alienracer
I get problem sometimes when I have to select reverse. When I try putting the gearshift into reverse the stick sometime refuses to go in and if you try forcing it you hear a grating noise. To get around the problem have to put the car in neutral, try selecting one of the other gears and then shift into reverse. The problem is intermittent and is becoming a worry. I was wondering if the gearbox might have a problem with the reverse gear or if the clutch pressure plate might need adjusting or realigning. TracidTrax
i get almost the same thing, i reverse into carparking spots everytime and it wont go into reverse some time, what i have to do is to put it into neutral and let the clutch go then it will go into reverse fine. TracidTrax
last thing i wanna do is fork out money for a gearbox, hope the problem is just with my clutch cause im due for an immediate clutch change Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/75941-clutchgearbox-problem/#findComment-1394399 Share on other sites
someonestolecc
My gearbox always used to grind when going into reverse. When reversing just go 4th to R or 1st to R every time you go into R. I wouldn't worry about it unless (until) reverse goes. DaGr81
u know that wen ur slowing down u downshift but if ur going too fast u cant get into 1st , same thing with reverse i think maybe try stopping and then selecting reverse, if it still happens u got urself a problem, but if its all ok, will save u some money for a while atleast until u rectify the problem eh? [D4RKS1D3]
i had the same problem. box was too "crunchy" and it wouldnt accept the gears sumtimes. Wack sum redline shookproof into it lads. that will help for about 30,000 + km. ive done about 30,000km on it and its been sweet. onli problem is that i can see the problem startin to come back a lil bit. But its still better then wat it was. I find that if i thrash my car then the box isnt too forgivin and will play up for a while til it starts to relax a bit. If ur g/box wont go into reverse. try pumpin the clutch a bit as well to get sum oil flowing thru it, works a charm everytime. paul Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/75941-clutchgearbox-problem/#findComment-1394743 Share on other sites
alienracer
Thanks for the info guys. I will continue doing the N to reverse shift process. In the meantime I will source a clutch assembly and look for a replacement box. Does anyone know where you can get rebuild kits for skyline gearboxes, particularly the FS5W71C gearbox? dayne
Well, i've had my gearbox out of the car, apart, and the place wanted $1300 to rebuild it (change bearings and syncros) now thats with the box out, and split open? what a joke. So i went and got new bearings for like $200 all up and did it myself. You wont be able to do this unless you know what your doing + have big arse bearing pullers. Rebuilding the box is almost a waste, unless your running big HP your better getting a 'newer' second hand box. Dale FZ1
That is the nature of most gearboxes that are built strongly enough to take some grunt from anything other than a sub 2 litre econobox. Jump into a LandCruiser and you will quickly become acquainted with the difficulties of selecting 1st gear without matching revs to the road speed. Try blipping the throttle slightly to bring the revs up as you select 1st. Done right, you will get it to slide in. Generally you should find that either lighter weight gear oil and/or whether the gear sets are at a proper operating temperature.
