees" 10psi sooner as there is more pressure.

with less it runs more.

my 17psi gate combo only runs 15psi. Meh, its finer details.

jsut accept that boost will rise  hehehehe
